Collateralized Funds of Hedge Fund Obligations (CFOs) are relatively recent structured finance products linked to the performance of underlying funds of hedge funds. The capital structure of a CFO is similar to traditional Collateralized Debt Obligations (CDOs), meaning that investors are offered different rated notes and equity interests. CFOs are structured as arbitrage market value CDOs. The fund of funds manager actively manages the fund to maximize total returns while limiting price volatility within the guidelines of the structure. The aim of this paper is to provide a useful framework to evaluate Collateralized Funds of Hedge Fund Obligations, that is pricing the equity and the debt tranches of a CFO. The basic idea is to evaluate each CFO liability as an option written on the underlying pool of hedge funds. The value of every tranche depends on the evolution of the collateral portfolio during the life of the contract. Care is taken to distinguish between the fund of hedge funds and its underlying hedge funds, each of which is itself a portfolio of various securities, debt instruments and financial contracts. The proposed model incorporates skewness, excess kurtosis and is able to capture more complex dependence structures among hedge fund log-returns than the mere correlation matrix. With this model it is possible to describe the impact of an equivalent change of probability measure not only on the marginal processes but also on the underlying dependence structure among hedge funds

Valuation of Collateralized Funds of Hedge Fund Obligations: A Basket Option Pricing Approach

    No full text
The purpose of the present contribution is to provide an extension to a model developed by Tassinari and Corradi [7] to price equity and debt tranches of collateralized funds of hedge fund obligations (CFOs). The key idea is to price each CFO liability as an option on the underlying basket of hedge funds. The proposed model is able to reproduce the empirical characteristics observed in the distribution of hedge funds’ returns: skewness, excess kurtosis and dependence in the tails. Additionally, it can be easily calibrated to the empirical correlation matrix and it requires only historical information to be estimated and implemented. The result is a scheme that can be useful in structuring a CFO. In particular, we believe that the approach described in this work can be helpful to rating agencies and to deal structures to evaluate various capital structures, test levels, liquidity profiles, coupons and equity distribution rules

Shear Behaviour of Wall Panels Reinforced Using Mechanically Attached Stainless Strips

It is well known that architectural heritage masonry buildings react poorly when struck by an earthquake. In order to comply with new seismic standards, new retrofitting methods and materials have been studied and tested in the last decade. This article describes the results of a series of shear tests carried out in the laboratory on wall panels in order to study the effectiveness of a new retrofitting method, using fully-reversible, non-invasive, stainless steel strips mechanically attached to the wall surface using high-strength steel bolts. The wall panels were assembled in the laboratory and were made of stone or brick work. Tests were conducted on both reinforced and unreinforced panels, in order to gain information under incremental loading on walls subject under lateral loading, on wall ductility and shear stiffness. Results demonstrated that it is possible to increase the mechanical behaviour of wall panels using the proposed retrofitting method

An assessment of the impact of possible CAP reform scenarios on Romanian agriculture

Using a simplified model, with key-variable the prices of two different possible scenarios of CAP reform after 2013 (moderate and radical), this paper present a comparison between the price effects of implementation of each reform scenario at 2015 horizon on Romanian agriculture. This short analysis shows that, under the presented hypotheses, the net welfare effect, due to the price changes, for the selected products, is positive in both reform scenarios, yet greater in the case of the radical reform. Integrated in the large context of Romanian development, it seems that the influence of CAP reform upon agriculture and rural areas will be most likely a gradual one: an interpenetration between the two scenarios is foreseeable, starting with the moderate reform that will dominate the period around 2013, the reform measures acquiring a more radical character afterwards.CAP reform, Romania, welfare effects, Agricultural and Food Policy,

    Rich, Sturmian, and trapezoidal words

    No full text
In this paper we explore various interconnections between rich words, Sturmian words, and trapezoidal words. Rich words, first introduced by the second and third authors together with J. Justin and S. Widmer, constitute a new class of finite and infinite words characterized by having the maximal number of palindromic factors. Every finite Sturmian word is rich, but not conversely. Trapezoidal words were first introduced by the first author in studying the behavior of the subword complexity of finite Sturmian words. Unfortunately this property does not characterize finite Sturmian words. In this note we show that the only trapezoidal palindromes are Sturmian. More generally we show that Sturmian palindromes can be characterized either in terms of their subword complexity (the trapezoidal property) or in terms of their palindromic complexity. We also obtain a similar characterization of rich palindromes in terms of a relation between palindromic complexity and subword complexity

La «libraria» dei frati Cappuccini di Sanremo e la donazione di Francesco Corradi

The essay starts from the will with which the physician Francesco Corradi, born in Sanremo and died in Genoa in 1865, disposed of his own legacy for various charitable purposes including the creation in his hometown of a public library. Until then, this institute was non-existent in the face of the presence of book collections belonging to religious orders, including Jesuits and Capuchins: the latter’s own books, acquired following the laws of suppression of the ecclesiastical bodies of 1866 and 1867, constituted the first core of the Corradi Library along with the volumes belonging to the doctor himself. The study therefore through the examination of the notes of possession tries to reconstruct the origin and organization of the friars’ collection, then through the analysis of the documentation produced in the meetings of the Municipal Council of Sanremo examines the formative process of the current Civic Library.

Linked data for Open Government: The case of Bologna

    No full text
Open Data initiatives push public administrations to publish an increasing number of raw datasets, achieving a more transparent and open governance. The availability of new data raises opportunities for the development of new services, but also open new challenging issues such as the increasing volume of datasets publication available and their integration in large-scale public data ecosystems. The last decade has witnessed the spreading and the consolidation of the Semantic Web technologies that have been proposed as an opportunity to ease data integration through new semantic representation and interrogation languages. By using these technologies, we propose an analysis of the different phases that bring from raw data to mashups over these data through a deployment of standard Linked Data inside a triplestore and by exploiting a Geografic Information System tool for creating mashups with cartographic data, focusing on the real case of Bologna Open Data. We also report experimental results that point out the performances of different triplestores with the goal of supporting informed choices in this emerging new area
