G.-Th.

Migration Patterns of the North American Chickadee

This thesis has been embargoed for 5 years. It will not be available until April 2025 at the earliest. Furthermore, this document is not available for on-campus access through the duration of the embargo period.MIGRATION PATTERNS OF THE NORTH AMERICAN CHICKADEE is a collection of stories loosely connected by place and shared characters. The first story, Skinny City, is set at the North Slope of Alaska in the mid-1970’s where Patrick McCarty has found work as a pipefitter on the construction of the Trans Alaska pipeline. But after a year of the physically and spiritually punishing work, Patrick cannot rationalize the purpose of the pipeline or its threat to so much that is dear to him. In the final weeks of Alaskan winter and Yvonne McCarty’s fourth pregnancy, the family departs Alaska, bound for New Mexico in an old school bus. The dangerous, transcontinental journey compels the McCarty family to decide where home is, how to get there, and at what price. The remaining stories move back and forth in time after the journey from Alaska and are told from the points of view of Maggie and Sean (two of the McCartys’ children), and Yvonne McCarty. These stories are not an attempt to re-invent the Joads (or to write the anti-Joads). But intergenerational transience resulting from ecological disaster is a backdrop and prevalent theme in the collection. Other themes, perhaps subordinate to ecological disaster and the motivations for the McCarty family’s perilous journey but nonetheless integral to the characters’ individual journeys, include gender roles and identity, cultural pressures to partner and parent in traditional ways, and animal rights. The author acknowledges gaps in this fictional history, and silence where some voices don’t yet have a say; the map of these characters’ lives is still largely uncharted. But she hopes, too, that how families stay together (or don’t) when hardship hits is at the heart of each story.2025-04-2

School professionals' perspectives on working with transgender and gender queer youth in the school setting

    No full text
This qualitative dissertation study focused on the perceptions of school professionals in workingwith transgender and gender queer students. Twelve school professionals were individually interviewed utilizing a semi-structured format regarding their experiences working with transgender and gender queer students. School professionals were interviewed to determine: what effective practices/policies schools are implementing to support and meet the needs of transgender and gender queer students, what issues arise with these practices/policies, and what is hindering school professionals from utilizing the other practices/policies that past research has shown to be effective in supporting transgender and gender queer students. Three trainers of organizations which help school professionals better understand and support the LGBTQ community, specifically transgender and gender queer individuals, were also individually interviewed utilizing a semi-structured format in order to gather important anecdotal knowledge regarding this community. The primary researcher utilized Grounded Theory to analyze the data. The primary researcher gathered detailed knowledge and identified shared concepts from the participants’ interview responses, discovered themes, and then explored relationships between concepts in order to better understand socially constructed reality (Morse & Richards, 2002). Participants’ responses to the interview questions were transcribed verbatim and then coded using Corbin & Strauss’ (2008) approach to elevate the raw data to a conceptual level. Open coding was utilized to group similar data and categorize concepts, axial coding was utilized to link and organize these categories by discovering relationships among them, and selective coding was utilized to interpret the data through the development of relational conditions, interactions, and thereby explain the storyline (Scott & Howell, 2008). Interview data provided valuable qualitative evidence of school professionals’ experiences working with transgender and gender queer students and whether their schools have practices/policies in place to support transgender and gender queer students that past research has shown to be effective, such as: utilizing an LGBTQ+ inclusive curriculum, having LGBTQ+ safe spaces within the school, offering LGBTQIA-specific professional development trainings for staff, and utilizing a individualized gender transition plan. These data serve as a preliminary evaluation of school professionals’ experiences with transgender and gender queer youth and may inform current as well as future school professionals on how schools can best implement effective practices to hopefully create a safer school environment for these students.Psy.D.Includes bibliographical reference

The television work of Alfred Hitchcock

    No full text
The thesis uses close textual analysis to study and evaluate the television work of Alfred Hitchcock. The corpus consists of the twenty shows personally directed by Hitchcock, including his appearances before and after those shows. In response to most previous writing, which tends to compare the programmes with Hitchcock’s films (often unfairly) the thesis emphasises them as products of television. Programmes are evaluated on the basis of their perceived success as television- if they harness conditions related to television production and integrate them with narrative themes or to create meaning. Hitchcock is considered to be the major creative force in each programme. Chapter One provides a variety of important contexts including a brief history of US television of the 1950s, key literature on Hitchcock and analyses of contemporaneous programmes not directed by Hitchcock. The textual analysis chapters (2-8) consider aesthetic or thematic programme aspects. Chapter Two studies the various roles played by Hitchcock’s appearances as series host. Chapter Three considers the impact of censorship on programmes frequently dealing with murder, violence and insanity. Chapter Four analyses Hitchcock’s implementation of varieties of voice-over narration, a common device in short dramatic forms. Chapter Five studies Hitchcock’s use of point-of-view shots, particularly in relation to their role in the delivery of the narrative twist. Chapter Six considers the key Hitchcock theme of detachment from the world. Chapter Seven looks at moments from the programmes which demonstrate how aesthetic is influenced by television production conditions. Hitchcock created a number of television masterpieces. His achievements in television are in many ways comparable in quality and consistency to his theatrical films. Even when considered in the context of other 1950s US anthology dramas, the Hitchcock-directed programmes are superior on many levels. Elements of his film style were highly suited to television production. Many of his greatest achievements embrace and harness television production conditions in their presentation strategies to create an integration of style and meaning
