Apophatic Elements in the Theory and Practice of Psychoanalysis: Pseudo-Dionysius and C.G. Jung
This thesis identifies apophatic elements in the theory and practice of psychoanalysis through an examination of Pseudo-Dionysius and C.G. Jung. Pseudo-Dionysius brought together Greek and Biblical currents of negative theology and the via negativa. The apophatic concepts and metaphors which appear in the work of Pseudo-Dionysius are identified. The psychology of Jung can be read as a continuation and extension of the apophatic tradition. The presence of neoplatonic themes in Jung’s work is discussed, as well as his references to Pseudo-Dionysius. There is a thorough examination of Jung’s discussion of opposites, including his reception of Nicholas of Cusa’s concept of the coincidence of opposites. The role of the transcendent function in Jung’s psychology is reviewed. The work of contemporary scholars of religion, philosophers and Jungian theorists are compared to Jung’s using the lens of apophasis. There is an exploration of ways in which motifs in Pseudo-Dionysius’ Ecclesiatical Hierarchy resonate with contemporary psychoanalytic psychotherapy. This study demonstrates that apophatic motifs saturate Jung’s work. It provides a platform for research into apophasis in the wider field of psychoanalysis

C. G. Jung and Hermann Hesse: Art, therapy, and sources of creativity
An intimate relationship of Hermann Hesse to analytical psychology, based on his personal contact with C. G. Jung and his disciple J. B. Lang, belongs to the well-known topics from the history both of literature and of psychotherapy of the past century. The foregoing studies were, however, written in the time when Jung´s pivotal work, The Red Book, was not available to the public. The Book was written as a medieval manuscript where an important role is played not only by words but also by pictures which were painted by Jung himself. In this article I deal with the question how far it is possible to use Hesse´s texts, especially his novel Demian, for better understanding of Jung´s ideas, in particular his approach to images in the framework of the therapeutic process at the time when The Red Book was written. Besides, I will analyze the hypothetical pictorial sources which could have been used by Jung when writing The Red Book. These sources could have been the works of the Beuron school which could be known to Jung either from his own experience or from photos and postcards. The extensive visual culture of the time of the “print capitalism” could supply the visual inspiration both to Jung, and to Hesse. Tracking Virus-Specific CD4+ T Cells during and after Acute Hepatitis C Virus Infection
Background. CD4+ T cell help is critical in maintaining antiviral immune responses and such help has been shown to be sustained in acute resolving hepatitis C. In contrast, in evolving chronic hepatitis C CD4+ T cell helper responses appear to be absent or short-lived, using functional assays. Methodology/Prencipal Findings. Here we used a novel HLA-DR1 tetramer containing a highly targeted CD4+ T cell epitope from the hepatitis C virus non-structural protein 4 to track number and phenotype of hepatitis C virus specific CD4+ T cells in a cohort of seven HLA-DR1 positive patients with acute hepatitis C in comparison to patients with chronic or resolved hepatitis C. We observed peptide-specific T cells in all seven patients with acute hepatitis C regardless of outcome at frequencies up to 0.65% of CD4+ T cells. Among patients who transiently controlled virus replication we observed loss of function, and/or physical deletion of tetramer+ CD4+ T cells before viral recrudescence. In some patients with chronic hepatitis C very low numbers of tetramer+ cells were detectable in peripheral blood, compared to robust responses detected in spontaneous resolvers. Importantly we did not observe escape mutations in this key CD4+ T cell epitope in patients with evolving chronic hepatitis C. Conclusions/Significance. During acute hepatitis C a CD4+ T cell response against this epitope is readily induced in most, if not all, HLA-DR1 + patients. This antiviral T cell population becomes functionally impaired or is deleted early in the course of disease in those where viremia persists

Capsule trigonous, ellipsoid, unilocular, 2.5–3.5 mm long, dark brownish. Habitat, distribution and IUCN Red List category: — Juncus kuohii M.- J. Jung occurs in grassland in a wetland area, where there is full sun, in a ditch on the ridge at high elevation (about 3210 m) of central Taiwan (Fig. 2). This species grows into a dense clump. It occurs with Carex nubigena D. Don (1823: 455) and Primula miyabeana Ito & Kawakamii (1911: 1). Only one population was found, and its distribution is less than 1 km 2. According to the IUCN Red List criteria (IUCN 2001), J. kuohii should be categorized as Critically Endangered (CR). Etymology: —The author dedicates this new Juncus species to Dr. Chang-Sheng Kuoh, the agrostologist and former vice-professor of Department of Life Sciences, National Cheng-Kung University. The specific epithet recognizes his keen interest and substantial contribution to the study of Taiwanese dicotyledonous and monocotyledonous families and his significant role in editing the Flora of Taiwan covering both the native and naturalized flora. Morphological comparison: — Juncus kuohii is similar in appearance to another Juncus species in section Ozophyllum native to northeastern Asia (Japan to Kamschatca Peninsula): J. fauriensis, comprising two subspecies. However, several diagnostic characters separating these three taxa (Table 1) were found after relevant vouchers and literature (Buchenau 1906, Kudo 1922, Kirschner 2002) were examined. Juncus kuohii is more similar to J. fauriensis subsp. kamschatcensis (Buchenau 1906: 159) Novikov (1990: 122) than to subsp. fauriensis, especially in floral characters (Table 1). Following the classification of Kirschner (2002), J. kuohii would be classified under subgenus Juncus section Ozophyllum. (Buchenau) Novikov, and J. kuohii M.-J. Jung. Effect of Slag Composition on Reaction Kinetics of Carbon Composite Agglomerate in the Temperature Range of 1273 K to 1573 K (1000 A degrees C to 1300 A degrees C)
To effectively use high Al2O3 iron ore in carbon composite agglomerate (CCA) reduction process, the effect of slag composition on the isothermal reaction kinetics of CCA was investigated between 1273 K and 1573 K (1000 A degrees C and 1300 A degrees C). Reduction of the particular oxide by CO and gasification reactions of the carbon by CO2 were separately measured by quadruple mass spectrometry gas analysis. To better understand the reaction kinetics, the conventional unimolecular reaction model was modified to get two rate equations for reduction and gasification controls with the reaction thermodynamic driving force incorporated. Based on the gas composition data and modified kinetic model, the rate-controlling steps of CCA at various temperatures and reaction stages were determined. In case, the gasification reaction controls the overall reaction, CaO-Al2O3 Slag increased the reaction rate by accelerating the gasification reaction while CaO-SiO2 Slag decreased the rate by retarding the gasification. As the reduction reaction became dominant in controlling the overall reaction, the addition of slag component had adverse effect on the rate although such effect diminished at higher temperature. Finally, the activation energy values calculated by conventional unimolecular reaction model were compared with those evaluated by modified model. It was found that the gas composition data during the course of reaction and the modified model are of great value in interpreting the reaction kinetics when the controlling reaction is changed over with temperature and reaction time. This study is helpful to understand the theoretical aspects on the usage of high Al2O3-based iron ores for DRI production.1124sciescopu
Typical personal prerequisites for the clients’ problems in psychotherapy and its purpose in the works of K. Jung and C. Rogers from the perspective of an integrative approach
Background. In an earlier article (Kapustin, 2024a), as a result of the analysis of E. Fromm’s works, three basic theoretical provisions were formulated that constitute the basis of the proposed integrative approach to understanding the personal prerequisites of the clients’ problems in psychotherapy and its purpose, which allows for considering the diferent perspectives on these issues contained in the well-known theories of psychotherapy by S. Freud, A. Adler, K. Jung, C. Rogers and V. Frankl from a unifed common position. Te frst of them characterizes the objective property of human life inherent in its very nature, the second one concerns the typical personal prerequisites for the clients’ problems in psychotherapy, and the third one identifes the purpose of psychotherapy itself. Te subsequent publications (Kapustin, 2024b, 2024c), based on the analysis of the theories of S. Freud, A. Adler and V. Frankl, have demonstrated the declared possibilities of the integrative approach.
Objective. To analyze theoretical ideas on the typical personal prerequisites of the clients’ problems in psychotherapy and its purpose contained in the works of K. Jung and
C. Rogers from the position of an integrative approach, demonstrating its capabilities on the basis of these theories.
Results. It is shown that theoretical ideas of the named authors on the typical personal prerequisites of the clients’ problems in psychotherapy and its purpose can be considered as a particular case of the more general basic provisions of the integrative approach.
Conclusions. Ideas of K. Jung and C. Rogers about the typical personal prerequisites for the clients’ problems in psychotherapy and its purpose, despite obvious theoretical diferences, nevertheless allow for considering them from a unifed, common positionset by the three basic provisions of the integrative approach. Tus, on the basis of thesetwo psychotherapeutic theories, the proposed integrative approach obtains a certaintheoretical justifcation for its capabilities
