    No full text
The Marginal Master: Return to Everett C. Hughes, is a tribute the journal Sociologica (il Mulino) has decided to devote to this neglected but highly influential scholar of the Chicago tradition of social research and social theory. It features contributions by specialists as well as original papers by Hughes for the first time here published. The Canadian Rick Helmes-Hayes is one of the experts worldwide on this subject, while Marco Santoro is the editor of the first Italian edition of Hughes' writings, published in that same 2010 by il Mulino. Among the contributors to this special you can find also a renown scholar as Howard S. Becker, student in the 40s and 50 of Hughes as well as long-time collaborator of Hughes' in famous empirical researches. Among the unpublished papers, "Innocents Abroad, 1948. Or How to Behave in Occupied Germany", the celebrated "Outline for the Sociological Study of an Occupation", and a "Memorandum on Total Institutions", which Hughes wrote and sent to Erving Goffman in the early 60

Käesolev töö on ametialaste arenguplaanide digitaliseerimisest Helmeses. Helmes on\n\rrahvusvaheline tarkvaraarendus ettevõte, mis soovib tagada oma töötajatele tipptasemel\n\rametialase arengu maailmas. Selleks on Helmes välja töötanud arenguplaanid tarkvaraarendajatele. Current thesis is about digitizing Professional Development Roadmap in Helmes. Helmes,\n\ran international software services company, strives to have a world leading professional\n\rdevelopment for its employees. To achieve this, Helmes has implemented a Professional\n\rDevelopment Roadmap for every software developer. Professional Development Roadmap\n\ris a structured set of competence levels, expectations and recommendations of what, how\n\rand when a developer needs to improve in order to efficiently develop professionally.\n\rHelmes had the Professional Development Roadmaps in the form of physical booklets,\n\rwhich had several restrictions such as difficulties when updating its contents.\n\r\n\rThis thesis aims to solve the problems associated with a physical booklet to create, maintain and develop Professional Development Roadmaps. The author applied business analysis for identifying the underlying business needs, analyse the current situation and finally, select and implement a solution that addresses the current needs and problems.\n\r\n\rThe problems were solved by developing a web application which enables to manage Professional Development Roadmaps and keep track on the employees’ Professional Development Roadmaps. In result, Helmes specialists have latest version of Professional Development Roadmap and it is better to support employees’ professional development

THE ANTHEM COMPANION TO EVERETT HUGHES

    No full text
The Anthem Companion to Everett Hughes is a comprehensive and updated critical discussion of Hughes’s contribution to sociology and his current legacy in the social sciences. A global team of scholars discusses issues such as the international circulation of Hughes’s work, his intellectual biography, his impact on current ethnographic research practices and the use in current research of such Hughesian concepts as master status, dirty work and bastard institutions. This companion is a useful reference for students of classical sociology, practitioners of ethnographic research and scholars of sociology in the Chicagoan tradition

Isospin-0 ππ scattering from twisted mass lattice QCD

    No full text
We present results for the isospin-0 pipipipi s-wave scattering length calculated in twisted mass lattice QCD. We use three Nf=2N_f = 2 ensembles with unitary pion mass at its physical value, 240~MeV and 330~MeV respectively. We also use a large set of Nf=2+1+1N_f = 2 + 1 +1 ensembles with unitary pion masses varying in the range of 230~MeV - 510~MeV at three different values of the lattice spacing. A mixed action approach with the Osterwalder-Seiler action in the valence sector is adopted to circumvent the complications arising from isospin symmetry breaking of the twisted mass quark action. Due to the relatively large lattice artefacts in the Nf=2+1+1N_f = 2 + 1 +1 ensembles, we do not present the scattering lengths for these ensembles. Instead, taking the advantage of the many different pion masses of these ensembles, we qualitatively discuss the pion mass dependence of the scattering properties of this channel based on the results from the Nf=2+1+1N_f = 2 + 1 +1 ensembles. The scattering length is computed for the Nf=2N_f = 2 ensembles and the chiral extrapolation is performed. At the physical pion mass, our result MpiamathrmI=00=0.198(9)(6)M_pi a^mathrm{I=0}_0 = 0.198(9)(6) agrees reasonably well with various experimental measurements and theoretical predictions

Isospin-0 ππ\pi\pi s-wave scattering length from twisted mass lattice QCD

We present results for the isospin-0 ππ s-wave scattering length calculated with Osterwalder-Seiler valence quarks on Wilson twisted mass gauge configurations. We use three Nf=2 ensembles with unitary (valence) pion mass at its physical value (250 MeV), at 240 MeV (320 MeV) and at 330 MeV (400 MeV), respectively. By using the stochastic Laplacian Heaviside quark smearing method, all quark propagation diagrams contributing to the isospin-0 ππ correlation function are computed with sufficient precision. The chiral extrapolation is performed to obtain the scattering length at the physical pion mass. Our result Mπa0I=0=0.198(9)(6) agrees reasonably well with various experimental measurements and theoretical predictions. Since we only use one lattice spacing, certain systematics uncertainties, especially those arising from unitary breaking, are not controlled in our result

A weak convergence approach to inventory control using a long-term average criterion

This publication is with permission of the rights owner freely accessible due to an Alliance licence and a national licence (funded by the DFG, German Research Foundation) respectively. In this paper we continue the examination of inventory control in which the inventory is modeled by a diffusion process and a long-term average cost criterion is used to make decisions. The class of such models under consideration has general drift and diffusion coefficients, and boundary points that are consistent with the notion that demand should tend to reduce the inventory level. The conditions on the cost functions are greatly relaxed from those in Helmes et al. (2017). Characterization of the cost of a general (s, S) policy as a function of two variables naturally leads to a nonlinear optimization problem over the ordering levels s and S. Existence of an optimizing pair (s*, S*) is established for these models under very weak conditions; nonexistence of an optimizing pair is also discussed. Using average expected occupation and ordering measures and weak convergence arguments, weak conditions are given for the optimality of the (s*, S*) ordering policy in the general class of admissible policies. The analysis involves an auxiliary function that is globally C2 and which, together with the infimal cost, solves a particular system of linear equations and inequalities related to but different from the long-term average Hamilton‒Jacobi‒Bellman equation. This approach provides an analytical solution to the problem rather than a solution involving intricate analysis of the stochastic processes. The range of applicability of these results is illustrated on a drifted Brownian motion inventory model, both unconstrained and reflected, and on a geometric Brownian motion inventory model under two different cost structures.Peer Reviewe
