Polymer-Surfactant Interactions
Aqueous solutions containing poly(vinyl-pyrrolidone) and sodium caprylate, or poly(vinyl-pyrrolidone) and tetraethylammonium perfluorooctanesulfonate, respectively, have been investigated by volumetric, ionic conductivity and surface tension methods. The presence of an interaction region has been determined from conductivity and surface tension. The width of such a region depends on the amount of polymer in the mixture, temperature, surfactant content and added electrolyte (NaCl). The observed behaviour was explained in terms of the combined effects played by the alkyl-chain hydophobicity, polar head group(s) and counter-ions.
An approximate solution to a mass action model for the binding of surfactants onto polymers has been introduced. It allows determining the width of the interaction region as a function of polymer mass percent in the mixture
Narratives and legacies of 1960s Vogue Italia covers on contemporary Italian young women
The article investigates the legacy, in terms of narratives and representations of femininity, of Vogue Italia covers from the 1960s and 1970s on contemporary Italian young women. To do this, we visually and textually analyse two different corpora: 143 Vogue Italia covers, retrieved from the Vogue Italia Archive and published between 1964 (Vogue's first publication in Italy) and 1974 and between 2020 and 2022; and 46 mock covers of fashion simulated magazines created by female undergraduate fashion students during the academic years 2020/2021 and 2021/2022. Through the first corpus we examine the hegemonic discourse of Vogue Italia, assuming that it expresses the typical Italian way of creating and expressing female fashion while reflecting the shifting ideologies of the Italian feminist movement over the last century; the second corpus reveals the imaginations and narratives of young girls on fashion, disclosing how women's - an
La rappresentazione mediale della violenza verbale, emotiva e psicologica nella comunicazione intima. Analisi delle matrici culturali e delle interazioni in alcuni film
Adopting a socio-anthropological approach, this article aims to examine how eleven films represent verbal, emotional and psychological violence within heterosexual couples, specifically: the cultural roots of it, and the communicative actions expressing it. Data analysis focuses on three forms of abuse: work devaluation; gaslight; control of body, actions, and agency. The anthropological approach deals with the cultural roots of verbal, emotional and psychological abuse. Moving from Gender Studies and a feminist approach, it considers gender- based violence as connected to a power asymmetry between men and women, expressed through this kind of violence. The sociological analysis focuses on the interactions and communicative actions representing it, by combining a systemic and constructivist theory of communication with Dialogue Studies, to show the connection between emotional abuse and monologues. The examined films represent a patriarchal background, which seems to authorise verbal, emotional and psychological violence, displayed mainly through monologic actions and affective manipulation
Website for Cesare Zavattini’s Works: Digitizing and Dynamizing a Personal Audiovisual Archive:
Digitization has been changing the methods of production, distribution and use of written and audiovisual products, according to a process of “platformization” (Van Dijck, Poell, de Waal 2018). Following the “network society” model (Castells 1996), platforms, as creative ecosystems (Montanari 2018) and medial ecosystems (Pescatore, Innocenti 2011), have introduced a new mindset that connects producers and consumers within a digital environment, breaking down space-time barriers, controlling data and simplifying the supply chain (Nasta and Pirolo, 2017). So even the audiovisual field has undergone a transition to companies with a service provider role, following a user-based model that feeds different forms of participation and spreadability through intermediality and storytelling (Abercrombie and Longhurst, 1998; Jenkins, Ford, Green 2013).The project of digitization of written material of the Zavattini Archive (Biblioteca Panizzi, Reggio Emilia) starts from a productive theoretical (and methodological) intersection between platform design and game design. As we will see, the paradigm shift that platform design has brought resembles certain characteristics of the “play” experience. The concepts of collaboration and intermediation lead to a rethinking of users as pivotal and at the centre, not only regarding their user experience (as in certain types of digital games) but also in the production of various types of content (as in platforms), leading to asynchronous collective experiences, whether they are related to gaming or to participating in platforms.

Solution properties of alkyl glucosides, alkyl thioglucosides and alkyl maltosides
Aqueous solutions containing sugar-based surfactants, alkyl glucosides, thioglucosides and maltosides, have been investigated in a wide concentration range, at different temperatures. Colligative properties (freezing point and vapour pressure depression), volumetric, adiabatic compressibility, surface tension and calorimetric methods were used. The results give information on the Gibbs energy of transfer from water to a micellar environment and on other thermodynamic contributions to the overall aggregate stability. The thermodynamic quantities derived from the above experimental methods were interpreted by taking into account the role of polar head groups in modulating micelle formation. Use of a mass action approach allows determining micelle aggregation numbers, 〈N〉, from partial molal quantities. The differences between values obtained from calorimetric, colligative, compressibility, surface and volumetric properties were rationalised on proper grounds. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. The 26 year-long X-ray light curve and the X-ray spectrum of the BL Lacertae object 1E 1207.9+3945 in its brightest state
Aims:We studied the temporal and spectral evolution of the synchrotron emission from the high energy peaked BL Lac object 1E 1207.9+3945.
Methods: Two recent observations have been performed by the XMM-Newton and Swift satellites; we carried out X-ray spectral analysis for both of them, and photometry in optical-ultraviolet filters for the Swift one. Combining the results thus obtained with archival data we built the long-term X-ray light curve, spanning a time interval of 26 years, and the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of this source.
Results: The light curve shows a large flux increasing, by about a factor of six, in a time interval of a few years. After reaching its maximum in coincidence with the XMM-Newton pointing in December 2000 the flux decreased in later years, as revealed by Swift. The very good statistics available in the 0.5-10 keV XMM-Newton X-ray spectrum reveals a highly significant deviation from a single power law. A log-parabolic model with a best fit curvature parameter of 0.25 and a peak energy at ~1 keV describes well the spectral shape of the synchrotron emission. The simultaneous fit of Swift UVOT and XRT data provides a milder curvature (b ̃0.1) and a peak at higher energies (~15 keV), suggesting a different state of source activity. In both cases UVOT data support the scenario of a single synchrotron emission component extending from the optical/UV to the X-ray band.
Conclusions: New X-ray observations are important to monitor the temporal and spectral evolution of the source; new generation γ-ray telescopes like AGILE and GLAST may for the first time detect its inverse Compton emission
"THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF THE BSA TAURODEOXYCHOLATE SYSTEM"
The interaction between bovine serum albumin, BSA, and sodium taurodeoxycholate, NaTDC, a component of the bile in mammals, has been investigated for several protein to surfactant ratios. The solution region was investigated by surface tension, σ, freezing point depression, ΔT, emf measurements, as well as by integral heat of dilution data, ΔHi,dil. The corresponding properties of NaTDC in aqueous solutions were investigated too.
Surfactant binding onto the protein is controlled by a delicate balance of hydrophobic and electrostatic contributions, responsible for the adduct stability, but does not give rise to precipitation or coacervate formation, at least at pH around 6.0. The observed behaviour is in line with current knowledge on the solution behaviour of BSA–TDC complexes occurring in hepatic and gallbladder bile
Swift detection of all previously undetected blazars in a micro-wave flux-limited sample of WMAP foreground sources
Almost the totality of the bright foreground sources in the WMAP Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) maps are blazars, a class of sources that show usually also X-ray emission. However, 23 objects in a flux-limited sample of 140 blazars of the WMAP catalog (first year) were never reported before as X-ray sources. We present here the results of 41 Swift observations which led to the detection of all these 23 blazars in the 0.3-10 keV band. We conclude that all micro-wave selected blazars are X-ray emitters and that the distribution of the micro-wave to X-ray spectral slope (alpha(mu x)) of LBL blazars is very narrow, confirming that the X-ray flux of most blazars is a very good estimator of their micro-wave emission. The X-ray spectral shape of all the objects that were observed long enough to allow spectral analysis is flat and consistent with inverse Compton emission within the commonly accepted view where the radiation from blazars is emitted in a Sychrotron-Inverse-Compton scenario. We predict that all blazars and most radio galaxies above the sensitivity limit of the WMAP and of the Planck CMB missions are X-ray sources detectable by the present generation of X-ray satellites. An hypothetical all-sky soft X-ray survey with sensitivity of approximately 10(-15) erg cm(-2) s(-1) would be crucial to locate and remove over 100 000 blazars from CMB temperature and polarization maps and therefore accurately clean the primordial CMB signal from the largest population of extragalactic foreground contaminants
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
