Italian Diaspora and Foreign Direct Investment: A Cliometric Perspective
Recent economic literature highlights that migrant networks help to overcome the informal barriers that exist in the international markets and boost international investment. Empirical studies on different countries confirm this prediction. This paper estimates (OLS-IV) an econometric model to study the impact of both emigration and immigration on Italy’s bilateral foreign direct investment (FDI). The main result is that only the Italian diaspora has a significant positive effect on Italy’s both inward and outward FDI. A theoretical framework, a profile of the diaspora and of immigration in Italy and some exemplary entrepreneurial histories help to interpret the econometric evidence.International Investments, Migrant Networks, Entrepreneurial Histories
Efficient material-abstraction : towards a critical materialist pragmatics
Marx's critique remains the most incisive analysis of capitalism to date, though the
transformations which capitalism has undergone require that his conceptual apparatus
be radically overhauled. I have attempted to do so through a topological twisting of his
conceptual assemblage, highlighting new elements and relations. In this way I am lead
to questions of time already highlighted by Marx, in relation to an immanent and
constitutive ontology. However, my primary concern remains with the contemporary
strategies of capitalist command, and the new conditions and strategies of resistance it
demands.
Concrete/Abstract: or. The German Ideology - i)The question of ideology, the failure
of its problematic, and the initial step beyond: fetishism as 'dissimulation objective'
(Deleuze); ii) the function of money and the emergent 'truth in practice' of an ontology
of efficient material-abstraction.
Total Critique is a Pragmatics - i) The transformation of Critique from partial to Total,
and the emergence of a differential materialist ontology, ii) the critique of the labour
theory of value, and the transformation of capitalism into a project of heterogeneity
management (fundamental ontology).
Subsumption - i) An account of Braudel's notion of the anti-market, and a critique of the
reduction of the anti-market to capitalism; ii) an account of real subsumption in terms of a
temporal ontology.
Time and Resistance - i) A re-reading of 'historical determinism' in the light of Marx's
letters to Vera Zasulich on the Russian commune; ii) the question of becoming as
opposed to history through a diagramming of masses rather than the contraposing of
classes; iii) temporality as motor of flight/control: the syntheses of time as a
diagramming of efficient capitalist material-abstraction, and of the strategies of a
critical materialist pragmatics
European Avant-Garde: Art, Borders and Culture in Relationship to Mainstream Cinema and New Media
This research analyses the impact of transformation and hybridization processes at the intersection of art, science and technology. These forms of transformation and hybridization are the result of contemporary interactions between classic and digital media.
It discusses the concept of 'remediation' presented by Bolter and proposes the concept of 'digital ekphrasis,' which is based on Manovich' s analyses of the interactions between classic and digital media. This is a model which, borrowed from semiotic structures, encompasses the technical as well as aesthetic and philosophical transformations of contemporary media.
The thesis rejects Baudrillard's and Virilio's proposed concepts of 'digital black hole' as the only possible form of evolution of contemporary digital media. It proposes a different concept for the evolutionary model of contemporary hybridization processes based on contemporary forms of hybridizations that are rooted in aesthetic, philosophical and technological developments. This concept is argued as emancipated from the 'religious' idea of a 'divine originated' perfect image that Baudrillard and Virilio consider to be deteriorated from contemporary hybridization experimentation.
The thesis proposes, through historical examples in the fine arts, the importance of transmedia migrations and experimentations as the framework for a philosophical, aesthetic and technological evolutionary concept of humanity freed from the restrictions of religious imperatives
New Directions in the History of Written Culture
This article reviews some new directions in the history of writing practices, concentrating on Western Europe and the Americas in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. I identify some major intellectual influences on the field, deriving from historiography, anthropology and literary studies. I indicate some important archives specialising in popular writings which sustain the study of the writings of ordinary and semi-literate people. A few selected topics in which the history of writing practices makes a contribution are then briefly reviewed. These are, firstly, the history of correspondence and letter-writing instruction manuals, which introduces two important concepts: the ‘epistolary pact’ and ‘epistolary literacy’. Secondly, I introduce three new works on the development of postal services, stressing their role in forging national cohesion. Thirdly, I indicate how the study of emigrants’ writings has contributed to a shift of focus in the study of emigration in general. I conclude that the history of scribal culture can make a significant contribution to socio-cultural history, provided that writing is analysed in its material form, and as a text, not simply as a source of information. Writing practices deserve serious study as a social and cultural phenomenon in their own right.
