    Determination of P(c -> D*(+)) and BR(c -> l(+)) at LEP 1

    No full text
    The probability P(c --> D*(+)) that a charm quark fragments into a D*+ meson and the c --> l(+) semileptonic branching fraction were measured in Z(0) decay into c (c) over bar events. From the analysis of 3.5 Million Z(0) events collected from 1992 to 1995, a sample of charm meson decays with 81% c (c) over bar purity was selected. The product of the c --> D*(+) fragmentation probability times the D*(+) --> D(0)pi(+) branching fraction was measured to be: P(c --> D*(+)).BR(D*(+) --> D(0)pi(+)) = 0.174 +/- 0.010(stat) +/- 0.004(syst). Using the world averaged value for BR(D*+ --> D(0)pi(+)), the fragmentation probability is inferred: P(c --> D*(+)) = 0.255 +/- 0.015(stat) +/- 0.006(syst) +/- 0.005(syst.BR). From the same sample, 1828 +/- 51 identified leptons in the opposite hemisphere were selected. From this sample, the charm semileptonic branching fraction was measured to be: BR(c --> l(+)) = 0.0958 +/- 0.0042(stat) +/- 0.0028(syst)

    Measurements of the Z partial decay width into c(c)over-bar and multiplicity of charm quarks per b decay

    No full text
    The partial decay width R-c of the Z into c (c) over bar quark pair and the number of charm quarks n(c) per b decay are measured with the DELPHI detector at LEP 1. Particle identification provides clear DO, D+, D-s(+) and Lambda(c)(+) signatures. The charm hadron production rate is measured in each channel by a fit to the scaled energy, impact parameter information and the invariant mass spectrum. Two measurements of R-c are presented, from the D*(+) production rate and from the overall charm counting, including strange charm baryon production, in c (c) over bar events. The multiplicity n(c), which includes hidden c (c) over bar and strange charm baryon production, is inferred from the charm counting in bb events. The final results are R-c = 0.1665 +/- 0.0095 and n(c) = 1.166 +/- 0.086

    Jean Jaurès, una coscienza lacerata: la pace, la nazione, la guerra

    Jean Jaurès è stato sicuramente tra i leader più autorevoli della Seconda Internazionale e padre putativo del socialismo francese. Morto assassinato alla vigilia della Grande Guerra egli incarnò i laceranti dubbi dei socialisti del suo tempo sospesi tra fedeltà alla causa internazionalista e patriottismo cercandone però una sintesi identitaria armonica. Nei suoi scritti e discorsi egli affrontò più volte il tema del travaglio delle società europee di fronte al dramma del primo conflitto mondiale e se ne fece intrpretete e portavoce politico. Una lettura originale che attenua molti dei miti che avvolgono lo scoppio della Grande Guerra, è anche vero che non poche furono le avvisaglie che negli anni precedenti avevano avvicinato all'idea di un conflitto reale e che avevano sollevato nelle coscienze più sensibili ansie e interrogativi. Non solo. La convinzione spesso diffusa di un consenso compatto verso la guerra nazionalista si stempera nella testimonianza dell'esistenza di una popolazione pacifista e poco sedotta dalla cultura della guerra. Nel pensiero, nell'attività politica e nelle pagine del grande tribuno francese prende così corpo quella complessità della relazione tra pace e guerra destinata a interrogare a più riprese le coscienze europee del Novecento.Jean Jaurès was certainly among the most authoritative leaders of the Second International and putative father of French socialism. Dead assassinated on the eve of the Great War, he embodied the lacerating doubts of the socialists of his time suspended between loyalty to the internationalist cause and patriotism, however seeking a harmonious synthesis of identity. In his writings and speeches he repeatedly addressed the issue of the suffering of European societies in the face of the tragedy of the First World War and became an interpreter and political spokesman. An original reading that mitigates many of the myths that surround the outbreak of the Great War, it is also true that there were many signs that in previous years had brought to the idea of a real conflict and that had raised anxieties and questions in the most sensitive consciences. Not only. The often widespread belief of a compact consensus towards the nationalist war is diluted in the testimony of the existence of a pacifist population and little seduced by the culture of war. In the thought, in the political activity and in the pages of the great French tribune, the complexity of the relationship between peace and war destined to question the European consciences of the twentieth century takes shape

    Paradoxes of legal custom

    Traducción de Edith Cuautle RodríguezEn este artículo, el autor, inspirándose en la interpretación propuesta por Kripke de algunos pasajes de las Investigaciones Filosóficas de Wittgenstein, discute algunas paradojas en las que, en su opinión, incurren el discurso de la ciencia jurídica y el de la doctrina cuando identifican al usus y a la opinio iuris seu necessitatis como elementos esenciales de la costumbre jurídica.Under the light of Kripke’s interpretation of some paragraphs of Wittgenstein’ s Philosophical Investigations, the author of this paper denounces the paradoxes resulting, in his opinion, when usus and opinio iuris seu necessistatis are considered —as legal science and doctrine do—necessary elements in the identification of legal customs

    La costituzione delle differenze. Giusnaturalismo e codificazione del diritto civile nella Prussia del '700

    The book goes through the philosophical and theoretical origins of private law codification in Prussia, which ends with the promulgation of the Allgemeines Landrechte für die Preußischen Staaten of 1794. The Prussian codification movement seems to be very interesting from the point of view of historiography: it shows the attempt to conjugate the universality of positive law, as an expression of the unity of the State, with the particularity of the different social-economic characteristics of the German status society at the end XVIIIth century. First of all the Author analyses the origins of this movement in the practical philosophy of Ch. Wolff, father of the preussisches Neturrecht. Wolff works out a theory of society and civil relationships based on the concept of status: he identifies rights and duties of individuals starting from their particular actions fields within the society, working for common purpose. Wolff’s work underlines, therefore, the persisting in the German XVIIIth century of the influence of Aristotelian social philosophy, throughout the typical mathematic method of modern Jurisprudence. The Author then, analyses the revision of juridical and political Wolffian’s philosophy within his School (Darjes, Nettelblad, Svarez, Klein): here the Aristotelian tradition is joined together with the principles of modern natural Law (Hobbes and Pufendorf), and with the concept of sovereignty: the particularity or the rights and duties, which belongs to every personal status, becomes a product of the sovereign’s will, in which everybody recognises his owns. This assumption opens to a new conception of civil order, in which the universality of law integrates with the particularity of personal conditions. The movement for civil rights carried out by German Enlightment before French Revolution, doesn’t involve the suppression of the ancient status society, but his integration within the administration of the State. Another chapter of the book deals with the transformations of roman law tradition in the XVIIIth century, which gave to the scientia iuris civilis his basic categories. The roman law tradition contributes in particular to create the normative instruments for the realization of this social and political project. In the last chapter the Author analyses the structure of the Allgemeines Landrecht für die Preußischen Staaten of 1794, showing how the principles of Preußisches Naturrecht became normative instruments and the differences between this code and the other European codification experiences
