Contemporary Turkish Mevlevi Mysticism. Organisation, spirituality and relations with secular sphere
SOMMARIO: 1. Introduction - 2. The organisational structure of Mevlevi Islamic mysticism - 3. Mevlevi spirituality and religiosity - 4. The secular sphere and the laws of the market - 5. Conclusions.
Abstract: This article aims to provide as comprehensive a reading as possible of the organisation of socio-religious aggregation of contemporary Islamic mevlevism in Turkey. Starting from some classical notions of religion and spirituality (Simmel, Weber, Troeltsch) we examine the type of organisational structure of the Mevlevi order, the modus operandi, the internal relations between the followers, the role of the master taking into consideration the criterion of compromise, inclusiveness/exclusiveness and the transmission of charisma. Furthermore, the nature of Mevlevi spirituality, its organisational and moral principles, and the ecstatic practice of the sema is analysed. Finally, we analyse the relations of the Mevlevi orders with the population, some kinds of financing mechanisms, some forms of mediatisation and the marketing of some Mevlevi products. Finally, the order\u27s interest and need to become part of religious tourism is analysed, encountering, however, conflicts, internal divisions and the non-legitimation needs of specific groups of believers
Gender perspectives in the Italian Muslim family. Education, taboos, conflicts, and intergenerational transformations.
This article presents research on the dialogue between second-generation Muslim parents and children in the Italian context regarding gender identity, sexual identity, and gender education. Through the testimonies of young people (18-30 years of age), the nature of intergenerational dialogue and parental position toward the relational transformations that their children are experiencing is analysed within the Italian cultural context. For this purpose, 28 semi-structured interviews were conducted in 2021 with boys and girls aged 18–30 years and belonging to Italian Islamic associations.
Moreover, 24 young people were divided into 4 focus groups to conduct an in-depth exploration of gender perspectives on these topics; these young people are active members of the Giovani Musulmani d’Italia (Association of Young Italian Muslims). A strongly taboo dialogue emerges from the data; however, this does not hinder young people’s search for greater openness to different forms of relationality and sexuality, both in their current lives and their future families
Giovani musulmani italiani: appartenenza religiosa, socializzazione e agenzie socializzative
In recent decades, the Islamic community has seen the emergence of new generations of Muslims who find themselves having to negotiate between their Islamic affiliation, their family ethnic culture and their Italian culture in order to be and feel fully included. This causes them doubts and second thoughts about their belonging to Islam, and they experience challenges and conflicts in their relationships with their families, peers and acquaintances. On these considerations, we present qualitative research, conducted in 2020, which analyses the relational and social dynamics through which young people con-struct their belonging to Islam. The analysis is based on ten interviews with young Muslims with roles of responsibility in some local and national Islamic associations, which can offer an overall and differentiated view of the phenomenon. The results analyse the young people's socialisation pathway in three agencies considered central in their lives: family, youth association, and social media. On the one hand, the family constitutes a significant space for building belonging to the religion, since it is the first agent that forms according to Islamic values; on the other hand, associations and social media represent spaces of autonomous choice in which the young person builds his relationship with Islam
______________________________________________________The focus of this essay is on the emergence of the political ideology of neo-ottomanism and its use of an islamic ceremony to diffuse a turkish- islamic identity narrative. Such an analysis has resulted in defining the cultural borders of the specific identity model, based on the turkish-islamic theory spread out in 1980s, and supported by the islamist political parties. It has been analyzed how islamic politics have used the mevlid ceremony to promote a turkish-islamic identity and culture giving support to islamist political wave from the 1980s to nowadays, in the public as well as in the private sphere. Basing on scientific literature and data collection, it has been focused on the social, cultural and identity functions of the mevlid, particularly the social legitimacy and cohesion, the innovation and conservation dynamics of the rite in relation to the politics, the mediatization and the emergence of new islamic trends in the market
