Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Lanayrella gen. nov. Type species Tornatella vagabunda Mabille, 1885. Included species Lanayrella ringei (Strebel, 1905), Lanayrella vagabunda (Mabille, 1885). Etymology Named after the Lanayru Sea from the game ‘The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’ (Nintendo Co., Ltd.), following the precedent set by Salvador and Cunha (2016) when naming a new acteonid genus after a fictional city. Gender: feminine. Diagnosis Protoconch fully immersed within the shell. Columellar region of aperture platform-like, with a sharp adapical fold. Description Shell acteonoid, thick, elongated; last whorl with slightly rounded profile; imperforate; D/ H ca. 0.5. Spire with slightly rounded whorls and faintly step-like profile; suture distinctly marked. Protoconch indistinct, nucleus fully immersed (Figures 1 (g) and 2(h)). Teleoconch with ca. 4.5 whorls, entirely sculptured by narrow punctuated spiral grooves; grooves are more numerous in later whorls and more closely packed together towards umbilicus (Figures 1 (c) and 2(c)). Grooves composed of small rounded-rectangular punctae, partially fused to the next one within each groove; punctae remain individually distinct or more completely fuse with their neighbours (Figures 1 (f) and 2(g)). Aperture anteriorly rounded, slightly narrowed posteriorly; parietal region with thin well-delimited callus; columellar region broad, slightly expanded, with a sharp edge, bearing a thickened adapical fold; outer lip sharp, thickened externally.Published as part of Salvador, Rodrigo B. & Cunha, Carlo, 2020, Lanayrella, a new Acteonidae genus (Gastropoda, Heterobranchia) from Tierra del Fuego, pp. 1009-1018 in Journal of Natural History 54 (15 - 16) on pages 1010-1011, DOI: 10.1080/00222933.2020.1777338, http://zenodo.org/record/502077

Pragmatic Case Studies as a Source of Unity in Applied Psychology

    No full text
To unify or not to unify applied psychology: that is the question. In this article we review pendulum swings in the historical efforts to answer this question—from a comprehensive, positivist, “top-down,” deductive yes between the 1930s and the early 60s, to a postmodern no since then. A rationale and proposal for a limited, “bottom-up,” inductive yes in applied psychology is then presented, employing a case-based paradigm that integrates both positivist and postmodern themes and components. This paradigm is labeled “pragmatic psychology” and, its specific use of case studies, the “Pragmatic Case Study Method” (“PCS Method”). We call for the creation of peer-reviewed journal-databases of pragmatic case studies as a foundational source of unifying applied knowledge in our discipline. As one example, the potential of the PCS Method for unifying different angles of theoretical regard is illustrated in an area of applied psychology, psychotherapy, via the case of Mrs. B. The article then turns to the broader historical and epistemological arguments for the unifying nature of the PCS Method in both applied and basic psychology.Peer reviewe

The research aim of this PhD dissertation is the contribution of Euclides da Cunha (1866- 1909) to journalism in the speeches conveyed in the reportages published in the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo between August and October 1897 and, later, in the narrative of the book Os sertões (Backlands: the Canudos campaign) which was originally edited in 1902. The research corpus was extracted from (i) the notes of a diary kept by Cunha while a war correspondent to the newspaper from São Paulo, which are gathered in the book Diário de uma expedição (2000), and (ii) his account of the Canudos war in the book Os sertões (2016), written after his in-loco coverage inland the state of Bahia. The analysis of the texts is based on two theoretical variables: (1) the study by Luiz Cláudio Martino (2016; 1997) about the functions of the media, focusing on the differences between current records (the newspaper) and memory (the book) ; and (2) the perspective of Jean Charron and Jean de Bonville (2016) on the nature and transformations of journalism over time, considering paradigmatic changes and text–context dialogue. The survey results showed that: (a) the periodization of the press allowed the Canudos war to be seen as one of the most relevant facts in Brazilian history, and that its specificity in book transformed Os sertões into the classic for which it came to be considered; (b) though under the so called “journalism of opinion”, there are discursive innovations in the journalistic work of Euclides da Cunha (press and book); (c) the book was closer to the “information journalism” than the actual on-the-spot correspondence of war based in testimonial character; and (d) Os sertões anticipates journalistic rules ( production, collection and formatting) that would be common later on and it may be characterized as as a book-report.L´objet de recherche de cette thèse de doctorat est la contribution d´Euclides da Cunha (1866- 1909) au journalisme, dans les discours publiés comme reportages dans le journal O Estado de S. Paulo, d´août à octobre 1897, et après dans le livre Os sertões (2016), édité à l´origine en 1902.

Author response to Cunha et al

The need to identify biomarkers to predict immunotherapy response for rare cancers has been long overdue. We aimed to study this in our paper, ‘Radiomics analysis for predicting pembrolizumab response in patients with advanced rare cancers’. In this response to the Letter to the Editor by Cunha et al, we explain and discuss the reasons behind choosing LASSO (Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator) and XGBoost (eXtreme Gradient Boosting) with LOOCV (Leave-One-Out Cross-Validation) as the feature selection and classifier method, respectively for our radiomics models. Also, we highlight what care was taken to avoid any overfitting on the models. Further, we checked for the multicollinearity of the features. Additionally, we performed 10-fold cross-validation instead of LOOCV to see the predictive performance of our radiomics models
