Stellar disks and embedded bars in early-type galaxies

    No full text
We present photometric disk-bulge decompositions of 28 southern early-type galaxies with types T<3T<-3 in either the RC3 or ESO-Lauberts & Valentijn catalogues. The decomposition method applied here is based on that developed by Scorza & Bender (1995) but the improved version allows for arbitrary surface brightness profiles of the disk models. We find three types of objects in this sample: bulge-dominated systems, with fully embedded close to edge-on disks; disk-dominated close to edge-on objects and objects with barred disks being modestly inclined down to face-on. Like in Scorza & Bender (1995), the analysis made here indicates that the superposition of a thin disk and an elliptical bulge can give good account for the morphology of most of the galaxies. We find the disks to have a diversity of surface brightness profiles, the most frequent case being that of a disk with an exponential profile, which becomes steeper at small radii. After disk subtraction, the bulges follow more closely the r1/4r^{1/4} law. Five of the galaxies show signatures of embedded bar components. These have flat surface brightness profiles at small radii and rectangular shape, which are typical features of barred early-type galaxies. We find that the properties of the galaxies, most notably the disk-to-total ratio, correlates only modestly with the original classification of the galaxies

    Geodesign fast-workshops evidences

    No full text
The paper presents a critical overview of the main evidences deriving from the development of two GEODESIGN workshops on the same case study: urban regeneration programs in Gravina in Puglia. The field work experiences allowed to reinforce methodological awareness and its application with heterogeneous focus group. The methodological appraisal is mainly oriented to highlight positive evidences in workshop management. The case study is representative of disciplinary debate on Urban regeneration approach in fragile ancient-historic settlement and for the specific thematic focus (Systems) on which the territorial assessment process had been delivered (evaluation maps). Urban regeneration is a complex issue strongly characterized by case study structural features or bindings, actors and beneficiaries, promoters and owners. It is an effective interdisciplinary scope combining instances of architectural and technological disciplines but also social sciences and urban economy. We proposed such case study to two different focus group, whose participants were asked to negotiate strategic development scenarios starting from basic assumption and a thematic structure of context analysis. Geodesign meta-planning approach by C. Steinitz demonstrated its effectiveness as a tool to handle a “negotiation process” among different stakeholders for the achievement of a shared strategic scenario in a very short timeframe. Workshops were supported by GeodesignHub (an online platform by Geodesign Hub Pvt. Ltd., Dublin, Ireland), and were prepared according to Geodesign International Collaboration (IGC) standards

The study is focused on the complex relationship within Cesare baronio and the Spanish Monarchy, in the new political and historical context. As a cardinal, as pope confessor, as author, he had a preminent role in all the most relavant disputes between Rome, Madrid and Paris of the beginning of the 17th cent., when the balances and the alliances inside the the catholicism were changing.

    No full text

The Scorza correspondence in genus 3

In this note we prove the genus 3 case of a conjecture of Farkas and Verra on the limit of the Scorza correspondence for curves with a theta-null. Specifically, we show that the limit of the Scorza correspondence for a hyperelliptic genus 3 curve C is the union of the curve {x, σ(x) {pipe} x ∈ C} (where σ is the hyperelliptic involution), and twice the diagonal. Our proof uses the geometry of the subsystem Γ00 of the linear system {pipe}2Θ{pipe}, and Riemann identities for theta constants. © 2012 Springer-Verlag

    Las patrias de Manuel Scorza

    No full text
This article is a critical essay that uses a comparative methodology and semantic exploration in order to understand the actual and modern meanings of two poetic texts, “Patria tierna” y “Patria pobre”, concerning first at all a marvelous attitude and secondly a provocative perspective, instead that they were written in 1955. Trough the linguistic and rhetoric analysis, the author shows how Scorza expresses his poetic and ideological project about Peru, his country, contrasting two radical and opposites visions: the one metaphorical deals with hope and possibility of transforming the society, and the other prosaic position full of violence that faiths against the first one. Two axes are key on Manuel Scorza’s poetic writing: the aim of peace and social justice in Peru.

The invention of myth in Manuel Scorza\u27s novel

The article proposes a review of the treatment of myth as one of the core themes in Manuel Scorza\u27s novel saga. The central ideas of some literary critics are reviewed, but at the same time new elements are incorporated that enrich the inventiveness of the author. We stop in the study of the double function of the myth created by the novelist: as a revelation of reality and as an invention; In the latter, we present some key examples of Scorza on the creation of the other story, the defeated conscience of the protagonists, the vigil of Raymundo Herrera, the arrest of time and his publicized sentence: “I travel from myth to reality”. Methodologically we appeal to the review of Scorcian literary criticism, the studies on his work and with this we propose that the invention of the myth in Scorza is ideological, a form of social awareness that goes beyond the strictly literary purpose
