We present the first measurement of P1D with the quadratic maximum likelihood estimator (QMLE) from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey early data sample. This early sample of 54 600 quasars is already comparable in size to the largest previous studies, and we conduct a thorough investigation of numerous instrumental and analysis systematic errors to evaluate their impact on DESI data with QMLE. We demonstrate the excellent performance of the spectroscopic pipeline noise estimation and the impressive accuracy of the spectrograph resolution matrix with 2D image simulations of raw DESI images that we processed with the DESI spectroscopic pipeline. We also study metal line contamination and noise calibration systematics with quasar spectra on the red side of the Ly α emission line. In a companion paper, we present a similar analysis based on the Fast Fourier Transform estimate of the power spectrum. We conclude with a comparison of these two approaches and discuss the key sources of systematic error that we need to address with the upcoming DESI Year 1 analysis. This material is based upon work supported by the U.S. Department

Comparison of results of transcatheter aortic valve implantation in patients with severely stenotic bicuspid versus tricuspid or nonbicuspid valves
Data on transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for severe bicuspid aortic valve (BAY) stenosis and how this compares to that for tricuspid aortic valve (TAV) stenosis are limited. Twenty-one consecutive patients with BAV were treated with the Edwards or Core Valve bioprosthesis from November 2007 to December 2012 at San Raffaele Scientific Institute and Clinical Institute S. Ambrogio, Milan, Italy. Results were compared with a cohort of patients with TAV (n=447) treated with the same bioprostheses over the same period. Procedural 1- and 12-month outcomes were examined as defined by the Valve Academic Research Consortium criteria. Patients with BAY were younger (76.7 +/- 7.1 vs 79.8 +/- 7.4 years, p=0.06) and with a larger aortic annulus (25.0 +/- 1.8 vs 23.6 +/- 2.1 mm, p=0.01). Device success (85.7% vs 94.4%, p=0.10) was lower in patients with BAY. Although the 30-day composite safety end point (23.8% vs 21.0%, p=0.76) was similar between the 2 groups, mortality rate at 30 days was higher (14.2% vs 3.6%, p=0.02) in the BAY group. Cardiovascular mortality at 1 year did not differ significantly between the 2 groups (10.5% vs 7.4%, p=0.62). In conclusion, transcatheter aortic valve implantation in high surgical risk patients with severe BAY stenosis appears to be feasible with mid-term cardiovascular mortality similar to that for patients with TAV. Early survival and device success, however, were lower for patients with BAY demonstrating that further studies are required to identify which subset of patients with BAY is best suited for transcatheter treatment. A control engineering approach to the assessment of supply chain resilience
This is an Author's Accepted Manuscript of an article published in International Journal of Production Research, 50(21), 6162 - 6187, 2012 [copyright Taylor & Francis], available online at: http://www.tandfonline.com/10.1080/00207543.2012.710764.There is no consensus on the supply chain management definition of resilience. To aid in evaluating the dynamic behaviour of such systems we need to establish clearly elucidated performance criteria that encapsulate the attributes of resilience. A literature review establishes the latter as readiness, responsiveness and recovery. We also identify robustness as a necessary condition that would complement resilience. We find that the Integral of the Time Absolute Error (ITAE) is an appropriate control engineering measure of resilience when it is applied to inventory levels and shipment rates. We use the ITAE to evaluate an often used benchmark model of make-to-stock supply chains consisting of three decision parameters. We use both linear and nonlinear forms of the model in our evaluation. Our findings suggest that optimum solutions for resilience do not yield a system that is robust to uncertainties in lead-time. Hence supply chains will experience drastic changes in their resilience performance when lead-time changes
Targeting prostate cancer cells with D2B-gold Nanoparticles
In this study, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with an estimate diameter of 25 nm have been synthesized in water using sodium citrate as both reducing and stabilizing agent at ~95 C and in the presence of sodium hydroxide. The generated AuNPs were characterized using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and Zeta potential measurements. Additionally, AuNPs were coated with D2B, a monoclonal antibody (mAb) recognizing an extracellular epitope of the human prostate specific membrane antigen (hPSMA). Binding of antibodies to PSMA induces its endocytosis, thereby marking PSMA as a docking site for the delivery of therapeutic agents. To attain a stabilized and covalent bond between D2B and AuNPs the strong S-Au bond was exploited; so, the sulfhydryl group (SH) in a cysteine of the D2B was utilized. Binding of D2B to AuNPs-citrate colloidal solution caused a red shift with a higher wavelength of about 15 nm in the UV-Vis spectra. Furthermore, as a confirmation of the successful conjugation, DLS revealed an increase in both the AuNPs size from ~25 to ~63 nm and Zeta potential measurements for AuNPs-citrate from ~ -45 mV to -23 mV. The cytotoxicity of D2B-AuNPs was assessed using the WST-1 cell proliferation assay and the agarose gel DNA fragmentation method. Finally, the specific delivery and binding of our customized NPs was tested using flow cytometry and western blot. Our results pave the way for further research using coated NPs as vehicles for drug delivery in in vitro as well as in vivo models

Toward Sustainable, Colorless, and Transparent Photovoltaics: State of the Art and Perspectives for the Development of Selective Near-Infrared Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells
Dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) is one of the promising photovoltaic (PV) technologies for applications requiring high aesthetic features combined with energy production such as building integration PV (BIPV). In this context, DSSCs have the ability to be wavelength selective, thanks to the development of new sensitizers by molecular engineering. The long history of dye research has afforded is technology different colorations for reaching panchromatic light absorption. However, nearly 45% of radiation from sunlight lies in the near-infrared (NIR) region, where human cones are not sensitive. This review provides the reader with key information on how to selectively exploit this region to develop colorless and transparent PV based on DSSC technology. Besides selective NIR absorbers, the triptych photoanode, counter-electrode, and redox mediator are together contributing to reach high aesthetic features. Details of all the components, interplay, and an opinion on the technological limitations to reach colorless and transparent NIR-DSSC are herein discussed in relationship with BIPV applications
