Progetto GENIUS LUCI - Concorso internazionale "URBAN LIGHTSCAPE" - progetto vincitore

    No full text

A comparison of intertemporal choices for oneself versus someone else based on Tsallis’ statistics

    No full text
Impulsivity and inconsistency in intertemporal choice (discounting) have drawn attention in econophysics and neuroeconomics. Although it is well established that most people often show irrational discounting (e.g., hyperbolic discounting), little is known regarding whether the irrationality is mitigated or not, when the choice was performed by someone else instead of subject herself. This point is important for economic policy-making. In order to compare consistency and impulsivity in choices for oneself versus someone else, we experimentally estimated the consistency parameter q in Tsallis’ statistics-based discount function for oneself and someone else, by assessing the points of subjective equality (indifference points) at 7 delays (1 week to 25 years) in humans. We observed that (i) most people are more inconsistent when the outcomes of intertemporal choice are only relevant to someone else (q ¼ 8.89) than when relevant to oneself (q ¼ 2.63), and (ii) impulsivity, distinguished from inconsistency by utilizing the Tsallis statistics-based q-exponential discount function, is also larger in the choice for someone else than for oneself. Our results indicate that (i) leaving decision-making processes with some others may neither reduce impulsivity nor correct inconsistency and (ii) when q-exponential discounting is utilized, the definition range of q-parameter should be extended to qo0, and smaller (qo1) and larger (q41) values indicate more inconsistent discounting. Together, the usefulness of the q-exponential discounting for analyzing the dynamic consistency of economic policy was demonstrated in the present study

Malik, Letters of Else Lasker-Schüler to Franz Marc

Else LaskerSchüler (1869-1945), among the significant expressionist woman writers, did not only suffer from being both a woman and author, but also had to struggle under difficulties of being a hebrew. In this paper, especially the letter novel titled "Der Malik : Eine Kaisergeschichte" has been handled in the light of Homi K. Bhabha's 'Third Space Theory'. In regard to this, the "Third Space", which is defined by postcolonial theoretician Homi K. Bhabha as an extra place where minorities and outcast groups can express themselves in his work "The Location of Culture", is adapted to the literary "Orient" and defined once again in Else Lasker-Schüler's novel as it was never approached and interpreted before. In this sense, this supports the relevance to analyze her mentioned works in terms of the "Third Space Theory". Else Lasker-Schüler constructed a new world for herself through literature; her works were her life and her life was her works.

Access to thesis permanently restricted to Ball State community only.Essays from Somewhere Else includes four essays: “The Egg Factory,” “Not a Crier,” “Why I Hate Driving,” and “Permanent Someone: A Love Story.” This work of creative nonfiction includes essays linked in theme: the narrator looking back at moments in her past where someone—men, her mother, her best friend, herself—inflicted damage upon her in some way. She hopes to make meaning of those moments now that she is far removed in time and space from those situations. Each essay grapples with a different question and includes scenes that have stuck with the author throughout her experience as a writer and person—issues of family, death, friendship, abuse, and love.Thesis (M.A.)Department of EnglishThe egg factory -- Not a crier -- Why I hate driving -- Permanent someone : a love story

Bureaucracy and Hierarchy – What Else!?

    No full text
Hierarchy and bureaucracy have been more or less welcomed companions of human civilisation from the very beginning. In almost every culture and epoch, ruling elites and followers, superiors and subordinates can be identified. Hierarchy and bureaucracy are quite flexible, adaptable and they are fairly persistent – but why could, or even should we see this as a problem? This introduction will first provide a brief history of no change, followed by the second section where the advantages and disadvantages and the contested terrain of hierarchy are elaborated in some length. The discussion focuses on three areas: the functional, social and ethical qualities of hierarchy. In the final section, the chapters of this volume will be briefly introduced. The chapters are grouped into three sections: (I) Fundamentals and historical accounts of bureaucracy, (II) Organisational, cultural and socio-psychological aspects of hierarchy and (III) Alternative views on, and alternatives to hierarchy. I Thought You Were Someone Else

    No full text
I Thought You Were Someone Else deals with violence, family, love, art, and gender. The author examines these issues as well as what makes a creative work fiction or nonfiction by creating a multi-genre collection of seven short fiction stories and five short nonfiction pieces. Fictional stories feature protagonists similar to the author and protagonists who could be considered completely different from the author. Nevertheless, the protagonists in these pieces, whether they are real or fictitious, all experience grand realizations concerning their identity and surroundings. Essentially, they realize they are not who they thought they were. A young boy realizes he likes destruction; another comes to terms with love and romance. A father deals with his homophobia, while another older man examines his life of violence. Young women cope with getting older and struggling to create families. Others realize that their needs will never be met. All stories deal with growth, change, and discovery, thereby allowing the author to unearth details about identity and how it is shaped and evolves
