Laboratory-scale photomineralization of n-alkanes in gaseous phase by photocatalytic membranes immobilizing titanium dioxide

    No full text
Kinetics of photocatalytic oxidation of methane, ethane, and n-heptane, to yield intermediates, and photomineralization of intermediates, to yield carbon dioxide and water, was studied in the gaseous phase, at 308 +/- 2 K, by a laboratory-scale photoreactor and photocatalytic membranes immobilizing 30 +/- 3wt.% of TiO2, in the presence of aerosolized stoichiometric hydrogen peroxide as oxygen donor, and at a relative humidity close to 100%. The whole volume of irradiated solution was 4.000 +/- 0.005 L, the ratio between this volume and the geometrical apparent surface of the irradiated side of the photocatalytic membrane was 3.8 +/- 0.1 cm, and the absorbed power was 0.30 W/cm ( cylindrical geometry). The pinetic parameters of the present work substantially coincide with those of the same molecules previously studied in aqueous solution, within the limits of experimental uncertainty. Photocatalytic processes thus appear to be controlled by interface phenomena, which are ruled kinetically, and apparently also thermodynamically, by concentration gradients, independently on diffusion and other processes in the aqueous or gaseous bulk, if turbulence in these phases is adequately assured

Structural and electronic properties of thin Ni layers on Cu(1 1 1) as investigated by ARPES, STM and GIXD

    No full text
The growth and the crystalline and electronic structure of Ni deposited on single crystalline Cu(1 1 1) were studied by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). In the early stages of growth monoatomic-high flat Ni islands, partially covered by Cu migrating from the surface, are observed. Starting from a pseudomorphic epitaxial relationship the in-plane lattice parameter progressively relaxes with increasing coverage. For a 20 monolayer (ML) thick deposit the in-plane lattice parameter is still found halfway between the bulk Ni and Cu lattice parameters. ARPES data also rule out the layer-by-layer growth and provide the values of the Ni exchange splitting

Individualised placement support as an employment intervention for individuals with chronic pain: A qualitative exploration of stakeholder views

    No full text
Background: Individualised Placement and Support (IPS) is a tailored, client-centred employment intervention for people with chronic health conditions. It involves the integration of vocational advisers within health teams to optimise return-to-work strategies. The intervention aims to get clients into employment by complementing traditional job searching skills with placements, and one-to-one mentoring alongside a work-focused health intervention. Aim: To explore the concept of IPS for individuals with chronic pain. Design & setting: A multi-method qualitative study was designed to explore stakeholder views of IPS for individuals with chronic pain in southern England. Method: Fourteen semi-structured interviews and three focus groups were conducted with current recipients of IPS (clients), employment support workers (ESWs), and healthcare professionals (HCPs). All data were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analysed using thematic analysis. Results: In total, 11 HCPs, five ESWs, and nine clients participated in the study. The analysis identified four themes. The situations of chronic pain patients were discussed, including their complex needs, multifaceted relationship with work, support from HCPs, and existing programmes that were failing to meet their needs. The intervention input was highlighted, including the recruitment procedures and role of ESWs. Programme activities and outcomes were also identified. Conclusion: This study identified the complex needs and relationship with work of individuals with chronic pain. It showed that ESWs need to understand the unpredictability of symptoms for individuals with chronic pain and that clients may need additional support before a placement. The findings highlighted several activities for future IPS interventions and potential outcomes for future evaluation.</p

Integrin upregulation on sputum neutrophils in smokers with chronic airway obstruction

To determine the relationship between the expression of leukocyte-specific integrins in the airways and the airway obstruction in smokers, we analyzed hypertonic saline-induced sputum in 33 male subjects, age 64.7 +/- 0.5 yr (mean +/- SEM), with a smoking history of 12 to 94 pack-years, at the end of a 15-yr follow-up study. Average FEV(1)/VC ratio was 69 +/- 1% at the beginning of the study and 66 +/- 2% at the end of the follow-up period, and annual decline of FEV(1) was 20 +/- 3 ml/yr. Fourteen individuals exhibited airway obstruction as assessed by a FEV(1)/VC ratio lower than 63.3%. Differential leukocyte count was performed on cytospin preparations and the expression of integrin alpha (CD11a, CD11b, CD11c) and beta (CD18) chains was assessed on granulocytes and mononuclear cells by immunocytology. The numbers of neutrophils expressing CD11b and CD18, but not CD11c or CD11a, were increased in the subjects with airway obstruction compared with those without airway obstruction. CD11b- and CD18-positive neutrophils were negatively correlated with FEV(1)/VC ratio (p < 0.01). No significant correlations were found between CD11a-, CD11b-, CD11c-, CD18-positive mononuclear cells and lung function measurements. In conclusion, our results suggest that leukocyte-specific integrin CD11b/CD18 expressed on sputum polymorphonuclear leukocytes represents a marker for the smokers who develop chronic airway obstruction

Prosumer networks – A key enabler of control over renewable energy resources

    No full text
The global challenges of recent years have exacerbated the energy crisis and highlighted the need for reactive and resilient energy systems. This paper emphasises the role of collaborative networks of prosumers in exploiting renewable energy sources to achieve sovereignty over critical resources. A bibliometric study reveals significant discrepancies between countries in statutory energy policies for renewable energy integration and incentives to prosumerism. A dataset of 27 Romanian individual prosumers illustrates the differences in load profiles between residential and industrial prosumers in a temperate continental climate, highlighting the benefits and limits of increasing the share of renewable energy in the national energy system. The study shows the advantage of aggregators balancing production and consumption, provided enough storage capability is available. It also illustrates the evolution of Romanian prosumers, discussing key regulatory and technological factors, advantages, and barriers to collaboration. This research offers municipalities, public authorities, and infrastructure operators a path towards energy independence, in alignment with international efforts toward the adoption of renewable energy. The study provides valuable insights into the benefits and challenges of renewable energy integration, offering practical solutions for achieving energy independence. It also offers relevant information in the effort of legislative harmonization to enable efficient and secure integration of new actors in the electricity system, encouraging responsible prosumers and aggregators and discouraging opportunistic aggregation

    Paragus romanicus Stanescu 1992

Published as part of Bessat, Marie, Speight, Martin C.
