Intercultural Competence in Language Education: Challenges and Strategies for Effective Didactics
No full textIntercultural competence is a very important part of good language education, especially in today\u27s globalised world where people from different cultures live and work together. Intercultural competence gives students the skills they need to deal with people from different cultures. This study looks at the problems and solutions for improving the intercultural skills of English as Foreign Language students at Amar Telidji University of Laghouat. A structured questionnaire with 13 main questions was given to a group of 90 students to find out what they thought about cultural awareness, teaching methods, diversity in the classroom, and teacher training in intercultural education. Data analysis and interpretation shows that students are not truly aware of other cultures and that traditional teaching methods and teacher preparedness are not enough to help them become more interculturally competent. Based on these results, the study suggests that language education should include intercultural competence through new teaching methods like interactive learning activities, the use of digital tools, and thorough assessment methods. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of teacher training programs focused on intercultural education to equip instructors with the necessary knowledge and skills. This study adds to the ongoing conversation about cultural education in language classrooms and gives useful advice on how to improve Algerian EFL programs so that students are better prepared to participate meaningfully in globalised settings. By fostering intercultural competence, students can become more effective communicators in diverse and multicultural environments, thus, contributing positively to both their personal and professional growth in an interconnected world
Digital Note-Taking Apps Impact on EFL Students’ Writing Skill
No full text تبحث هذه الدراسة في آراء طلاب اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية EFL - وتأثيرها المُبلّغ عنه ذاتيًا على مهارات الكتابة الأساسية، بما في ذلك دقة القواعد، وتنظيم الأفكار، وتماسك الكتابة. شارك خمسون طالبًا من طلاب السنة الثالثة خلال السنة الدراسية 2023-2024 في قسم اللغة الإنجليزية بجامعة عمار ثليجي. بما في دلك معدل استخدام التطبيق، والتحديات التي واجهوها، والتفضيلات بين تدوين الملاحظات الرقمي والتقليدي. أظهر النتائج أن معظم الطلبة ينظرون بإيجابية إلى هذه التطبيقات كأدوات مُفيدة لتحسين عملية الكتابة لديهم، وخاصةً لتدقيق القواعد وتنظيم الأفكار، على الرغم من أن بعضهم أفاد بوجود مُشتتات وصعوبات تقنية. يُسلّط هذا البحث الضوء على الدور المُتنامي لأدوات تدوين الملاحظات الرقمية في كتابة اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية، ويدعو إلى إجراء المزيد من البحث، بما في ذلك التقييم المُباشر لأداء الكتابةThis study investigates the perceptions of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students on the use of specific digital note-taking applications such as Notion, Evernote, and Microsoft OneNote, and their self-reported impact on key writing skills, including grammar accuracy, idea organization, and writing coherence. Fifty third-year LMD students at Amar Thelidji University participated in answering a questionnaire during the academic year 2023–2024. The questionnaire consisted of 14 items measuring frequency of app use, perceived benefits, challenges faced, and preferences between digital and traditional note-taking. Results show that a majority of students positively view these apps as helpful tools to enhance their writing process, especially for grammar checking and idea organization, though some reported distractions and technical difficulties. This research highlights the growing role of digital note-taking tools in EFL writing and calls for further investigation including direct assessment of writing performance
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Teachers’ Perceptions of Computer Use to Enhance EFL Students’ Writing Skill
No full textتهدف هذه الدراسة إلى استكشاف تصورات الأساتذة حول استخدام الكمبيوتر في تدريس اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية بشكل عام، وبشكل أكثر تحديدًا استخدامه في تطوير مهارة الكتابة لدى الطلاب. من أجل تحقيق هدا الهدف، أجريت دراسة وصفية حيث تم جمع البيانات من خلال استبيان قدم للأساتذة بقسم اللغة الإنجليزية بجامعة الأغواط خلال الفصل الدراسي الأول من السنة الدراسية 2017-2018. كما تكونت عينة هذه الدراسة من عدد 12 أستاذ من بينهم 5 أساتذة مكلفون بتدريس التعبير المكتوب في حين أن الأساتذة المتبقين كان لديهم خبرة في تدريس مهارة الكتابة في السنوات القليلة الماضية. الفرضيتان اللتان تقوم عليهما هذه الدراسة هما أن: استخدام أجهزة الكمبيوتر، أو بعض برامج الكمبيوتر، قد يساعد في التغلب على صعوبات الكتابة لدى الطلاب و دلك على المستويات المختلفة، أي الجملة، الفقرة، ومستويات المقالة. أما بالنسبة للفرضية الثانية فهي تقوم على أن معظم الأساتذة لديهم مواقف إيجابية تجاه استخدام الكمبيوتر. و في الأخير، كشفت نتائج هذه الدراسة أن الكمبيوتر وبرامج الكمبيوتر يمكن أن تساعد في تعزيز مهارة الكتابة لدى طلاب اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية وأن المدرسين يرحبون بدمجها في صفوفهم.This study aims at investigating teachers’ perceptions of computer use in EFL classrooms in general, and more specifically its use in developing the students’ writing skill. A descriptive study was conducted where data was gathered through a questionnaire to teachers at the Department of English, at Laghouat University during the first semester of the academic year 2017-2018. The sample of this study consisted of a number of 12 teachers among them 5 written expression teachers while the remaining teachers have had an experience in teaching written expression in the past few years. The two hypotheses set to this study are: the use of computers, or some computer software, may help in overcoming the students’ writing difficulties at the different levels, i.e., sentence, paragraph, and the essay levels. The second hypothesis is that most teachers have positive attitudes towards using computer in the FL classroom. The findings of this study revealed that computer and computer software can help in enhancing EFL students’ writing skill and that teachers do welcome its integration into their classes
