Shift of the 2009-2011 measles outbreak from children to adults: an observational review at the University Hospital of Clermont-Ferrand, France
In 2009-2011, 113 adult in- and outpatients with measles were referred to the University Hospital of Clermont-Ferrand (centre of France): 71 (62.8 %) needed hospitalisation, 31 had pneumonia, 29 diarrhoea, 47 liver enzymes elevation, 38 thrombopaenia, one encephalitis and there were no deaths. Nineteen cases occurred among healthcare workers and five of them were hospital-acquired. There were 92 unvaccinated patients. The 2011 peak of that measles re-emerging epidemic occurred when non-immunised adults were affected
Short-term effects of airborne pollen content on the risk of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis in Clermont-Ferrand, France, 2000-2001: Airborne pollen content and risk of allergic rhino-conjunctivitis
International audienceAbstractAllergies caused by pollens affect 10 to 15% of the general population. A pilot study was carried out in Clermont-Ferrand (France) over 2000-2001 to analyse the short-term relationship between the daily variations in rhinitis and/or allergic conjunctivitis and the daily variation in pollen counts in the ambient air.ERASME data (French National Health datawarehouse) made it possible to identify all the subjects to whom at least one drug was prescribed to treat a rhinitis or an allergic conjunctivitis. One case of allergic rhino-conjunctivitis (ARC) was defined according to the following criteria: i) was domiciled in the study area, ii) was 5 years old or over and iii) had on a given day, a prescription for an oral antihistamine associated with a local treatment for allergic rhinitis, for allergic conjunctivitis, or for both. Ten allergenic pollens and a pollen control were studied. A Poisson regression model using penalized Spline functions was used.A positive and significant association was found for pollens of Betula, Cupressaceae, Quercus, Fraxinus and Poaceae. The relative risks varied between 1.3 (IC95 % :1.0-1.5) and 1.2 (IC95 % :1.1- 1.5) for an interquartile range increase of daily pollen counts of Cupressaceae (13 grains/m3) and of Betula (45 grains/m3) respectively.Further analyses are necessary to confirm these results, in particular using longer time series of pollen and drug prescription

The French Lexicon Project
The French Lexicon Project (Ferrand, New, Brysbaert, Keuleers, Bonin, Méot, Augustinova, & Pallier, 2010) involved the collection of lexical decision data for 38,840 French words and the same number of nonwords across 1,000 participants from different universities (Université Blaise Pascal, Clermont-Ferrand and Université René Descartes, Paris). It was directly inspired on the English Lexicon Project (Balota, Yap, Cortese, Hutchison, Kessler, Loftis, Neely, Nelson, Simpson, & Treiman, 2007). The data are freely available for research purposes. The French Lexicon Project is funded by the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) and is supervised by Ludovic Ferrand.

Chronolex
Chronolex (Ferrand, Brysbaert, Keuleers, New, Bonin, Méot, Augustinova, & Pallier, 2011) involved the collection of naming, lexical decision and progressive demasking data for 1,826 monosyllabic monomorphemic French words. Thirty-seven participants (psychology students from Blaise Pascal University) were tested in the naming task, 35 additionnal participants in the lexical decision task and 33 additionnal participants (from the same pool) were tested in the progressive demasking task.

Clermont-Ferrand – Projet InspiRe (secteur 2 central)
Grafting luminescent metal-organic species into mesoporous MCM-41 silica from europium(III)tetramethylheptanedionate, Eu(thd)3
Mixed systems with Eu(III) β-diketonates as optically active guest species, and mesoporous silicas MCM-41 as a host matrix have been investigated. The grafting of europium(III) onto the inner walls of unmodified MCM-41 has been achieved starting from Eu(thd)3 (thd = 2,2,6,6- tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionate), using two routes: wet impregnation (WI) at room temperature, and chemical vapour infiltration (CVI) at 185 °C. In received hybrids, denoted Eu(thd)x@MCM- 41, the same maximum yield [Eu]/[Si] = 8.2 at% on average has been achieved with either methods. The molar ratio x = [thd]/[Eu] is 0.6 on average for WI samples, and 1.5 for CVI samples. In the latter, higher contents in thd compensate lower contents in silanols with respect to the former. Rationalizing the possible bonds exchanged at the silica surface leads to a great diversity of possible co-ordination schemes according to the expression Σ[Si(OH)nx (O)xEu(thd)3-x] (where Σ means that surface species are considered). Chromophore neutral ligands phenanthroline (phen) or bipyridine (bipy) have been added to induce efficient Eu3+ luminescence under 270–280 nm excitation, via the antenna effect. For the most favourable case, (phen)yEu(thd)x@MCM-41, the emission intensity at 612 nm under excitation at 270 nm is 2/3 that for the genuine heteroleptic complex Eu(thd)3(phen). Moreover the hybrid material is stable up to 440 °C
