A NAD(P)H oxidase isolated from the archaeon Sulfolobus solfataricus is not homologous with another NADH oxidase present in the same microorganism

    No full text
A NAD(P)H oxidase has been isolated from the ar- chaeon Sulfolobus solfataricus. The enzyme is a ho- modimer with Mr 38,000 per subunit (SsNOX38) contain- ing 1 FAD molecule/subunit. It oxidizes NADH and, less efficiently, NADPH with the formation of hydrogen per- oxide. The enzyme was resistant against chemical and physical denaturating agents. The temperature for its half-denaturation was 93 and 75 °C in the absence or presence, respectively, of 8 M urea. The enzyme did not show any reductase activity. The SsNOX38 encoding gene was cloned and sequenced. It accounted for a prod- uct of 36.5 kDa. The translated amino acid sequence was made of 332 residues containing two putative -fold regions, typical of NAD- and FAD-binding proteins. The primary structure of SsNOX38 did not show any homol- ogy with the N-terminal amino acid sequence of a NADH oxidase previously isolated from S. solfataricus (Ss- NOX35) (Masullo, M., Raimo, G., Dello Russo, A., Boc- chini, V. and Bannister, J. V. (1996) Biotechnol. Appl. Biochem. 23, 47–54). Conversely, it showed 40% sequence identity with a putative thioredoxin reductase from Ba- cillus subtilis, but it did not contain cysteines, which are essential for the activity of the reductase

Violent or non-violent action? Wartime civilian resistance in Colombia and Mozambique

    No full text
Why do some communities resist armed groups non-violently while others take up arms to do so? Recent research has advanced our knowledge of the causes and consequences of wartime civilian resistance. Yet, the factors explaining the emergence and outcomes of civilian resistance do not account for how people resist. Despite its important consequences for the politics and geography of war, the issue of why civilians engage in violent or non-violent forms of resistance remains poorly understood. We rely on extensive original fieldwork to examine within-case and cross-case variation in violent and non-violent resistance campaigns during the Mozambican and Colombian civil wars. We argue that forms of resistance are linked to prior experiences of collective action, normative commitments, and the role of local political entrepreneurs. Previous experiences make repertoires of resistance “empirically” available, while prevailing local social and cultural norms make them “normatively” available. Political entrepreneurs activate and adapt what is empirically and normatively available to mobilize support for some forms of action and against others. Our analysis advances emerging research on wartime civilian agency and has significant implications for theories of armed conflict, civil resistance, and contentious politics more broadly.NWOInstitutions, Decisions and Collective Behaviou

Oral administration of chronic physostigmine does not improve cognitive or mnesic performances in Alzheimer's presenile dementia

    No full text
Physostigmine was administered orally 1 mg q.i.d. for one month to 8 patients with a clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's presenile dementia. The possible beneficial effects of the drug were evaluated by means of a neuropsychological battery administered to all patients before and after treatment. The performances obtained by demented patients on retest did not show any difference in comparison with performances obtained on the first neuropsychologic assessment. Some implications of these negative results are briefly discussed

Figure femminili classiche nella poesia di Fadwà Tuqan, tra conformità e trasgressione

    No full text
Several trends and influences combine in the poetry of the Palestinian author Fadwà Tuqan (1917-2003). Her first collections show how she adheres to the trends of the classical Arabic tradition, both in forms and subjects; the author then gradually commits herself towards new structures, and political themes. This essay focuses on the presence and persistence of issues related to classical literature in Fadwà Tuqan’s poetry, both in her early works and, reelaborated in a symbolic and sometimes provocative way, in her following production

Stereotipi, lingua e società : Un'analisi dei pregiudizi legati ad accenti italiani e stranieri

    No full text

Acute administration of individual optimal dose of physostigmine fails to improve mnesic performances in Alzheimers Presenile Dementia

    No full text
Eight patients affected by Alzheimer's Presenile Dementia (AD) received acute administration of physostigmine individual optimal dose per os (n = 4) or subcutaneously (n = 4). The individual physostigmine dose was assessed by means of serum cholinesterase activity monitoring. The possible beneficial effects after treatment were evaluated by using two memory tests: Reys' 15 words and Digit Span from Wechsler memory scale. Although a slight behavioral activation was noted in all patients after treatment, the comparison between mean scores obtained by AD patients in mnesic tests before and after the acute physostigmine administration, with either therapeutic modality, failed to reach the level of statistical significance. Some implications of these disappointing results are briefly discussed
