Ingo Maurer. Outside/In
This book provides a very good overview of Ingo Mauer's work and its importance in contemporary art and design. Published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Vitra Design Museum, it is far more than an exhibition catalog. In the introductory essay, Jocen Eisenbrand briefly describes the halogen and LED technologies that have allowed Mauer to create the minimalist and flexible light fixtures for which he is known, and goes on to describe the trajectory of Mauer's career thus far, highlighting important works and their significance. He also examines Mauer's design aesthetic, influences on his work, his firm, and his design process. Maria Claudia Clemente approaches Mauer's work from an art criticism perspective in her essay, exploring the nature of form, figure and space in his works. Deyon Sudjic's essay places Mauer in the context of the German and European design field, comparing him to other designers such as Dieter Rams. Following these three essays is a section of "tributes", ranging from a few sentences to several paragraphs and even poems, by other artists and designers. The book concludes with a biography of Mauer in the form of a timeline. Also included are an index, a list of designers currently working at Mauer's firm, and photographs of the Vitra exhibit. High-quality, full-color photographs throughout illustrate Mauer's artwork, light installations, and light fixtures and round out the parallel German/English text.
Clement of Alexandria helped construct the hermeneutical instrument of the 'chrêsis' (right use). The Fathers used it to select elements of non-Christian cultural traditions that could be accepted. The 'chrêsis' represents the last phase of a control process that concerns things, practices or ideas. Clement applies it 'ad extra' to classical culture, because then it was assumed that the Greeks had stolen some notions from the Jews. Instead, 'ad intra' the 'chrêsis' serves to identify and counter the falsification of the truth by the heretics. The correctness of every single choice linked to the 'chrêsis' is the confirmation that the knowledge ('gnosis') possessed by the selector (assayer) is true and reliable. Clement, developing some New Testament cues, uses the image of the assayer precisely to describe the 'true gnostic', who knows how to build a 'new cultural unity' based on the confrontation with the other. The final outcome of the 'chrêsis' is indeed a conscious, cautious but open and inclusive dogmatic

I Think I Am Philip K. Dick
For years, noted writer Laurence A. Rickels often found himself compared to novelist Philip K. Dickthough in fact Rickels had never read any of the science fiction writers work. When he finally read his first Philip K. Dick novel, while researching for his recent book The Devil Notebooks , it prompted a prolonged immersion in Dicks writing as well as a recognition of Rickelss own long-documented intellectual pursuits. The result of this engagement is I Think I Am: Philip K. Dick , a profound thought experiment that charts the wide relevance of the pulp sci-fi author and paranoid visionary. I Think I Am: Philip K. Dick explores the science fiction authors meditations on psychic reality and psychosis, Christian mysticism, Eastern religion, and modern spiritualism. Covering all of Dicks science fiction, Rickels corrects the lack of scholarly interest in the legendary Californian author and, ultimately, makes a compelling case for the philosophical and psychoanalytic significance of Philip K. Dicks popular and influential science fiction.Intro -- Contents -- Introjection -- Part I -- Endopsychic Allegories -- Schreber Guardian -- Belief System Surveillance -- Part II -- Deeper Problems -- Veil of Tears -- Go West -- Dick Manfred -- Timing -- Glimmung -- Part III -- Spiritualism Analogy -- Imitating the Dead -- Indexical Layer -- Ilse -- Hammers and Things -- Crucifictions -- Over There -- Martyrology -- Can't Live, Can't Live -- Lola -- Umwelt, Mitwelt, and Eigenwelt -- Outer Race -- The German Introject -- Part IV -- Materialism, Idealism, and Cybernetics -- Startling Stories -- A Couple of Years -- Android Empathy -- Homunculus and Robot -- ALL OF YOU ARE DEAD. Pharmacological treatment of ceftriaxone-related cholelithiasis in children: is it worthwhile?
Ceftriaxone treatment of bacterial infections can be associated with biliary complications, more commonly in children than adults, in a dosedependent manner. This study describes a clinical case series of children with ceftriaxone-related cholelithiasis. We performed a retrospective analysis of cases of ceftriaxone-related biliary complications admitted to the Pediatric Clinic, Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, University of Sassari, Italy, during the period 2005-2015. Four children with cholelithiasis occurring during, or soon after, the treatment with ceftriaxone are reported. Case 1 (6-month-old), case 2 (9-yearold) and case 4 (10-year-old) were symptomatic, while case 3 (3-year-old) was asymptomatic. After the ultrasonographic diagnosis of gallstones (cases 1 and 2) or biliary sludge (cases 3 and 4), ceftriaxone treatment was withdrawn, and ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) was started in cases 1 and 2. A complete recovery was observed in all but case 1, in whom cholelithiasis was still detectable at one-year follow-up by ultrasonography. This case underwent a triple antibiotic protocol for bacterial meningitis. The protocol included rifampicin, which is known to have an effect in decreasing hepatic concentration of bile salts. Therefore, in this case, both rifampicin and UDCA were of no benefit in preventing or treating ceftriaxone biliary complications. The current pharmacological approach for the treatment of ceftriaxonerelated cholelithiasis seems to be ineffective, likely due to the high calcium content of gallstones. Therefore, the best strategy of intervention for ceftriaxone biliary complications in children remains the prevention of the risk factors
