Shunt portosistemico congenito in un gatto

    No full text
Object of the article is a case of congenital porto-systemic shunt (PSS) in a 6 years old cat. The most important anamnestic and clinical findings were hepatic encephalopathy and ammonium urate uroliths. The diagnosis was based on clinical pathology results and abdominal ultrasonography. The cat was treated medically and had a good clinical recovery

Acquired myasthenia gravis and exfoliative dermatitis in a cat with suspect thymoma/Miastenia grave acquisita e dermatite esfoliativa in un gatto con sospetto timoma

    No full text
Acquired myasthenia gravis and a cranial mediastinal mass were diagnosed in a domestic shorthair cat with dyspnea and generalized weakness. Based on thoracic radiographs and ultrasonography and biopsy of the mass a thymoma was suspected. After an initial clinical remission with medical therapy and before the scheduled thymectomy the cat had a recurrence of the clinical signs, developed exfoliative dermatitis and died. Myasthenia gravis and exfoliative dermatitis are uncommon paraneoplastic syndromes that are sometimes associated with thymoma

    Neuromuscular electrodiagnostic studies in ferrets

Neurologic diseases are frequently reported in the domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo), but experiences with most neurodiagnostic tests in this species are limited. Especially lacking are data on clinical neurophysiology procedures. Object of this study was to establish the normal values of motor nerve conduction studies (MNCS), supramaximal repetitive nerve stimulation (SRNS), F waves and cord dorsum potentials (CDP) of tibial nerve in the domestic ferret. The tests were performed on 10 sedated domestic ferrets (6 females and 4 males) of ages ranging from 8 months to 2 years while rectal temperature was maintained above 36.5 1C. All subjects had no history of neurologic problems and unremarkable physical and neurological examinations. The sciatic-tibial nerve was stimulated at the level of the femoral neck (MNCS) and at the tarsus (MNCS, SRNS, F waves, CDP), and the muscular potentials were recorded in the plantar interosseous muscles (MNCS, SRNS, F waves). Trains of 10 stimuli with a rate of 2Hz were used for SRNS. The late responses (F waves) were obtained recording at least 20 supramaximal stimuli. CDP were recorded from the L4-L5 intervertebral space after averaging 250–500 stimulations. Only one tibial nerve for each subject was evaluated. Descriptive statistics were calculated for the main parameters. Conduction velocity, proximal and distal CMAP amplitudes of MNCS of sciatic-tibial nerve were respectively 63.25 1/_ 7.6 m/sec, 10.79 1/_ 2.7 mV, 13.02 1/_ 3.4 mV. In all ferrets for each train of SRNS were obtained decrements of less than 8% of CMAP amplitudes and areas between the first and the following waves. The late potentials (F waves) had a minimum latency of 8.49 1/_ 0.65 ms and a ‘‘F ratio’’ of 1.921/_ 0.169. CDP onset latency was 1.991/_ 0.03 ms, onset to peak latency difference was 1.85 1/_ 0.36 ms and peak amplitude was 4.92 1/_ 2.93 uV. The waveforms recorded in ferrets were not dissimilar from those found in other species. Late potentials could be elicited only with supramaximal stimuli, therefore they were probably constituted mainly by F waves, but a contamination by the H reflex can’t be excluded. Latencies of these F waves and of CDP were stable among subjects as expected for the lack of limb length variability of this species. At the authors’ knowledge this is the first report on normal values of neuromuscular electrodiagnostic studies in domestic ferrets. More studies including other electrodiagnostic tests and nerves are needed to further increase the information available for investigation of disorders affecting the peripheral nervous system of ferrets

Electrodiagnostic Examination of the Tibial Nerve in Clinically Normal Ferrets

Tibial nerves of 10 normal domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) were evaluated by means of electrodiagnostic tests: motor nerve conduction studies (MNCSs), supramaximal repetitive nerve stimulation (SRNS), F waves, and cord dorsum potentials (CDPs). Values of conduction velocity, proximal and distal compound muscular action potentials, and amplitudes of MNCS were, respectively, 63.25 ± 7.56 m/sec, 10.79 ± 2.75 mV, and 13.02 ± 3.41 mV. Mean decrements in amplitude and area of compound muscular action potentials of wave 9 with low frequency SRNS were 0.3 ± 3.83% and 0.1 ± 3.51%. The minimum latency of the F waves and the F ratio were, respectively, 8.49 ± 0.65 ms and 1.92 ± 0.17. Onset latency of CDP was 1.99 ± 0.03 ms. These tests may help in diagnosing neuromuscular disorders and in better characterizing the hindlimb paresis reported in many ferrets with systemic illnesses

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
