Gift Young Engineers: An Extra-Curricular Initiative for Updating Computer and Electrical Engineering Courses

    No full text
The curricula of engineering courses are well defined by the central government for all Brazilian universities. Indeed, there are some mandatory determinations that must be fulfilled prior to the accreditation of any engineering course in Brazil. Modifications must be submitted for evaluation beforehand, resulting in a process that sometimes takes years to be approved. That is a secure way to guarantee that the fundamentals of each engineering program will be part of the students’ carrier all over the country, and at the same time a problem when you need to introduce new technological subjects. That poses a problem when you have new demands for technological curricular components that could express the actual state of the art of modern subjects. Trying to solve these issues some professors from the Federal University of Amazonas developed a flexible extra-curricular program for electrical and computer engineering courses, named Gift Young Engineers. This paper describes the philosophy of these extra-curricular programs. Some examples of successful particular partnerships are also discussed. Indeed the proposed training programs for Digital TV Systems (hardware and software) will be presented and analyzed in details. The obtained results will also be discussed in order to contribute to similar experiences worldwide

Towards A Semiformal Development Methodology for Embedded Systems

    No full text
In recent days, the amount of functions has increased significantly in embedded products so that systems development methodologies play an important role to ensure the product’s quality, cost, and time. Furthermore, this complexity coupled with constantly evolving specifications, has led to propose a semiformal development methodology to support the building of embedded real-time systems. A platform-based design approach has been used to balance costs and time-to-market in relation to performance and functionality constraints. We performed three expressive case studies and we concluded that the proposed methodology significantly reduces design time and improves software modularity and reliability

Abstract : This thesis discusses, in light of the theory of Good Living, about residents, living on the Housing Complex ?Casarão do Cordeiro?, located in the suburb of Cordeiro, in the district of Recife, Pernambuco, based on their daily lives, their identity with the place and the memories from their former stilt house in Brasília Teimosa, neighborhood located in the southern area of Recife, which was, for many years, the scenario of social degradation and risk to the people who lived there.Through Oral History I seek to identify, based on the residents? testimonials who have lived this reality, the understanding of good living in a new housing. The conceptual framework draws on discussions about: good living according to the Aristotelian (2007) idea of happiness; everyday life referenced by the ideas of Michel de Certeau (1984; 2009); place, in light of the ideas of Christian Norberg-Schulz (2008), Yi-Fu Tuan (1980; 1983) , Milton Santos (1994; 2004; 2012) ; identity, following, mainly, the teachings of Stuart Hall (1999) ; and discussions on memory in light of Bergson (1999) and Le Goff (1992). This thesis reflects upon the thought that happiness and good life complement each other when achieved by social relations that are daily constructed

A Platform-Based Software Design Methodology for Embedded Control Systems: An Agile Toolkit

    No full text
A discrete control system, with stringent hardware constraints, is effectively an embedded real-time system and hence requires a rigorous methodology to develop the software involved. The development methodology proposed in this paper adapts agile principles and patterns to support the building of embedded control systems, focusing on the issues relating to a system's constraints and safety. Strong unit testing, to ensure correctness, including the satisfaction of timing constraints, is the foundation of the proposed methodology. A platform-based design approach is used to balance costs and time-to-market in relation to performance and functionality constraints. It is concluded that the proposed methodology significantly reduces design time and costs, as well as leading to better software modularity and reliability
