“LA REGOLA DELLI CINQUE ORDINI DI VIGNOLA”. 3D PRINTED LEARNING MODELS

    No full text
The study of architectural orders has been one of the cornerstones in the education of architects in Academies and Universities up until the 19th century. Although it has lost its original purpose of providing practical tools, the practice of teaching continued into the 20th century and remains a subject of study in school and university courses even today. The focus, often directed at understanding components and recognizing moldings, is still carried out today through redrawing exercises. To complement traditional methods, a teaching aid is being proposed, based on the composition of 3D printed models, designed in such a way that allows students to reassemble the elements of the order according to syntactic rules, helping them understand compositional principles. "La regola delli cinque Ordini di Vignola" (The Rule of the Five Orders by Vignola), one of the most influential treatises from the late Renaissance to the 20th century, was chosen as a reference

A Constructal Law optimization of a boiler inspired by Life Cycle thinking

    No full text
The aim of the paper is to explore how design optimization contributes to a technology's ecological evolution. The article develops this concept through an application of Constructal law, used to account for the “evolution” of technologies design (configuration, shape, structure, pattern, rhythm), and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), used for quantifying the environmental impacts of the design choices. The combination of both methods assesses how technology evolution affects the environment during its life, extending the concept of evolution of design. The study is applied to a case study of a real biomass boiler. The study analyses basic case and a series of alternative scenarios optimized with Constructal Law, guaranteeing the same thermal energy production. The results are analyzed graphically and analytically with an “Overall Performance Coefficient methodology”, that investigates trade-offs to identify the best configuration. In addition, the use of LCA allows evaluating energy and environmental performances of different design alternatives, with the best option able to reduce the global energy required of 0.33% and the normalized impacts of 4%. The methodology is proposed to support decision-making during the optimization process

The aim of this contribution is to describe the development of a serious game aimed at disseminating knowledge in the field of archaeology. In recent decades, educational video games, or serious games, have become an important means of engaging students in various educational fields. In particular, some of these games have demonstrated great potential in communicating the tangible and intangible forms of cultural heritage within the teaching of historical subjects. The case under consideration proposes an initial phase of the game focused on the reconstruction of Temple G in Selinunte, starting from the current state of the ruins, which have been subject to topographic and laser surveying, and proceeding to the reconfiguration of a first portion of the colonnade. Following a test to be conducted with high school students, subsequent phases will be developed with the aim of reconstructing the temple in its final configuration

Constructal law optimization of a boiler

    No full text
The paper aims at the optimization of the design of a biomass boiler under the inspiration of the Constructal Law by Bejan. The boiler is of the smoke tubes typology, fuel being biomass pellets. The smoke tubes are 16 and are placed in a staggered configuration. A model is built in MATLAB environment, based on empirical correlations and the mean log temperature methodology. The analysis is based on the development of a wide parametric analysis that involves variations of diameters, numbers and positioning of the tubes. Results are based on the concept of the overall performance coefficient methodology and investigate both the pressure drops variation and the thermal power generated in the different configurations’ boiler. However, since the aim of the boiler is to guarantee a fixed thermal power output to the users, results are also presented by fixing the thermal power output and adding as variable the volume of tubes adopted as an indicator to quantify materials required to achieve the same output. While from the point of view of pressure losses there is a clear best solution, this is not the case if the material uses minimization and pressure drops minimization are jointly analyzed. This leads to the need to a trade-off in performance to identify a best case

Introducing exergy analysis in life cycle assessment: A case study

    No full text
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a methodology for assessing the potential environmental aspects associated with a product or service along its life cycle. However, in the case of energy technologies, it is suggested that the LCA of a product encompasses also further aspects other than environmental aspects and primary energy calculations. In particular, to optimize the reduction of raw materials during the whole life cycle, it is important to introduce the assessment of the irreversibility, applying the exergy analysis. In this paper, an integrated approach of exergy analysis and LCA is proposed, developing the Life-cycle quality index able to suggest potential exergy inefficiencies and the Life Cycle irreversibility index that helps the comparison of processes and products having the same functional unit. In addition, the paper introduces a new dimensionless index, the Technology Obsolescence index, to quantify the technological obsolescence of the energy system examined, merging the energy performance and the material, used both with the same units to achieve a design optimization. The indices proposed are applied to the whole life cycle of a biomass boiler. The results identify that hotspots can be traced in the use stage of the real biomass boiler, where the potential recoverable exergy has an incidence of 17.4% on the total exergy destroyed. Also, in the manufacturing stage, the cooking process produces the highest irreversibilities of the production stage

Giulio Tarra translator from French With the volume entitled Il Libro pel bambino, Don Giulio Tarra won two literary competitions held in 1861 by the Congresso Pedagogico Italiano: the first was dedicated to books for deaf-mute chidren, the second to books for rural schools. Among Tarra’s works published by Paolo Carrara we find “Lezioni in famiglia, versione da M. Carraud”. This article provides some information about Zulma Carraud, the author of the collection of novels entitled: Historiettes véritables pour les enfants de quatre à huit ans published by Hachette in 1864 and translated into Italian by Don Giulio. Previously the same publisher had collected Zulma’s first works in a series to be used in primary schools. Carraud, during the Second Empire period in France, and Tarra, in post-Unity Italy, both contributed to the development of the publishing industry for schools and children with their educational and entertaining books
