ARATA’s response to the NDIA’s assistive technology discussion paper

    No full text
The Australian Rehabilitation and Assistive Technology Association (ARATA) responds to the NDIA’s AT Discussion Paper, and advocates that roles for all stakeholders must be considered.  • Summary of ARATA\u27s key recommendations arising from the Discussion Paper: 1. Evaluate outcomes from AT provision in trial sites and other systems to inform in the development of procurement and service delivery policy, consumer supports, and continuing professional development. 2. Support practitioners and researchers to validate existing AT service models for use in Australia. 3. Assist ARATA and other key stakeholders to develop a national accreditation system for AT practitioners and suppliers. 4. Investigate and document the roles, activities, and scope of practice of suppliers and peer mentors in AT service delivery, and associated outcomes for AT users. 5. Ensure the coupling of AT devices with appropriate soft technology support for device selection, implementation and review. 6. Investigate the efficacy and potential expansion of existing peer and consumer networking channels. 7. Support research into consumer use of information and decision-making in AT provision. 8. Fund independent AT information services and explore options for facilitating consumer ratings of products and services. 9. Identify AT products not yet available on the Australian market. 10. Fund research into AT development and commercialisation in Australia.&nbsp

Movement Behaviour of Traditionally Managed Cattle in the Eastern Province of Zambia Captured Using Two-Dimensional Motion Sensors

    No full text
Two-dimensional motion sensors use electronic accelerometers to record the lying, standing and walking activity of cattle. Movement behaviour data collected automatically using these sensors over prolonged periods of time could be of use to stakeholders making management and disease control decisions in rural sub-Saharan Africa leading to potential improvements in animal health and production. Motion sensors were used in this study with the aim of monitoring and quantifying the movement behaviour of traditionally managed Angoni cattle in Petauke District in the Eastern Province of Zambia. This study was designed to assess whether motion sensors were suitable for use on traditionally managed cattle in two veterinary camps in Petauke District in the Eastern Province of Zambia. In each veterinary camp, twenty cattle were selected for study. Each animal had a motion sensor placed on its hind leg to continuously measure and record its movement behaviour over a two week period. Analysing the sensor data using principal components analysis (PCA) revealed that the majority of variability in behaviour among studied cattle could be attributed to their behaviour at night and in the morning. The behaviour at night was markedly different between veterinary camps; while differences in the morning appeared to reflect varying behaviour across all animals. The study results validate the use of such motion sensors in the chosen setting and highlight the importance of appropriate data summarisation techniques to adequately describe and compare animal movement behaviours if association to other factors, such as location, breed or health status are to be assessed.</p

Signatures, stamps and ex libris: evolution of indications of property in the library of the Argentine Humanist Pedro N. Arata

The article studies signatures, seals and ex libris used by Pedro N. Arata to identify the books belonging to his personal collection, kept today at the Arata library of the Faculty of Agrarian Sciences, University of Buenos Aires. The analysis of these traces further allows the author to outline an intellectual biography of Arata.Fil: Medan, Diego. Universidad de Buenos Aires. Facultad de Agronomia; Argentina. Reappraising the Visionary Work of Arata Isozaki: Six Decades and Four Phases

    No full text
This article analyses the work and presents a portrait of Japanese architect Arata Isozaki. His designs and buildings span six decades and it is suggested that these can be categorised into four distinctively different phases. As a former collaborator of Isozaki during the 1990s, the author is able to draw from first-hand observations and knowledge to explain relevant projects. As the discussion points out, Isozaki’s work is highly unusual, original, complex and personal in its absorption of a multitude of influences and its interdisciplinary approach; thus, one could say that he has created ideas and concepts for spaces that defy characterisation as belonging to any single school of thought

I flussi giudiziari: metodi di rilevazione, impieghi e prospettive

    No full text

Can public policies tackle the phosphorus paradox in pig farming? The case of Po-valley and Lower Saxony

    No full text
P management in agriculture is raising the attention of policy makers as well as of researchers. While the former aims at designing proper P related policy measures to restrict the P load into water, the second search for technical innovation to increase the efficiency of use of P contained in the livestock diet. Our research aims at analysing the impact of two P-related policies, limiting the P surplus application to 0 kg P/ha/year and to 4.35 kg P/ha/year respectively, on farmers’ technical decisions and on their gross margin. We focus on pig fattening farms in two highly dense livestock regions, Po-valley in Italy and Lower Saxony in Germany, and simulate alternative strategies the farm can adopt to comply with the two policies

    First Identification of 10 kpc [C ii] 158 μm Halos around Star-forming Galaxies at z = 5-7

    No full text
We report the discovery of 10 kpc [C ii] 158 μm halos surrounding star-forming galaxies in the early universe. We choose deep Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array data for 18 galaxies, each with a star formation rate of ≃10-70 M o with no signature of an active galactic nucleus whose [C ii] lines are individually detected at z = 5.153-7.142, and we conduct stacking of the [C ii] lines and dust continuum in the uv-visibility plane. The radial profiles of the surface brightnesses show a 10 kpc scale [C ii] halo at the 9.2σ level, significantly more extended than the Hubble Space Telescope stellar continuum data by a factor of ∼5 on the exponential-profile basis, as well as the dust continuum. We compare the radial profiles of [C ii] and Lyα halos universally found in star-forming galaxies at this epoch, and we find that the scale lengths agree within the 1σ level. While two independent hydrodynamic zoom-in simulations match the dust and stellar continuum properties, the simulations cannot reproduce the extended [C ii] line emission. The existence of the extended [C ii] halo is evidence of outflow remnants in the early galaxies and suggests that the outflows may be dominated by cold-mode outflows expelling the neutral gas
