Super Partes? Assessing the Effect of Judicial Independence on Entry

    No full text
Incumbents can enjoy a cost advantage vis-à-vis new entrants and so deter new firm entry by establishing and leveraging connections with the judicial system. Connected firms may in fact avoid fully complying with the costly norms implied by a law, a regula- tion, or a contract. At the same time, they can also credibly threaten to sue new entrants. Therefore, a change in the institutional environment that diminishes the ability of incum- bent firms to establish judicial connections—i.e., an increase in judicial independence— can promote entrepreneurship. Exploiting reforms that change the way in which U.S. state judges are selected, we confirm that this is the case, and we show that this effect is more salient in states and industries where the likelihood of entering into a business dispute is higher. The paper also sheds some light on the mechanisms behind this effect

L'ambiente: dalle teorie economiche al management

    No full text

Super Partes? Assessing the Effect of Judicial Independence on Entrepreneurship

We study whether judicial independence from business interest groups promotes entrepreneurship. We argue that more judicial independence, by ensuring that courts do not favor connected parties in business disputes, induces more entry of new firms, as they face a lower risk of expropriation by powerful incumbents. In turn, this triggers the exit of established and less efficient firms, and, as a result, enhances the overall economy. In order to identify the effect of judicial independence on the outcomes of interest, we exploit exogenous longitudinal variations in the judicial selection system in U.S. states between 1977 and 2011. Empirical results broadly support our hypotheses

Direttiva IPPC-IED e il problema delle implementazione delle BAT nell'Unione Europea

    No full text

Julius Pollux, lexicographer in Athens under the emperor Commodus, devotes a chapter of the Onomasticon to a bad emperor. Many references are in the works of greeks historians, especially of Cassius Dio, contemporary of Julius Pollux

The carbon market and its efficiency

    No full text
This paper overviews the efficiency of the European carbon market EU-ETS (European Union Emission Trading System or Scheme) connected with projects JI (Joint Implementation) and CDM (Clean Development Mechanism). As known, these three flex mechanisms enable industries to earn emission reduction credits to be traded on the market. The aim of this paper is to highlight some relevant problems such us price volatility, environmental integrity, financial tools, etc., present since the Kyoto Protocol came into force in 2005. These aspects are here fully debated. The conclusion supports the idea that the CDM and JI projects have little connection with the principle of environmental sustainabilit

Tangible interfaces in virtual environments for industrial design

    No full text
In the fields of industrial design and car manufacturing the creation of 3D curves plays a fundamental role within the design process: it allows the improvement of the visual appeal of artifacts, it enhances ergonomics and the product’s commercial competitiveness through product differentiation. When flexibility and intuition are to be privileged it is fundamental to achieve natural, intuitive, mathematically correct, creation and modification of surfaces. The scientific aim of this research is the development of an innovative metaphor to modeling of 3D curves which maintains the natural expertise of the designer. The major contribution of this paper is the capability of the system to create and modify the curve naturally, without mathematical artifices, within the limits set by the use of Bezier curves. The proposed metaphor combines the benefits of two acknowledged techniques referred to as the Digital Tape Drawing and the Eraser Pen, which allow the real-time modification of the curve. The integrated adoption of tangible interfaces and innovative mathematical tools, combined with the adoption of semi-immersive environment and lightweight interaction devices, delivers intuitive curve creation for free-form modeling within the virtual scene. The paper describes the details of the algorithm developed and it highlights its strengths during the styling phase
