“The Transnational Engagement of Second Generations: Young People of Egyptian Background in Italia and the Arab Uprisings
The popular mobilisations of 2010-11, known as the «Arab Spring», have had a global resonance well beyond the Arab world, affecting the lives of migrants with Arab-Mediterranean background living in Europe. Drawing on qualitative analysis, this article explores the impact of the Arab Spring on second generation’s young people of Egyptian origin living in Italy. This study shows that research participants have a diverse assessment of the outcomes of the uprisings, that they have participated in them in different ways, and that they have contributed to the construction of common or contested narratives around them, both in the public and private discourse. Moreover, the research discusses the impact of these key historical events on young people’s identity and sense of belonging, as well as on their transnational ties and practices. The transnational political engagement of research participants is examined to investigate how second generations experience a transnational life and build transnational identities. This study contributes to the debate on the relationship between transnationalism and second/third generations
Contemporary Youth Research in Arab Mediterranean Countries: Mixing Qualitative and Quantitative Research
Transformations of Cultural Norms and Values among Youths in Arab Mediterranean countries through Gender Perspectives
Attitude towards active surveillance: a cross-sectional survey among patients with uroandrological disorders
OBJECTIVES: We looked at subjective attitude towards active surveillance (AS) as the first option for cancer management in a cohort of patients seeking first medical help for uroandrological disorders prior to a formal discussion with a caregiver. DESIGN: Cross-sectional observational study. SETTING: Uroandrological outpatient clinic of a European academic centre. PARTICIPANTS: Data of 1059 patients at their first access for uroandrological purposes from January 2014 to December 2016 were analysed. INTERVENTION: Patients were invited to complete a survey with closed questions investigating their attitude towards AS, prior to any clinical evaluation. Likewise, patients were invited to score the importance given to different aspects of personal life in the case of a cancer diagnosis, using a 10-point Likert scale. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOMES MEASURES: The reported opinion towards AS management for cancer was assessed. Logistic regression analyses tested participants' sociodemographic characteristics associated with a positive opinion on AS. RESULTS: Positive, negative and doubtful attitudes towards AS were observed in 347 (33%), 331 (31%) and 381 (36%) patients, respectively. Female patients were more likely to report a negative attitude towards AS (38.7% vs 29.6%, p=0.04) while patients with previous parenthood more frequently reported a positive opinion on AS (37.2% vs 29.9%, p=0.005). Patient age emerged as the only predictor of a positive attitude towards AS (OR 1.03; 95% CI 1.01 to 1.04, p<0.001), with a 46% and 33% probability of being pro-AS for a patient aged 65 and 45 years, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: One out of three patients would express positive feedbacks on AS in the unfortunate case of tumour diagnosis, only according to his/her baseline personal opinion and prior to any discussion with a cancer caregiver. The older the patient, the higher the probability of being compliant with a conservative management for cancer
Axel Honneth e la sociologia contemporanea
The paper aims to investigate the impact of Axel Honneth’s work – in particular his theory of recognition – within sociology. After indicating the sociological elements of his theoretical proposal and comparing some current discussions, the paper sketches out the main empirical applications of the theory of recognition: contemporary identitarian configurations, the social exclusion of minority groups, social movements, intercultural relations and the changes in the world of work in late modern society. In the final part, the paper highlights some developments in contemporary sociological theory that could limit the sociological reception of Honneth’s work
Giovani in transizione.
The importance of reflexivity in social sciences is now undisputed. Various sociological and philosophical perspectives have pointed out the impossibility of the objective character of knowledge. Hence, social sciences categories need to be investigated questioning both researcher’s gaze and involvement in his/her empirical field, and research practices. The aim is shedding light on the process of knowledge and common sense construction. This new epistemological consciousness is particularly urgent above all in the light of the rapid pace of social and cultural change in global societies. We urgently need to perfect our theoretical and empirical tool-kit for tackling the spatial movement of contemporary social actors. The aim of my paper is to shed light on categories like migration, mobility and tourism from a ‘generational perspective’. Starting from the results of recent qualitative study on contemporary youth condition and the role that geographical mobility plays in young people’s transition to adulthood, my paper sets out to explore the categories of migration, mobility and tourism.
“The Transformation of Youth Cultural Norms and Values. A Gendered Analysis
The chapter reflects on the changes and continuities in the cultural norms and values related
to gender roles, gender relations and the family, as expressed and lived by young men and
women in five countries: Algeria, Morocco, Lebanon, Tunisia and Egypt. In doing so, the
chapter focusses on the processes and practices of cultural innovation emerging among
young Arab Mediterranean generations after the 2011 uprisings. The empirical analysis
presented in the chapter relies on qualitative and quantitative data collected through an
international youth survey and a multisite ethnographic fieldwork (SAHWA Youth Survey
& Ethnographic Fieldwork 2016). Young people emerge as social actors able to cope with
structural limitations and mechanisms of exclusion. At the same time, the analysis shows the
different way of inhabiting the ambivalent condition of “waithood” by young women and
young men in the region
