This is acknowledged in consensus documents. The drug also has a good safety profile and a pharmacoeconomic advantage due to a reduction in the number of hospitalizations for asthma attacks. In recent years, some studies have shown that omalizumab is effective also in nonallergic asthma. Effects on the complex signaling mechanisms leading to activation of effector cells and to mediator release may account for this outcome. Indeed, omalizumab has been reported to be effective in a number of IgE-mediated and non-IgE-mediated disorders. Concerning the former, clinical efficacy has been observed in rhinitis, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, latex allergy, atopic dermatitis, allergic urticaria, and anaphylaxis. In addition, omalizumab has been demonstrated to be able to prevent systemic reactions to allergen immunotherapy, thus enabling completion of treatment in patients who otherwise would have to stop it. Concerning non-IgE-mediated disorders, omalizumab has been reported to be effective in nasal polyposis, autoimmune urticaria, chronic idiopathic urticaria, physical urticaria, idiopathic angioedema, and mastocytosis. Current indications for treatment with omalizumab are confined to severe allergic asthma. Consequently, any other prescription can only be off-label. However, it is reasonable to expect that the use of omalizumab will be approved for particularly important indications, such as anaphylaxis, in the near future. Keywords: hypersensitivity, immunoglobulin E, anti-IgE, omalizumab, asthma, atopic dermatitis, anaphylaxis, urticaria, mastocytosi

Storia della politica internazionale nell'età contemporanea, 1815-1992

This book supplies an introductory overview of 19th and 20th century international politics based on the analysis of its essential structures, its basic dynamics, and its most daunting challenges. After having described the long-term evolution of the system of international relations, the author focuses on the specific features of contemporary international issues and shows how they are tightly linked to other aspects of history: geography, economics, culture, ideology, politics, religion, and military power

Gli studi internazionali sulla Democrazia cristiana italiana. Qualche considerazione introduttiva

    No full text
The article examines the international scholarly literature on the Italian Christian Democratic Party produced by historians and political scientists. The author remarks that this literature has been significant, although not particularly abundant, and examines the various readings that have been proposed over the decades, from the first coeval interpretations to the more documented reflections of the years that followed the end of the Cold War. What emerges from this analysis is the picture of a rich and multifaceted literature, which however still shows some shortcomings, also due to the marginal attention international scholars have paid to the Italian political history

Relative bioavailability of microgranulated sulfamethazine in veal calves

The kinetics of free and microgranulated sulfadimidine were compared in milk-fed calves dosed orally (180 mg/kg) in a crossover study. Microgranulation results in delayed absorption of sulfadimidine and poor bioavailability, with the area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC(0-infinity)) reduced from 7400 to 3781 micrograms.h/mL, and maximum plasma concentration (Cmax) reduced from 188.1 +/- 39.0 to 84.41 +/- 22.6 micrograms/mL. It is concluded that sulfadimidine microgranulated with long chain fatty acids is not suitable for use in milk-fed calves; the gastrointestinal transit time is too rapid to allow full release of the drug, markedly limiting its bioavailability. In adult animals, or in the young of other animal species in which digesta transit time is slower than in calves, the bioavailability of microgranulated sulfadimidine may be much greater
