Scientific Output from Latin America and the Caribbean – Identification of the Main Institutions for Regional Open Access Integration Strategies
Get PDFLatin America is a region in which two thirds of the investment in research and development are funded by State resources. It can be foreseen that in the near future governments in the region will encourage and promote, or require by law or mandates, that scientific output from the region become visible and accessible in open access repositories and portals. This paper presents the results of a survey to identify the institutions of the region with the largest volume of scientific output and most exposure of their output on the Web, in order to help make those institutions visible to national, regional and international organizations involved in open access strategies and programs in Latin America and the Caribbean. The results show a leading position by universities from Brazil; a strong presence of universities from Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Chile and Venezuela, and some presence of universities from Ecuador, Peru, Costa Rica, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Urugua

No full textIn celebration of the 13th International Open Access Week, we are delighted to share with you presentation on "Building a global knowledge commons based on the network of open access repositories" by Kathleen Shearer,Executive Director of COAR (Confederation of Open Access Repositories).Kathleen Shearer has been working in the areas of open access, research data management and
digital libraries for many years. Shearer is the Executive Director of COAR (Confederation of Open
Access Repositories), an international association of repository initiatives that was launched in
October 2009 with membership of over 120 institutions worldwide from 36 countries in 5 continents.
COAR has been promoting the role of the institution as the foundation for a sustainable
infrastructure that collectively manage the valuable outputs of research.Shearer is also the co-chair
of two RDA Interest Groups, Libraries for Research Data and Long Tail of Research Data.
Shearer is also a consultant for several other organizations. She is a Research Associate with the
Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) and was instrumental in the launch of the Portage
Research Data Management Network in Canada. She is also a Strategic Consultant with the US-based
Association of Research Libraries (ARL), providing expertise to the Association about international
activities and scholarly communication. Shearer has also done extensive work for the Canadian
federal government and research funding agencies including a project to develop metrics and
indicators framework for open science

COAR was founded in 2010 and has grown ever since. This year's meeting was dedicated to "The Role of Collaboration in Building a Global Knowledge Commons". International cooperation, whether on the levels of technology, content, or workflows, was identified as vital for the future of Open Access and long-term archiving in the field of universities and academic institutions all over the world

Im Oktober 2009 gegründet, vereint er über 90 Institutionen aus Ländern in Europa, Lateinamerika, Asien und Nordamerika. Unser Ziel ist es, durch ein globales Netzwerk von Open Access Repositories die Sichtbarkeit und Nutzung wissenschaftlicher Publikationen zu erhöhen.
COAR ünterstützt die Interoperabilität von Infrastrukturen und den Aufbau eines gemeinsamen, weltweiten Datenspeichers in Open Access Repositories, um die (Nach-) Nutzung von Daten durch Services und Portal Providern zu ermöglichen und zu fördern. COAR hat momentan drei Arbeitsgruppen (Repository Content, Repository Interoperability and Repository and Repository Networks Support and Training), jede mit eigenen Aktivitäten, Verantwortlichkeiten sowie hochgesteckten Zielen.
