Exploration of Beyond von Neumann Computing to solve the Memory-Wall issue

The aim of the project is to propose a RISC-Vlim microprocessor that supports Logic-in-Memory operations. The RISC-Vlim is based on the RISC-V ISA where the data memory is replaced with a memory capable of doing simple operations on the data stored inside it. The preliminary results demonstrate how the use of such memories can improve the algorithm execution speed, reducing the need for complex solutions and saving energy.
The project uses the available RISC-V IP and the Logic-in-memory concept in order to improve the average execution time of the RISC-V memory operations and then reduce the overall execution time in programs. The goal has been reached by introducing a new memory model, capable to perform logic operations additionally to the simple reads or writes. To exploit this new memory capability the RISC-V ISA has been enlarged
Logic-in-Memory Computation: Is It Worth it? A Binary Neural Network Case Study
Recently, the Logic-in-Memory (LiM) concept has been widely studied in the literature. This paradigm represents one of the most efficient ways to solve the limitations of a Von Neumann’s architecture: by placing simple logic circuits inside or near a memory element, it is possible to obtain a local computation without the need to fetch data from the main memory. Although this concept introduces a lot of advantages from a theoretical point of view, its implementation could introduce an increasing complexity overhead of the memory itself, leading to a more sophisticated design flow. As a case study, Binary Neural Networks (BNNs) have been chosen. BNNs binarize both weights and inputs, transforming multiply-and-accumulate into a simpler bitwise logical operation while maintaining high accuracy, making them well-suited for a LiM implementation. In this paper, we present two circuits implementing a BNN model in CMOS technology. The first one, called Out-Of-Memory (OOM) architecture, is implemented following a standard Von Neumann structure. The same architecture was redesigned to adapt the critical part of the algorithm for a modified memory, which is also capable of executing logic calculations. By comparing both OOM and LiM architectures we aim to evaluate if Logic-in-Memory paradigm is worth it. The results highlight that LiM architectures have a clear advantage over Von Neumann architectures, allowing a reduction in energy consumption while increasing the overall speed of the circuit
Coluccio Salutati e l'Ungheria
Coluccio Salutati (1332–1406) was the most sensible inheritor of Petrarch’s doctrine in Florence. An example for this is the continuity from Petrarch’s V ires illustres to Salutati’s Famosi cives, that is, to illustrate paintings depicting famous people with verses. Filippo Scolari (1369–1426), better known as Pippo Spano or Ozorai Pipó, spent a major part of his life in Hungary. The paper considers an unsigned official state letter sent to Scolari in 1405 from Florence to have been written by Salutati. It signals the first step towards the Scolarian myth as a devoted statesman, eventually immortalized by Andrea del Castagno in his frescos of Florentine figures. Many other of Salutati’s state letters offer similarly interesting material to study the onset of humanism in Europe and the relationship between Florence and the Hungarian Kingdom

The Lettere of Andrea Calmo: authorial artifices and historical reality
openNonostante l’edizione di Vittorio Rossi del 1888, la raccolta di "ingegnosi cheribizzi" e di "fantastiche fantasie" di Andrea Calmo è ancora avvolta da un certo mistero. L’autore, dissimulando la propria identità dietro alla “maschera” dell’umile pescatore veneziano, è stato in grado di offrire uno spaccato della cultura e della società nella Venezia cinquecentesca.
In particolare, è il quarto libro delle Lettere ad aver suscitato maggiore interesse tra gli studiosi ed i lettori: pubblicato nel 1566, a diversi anni di distanza dai primi tre, questo libro si distingue per il fatto che tutte le epistole sono indirizzate a delle donne immaginarie o realmente esistite.
In questa sede si propone, in primo luogo, uno studio della biografia del Calmo accompagnata da un’analisi del contesto storico-culturale della Venezia cinquecentesca; in secondo luogo, invece, viene proposto un commento di alcune lettere dell’ultimo libro dell’opera calmiana, che cerchi di far luce principalmente sull’aspetto linguistico e contenutistico del testo.Despite Vittorio Rossi's 1888 edition, Andrea Calmo's collection of "ingegnosi cheribizzi" and "fantastiche fantasie" is still shrouded in a certain mystery. The author, dissimulating his own identity behind the "mask" of the humble Venetian fisherman, was able to offer a cross-section of culture and society in sixteenth-century Venice.
In particular, it is the fourth book of the Letters that has aroused greater interest among scholars and readers: published in 1566, several years after the first three, this book stands out for the fact that all the epistles are addressed to women imaginary or actually existed.
Here we propose, first of all, a study of Calmo's biography accompanied by an analysis of the historical-cultural context of sixteenth-century Venice; secondly, however, a commentary on some letters from the last book of Calmo's work is proposed, which seeks to shed light mainly on the linguistic and content aspect of the text
Trusted Tales: Creating Authenticity in Literary Representations from Ex-Yugoslavia
This research deals with questions of authority and authenticity and how they are expressed, constructed, and appropriated within the Anglophone book market. It considers the body of literature written about ex-Yugoslavia since the 1990s Balkan conflicts by exiled writers from the region which has entered the international literary canon. Books’ routes from original publishers into English translation are discussed through practices of trust, one of the crucial social devices underpinning their exchange. Within these cross-cultural processes, the role of cultural brokers is crucial. Symbolic and cultural resources are specifically mobilised through their powerful author brands.
By exploring authenticity in the context of book publishing, I further look at how ideas and practices of community are employed and negotiated by writers and those who promote their books. My field is multi-sited and fluid, reflecting how different individual and national positions are enacted and performed through strategies ranging from unconscious dispositions to deliberate intentions. This research thus brings together ideas of the author as an authentic, representative voice together with exile as a position that grants them a new lease of relevancy in the post-socialist context.
Although ex-Yugoslav books occupy a ‘high end’ niche of the UK market, constrained by commercial as well as political, cultural, and institutional forces, in public discourse ideas of the ‘free market’ and ‘free speech’ are mobilised to produce various types of modernisation narratives. The (post)socialist production of literature is perceived as having to ‘evolve’ into a capitalist model: this would allow not only healthy competition and consumer choice but guarantee an individual writer ‘free speech’ as a basic human right. Therefore, the most general question this research raises is what kind of foreign literature gets translated into English, under what socio-cultural conditions and which politics of representation it serves within the project of world literature
Insulin receptor membrane retention by a traceable chimeric mutant
Background: The insulin receptor (IR) regulates glucose homeostasis, cell growth and differentiation. It has been hypothesized that the specific signaling characteristics of IR are in part determined by ligand-receptor complexes localization. Downstream signaling could be triggered from the plasma membrane or from endosomes. Regulation of activated receptor's internalization has been proposed as the mechanism responsible for the differential isoform and ligand-specific signaling.
Results: We generated a traceable IR chimera that allows the labeling of the receptor at the cell surface. This mutant binds insulin but fails to get activated and internalized. However, the mutant heterodimerizes with wild type IR inhibiting its auto-phosphorylation and blocking its internalization. IR membrane retention attenuates AP-1 transcriptional activation favoring Akt activation.
Conclusions: These results suggest that the mutant acts as a selective dominant negative blocking IR internalization-mediated signaling.Fil: Giudice, Jimena. MeMPA: A Memory Mapped M-SIMD Co-Processor to Cope with the Memory Wall Issue
The amazing development of transistor technology has been the main driving force behind modern electronics. Over time, this process has slowed down introducing performance bottlenecks in data-intensive applications. A main cause is the classical von Neumann architecture, which entails constant data exchanges between processing units and data memory, wasting time and power. As a possible alternative, the Beyond von Neumann approach is now rapidly spreading. Although architectures following this paradigm vary a lot in layout and functioning, they all share the same principle: bringing computing elements as near as possible to memory while inserting customized processing elements, able to elaborate more data. Thus, power and time are saved through parallel execution and usage of processing components with local memory elements, optimized for running data-intensive algorithms. Here, a new memory-mapped co-processor (MeMPA) is presented to boost systems performance. MeMPA relies on a programmable matrix of fully interconnected processing blocks, each provided with memory elements, following the Multiple-Single Instruction Multiple Data model. Specifically, MeMPA can perform up to three different instructions, each on different data blocks, concurrently. Hence, MeMPA efficiently processes data-crunching algorithms, achieving energy and time savings up to 81.2% and 68.9%, respectively, compared with a RISC-V-based system
