Opowiadanie kryminalne Anzelma Feuerbacha Andreas Bichel, Der M¨adchenschl¨achter
Anzelm [Paul Johann Anselm] Feuerbach (1775–1833), the founder of the theory of psychological compulsion (Theorie des psychologischen Zwanges), was also famous as an author of criminal stories. In 1827 he published a book titled Aktenmäßige Darstellung merwürdigen Verbrechen, which contained more than 30 stories based on criminal cases involving manslaughter. One of these stories, with the original title Andreas Bichel, der Mädchenschlächter (Andreas Bichel, the slaughterer of girls), presents the history of a notorious murderer of young women. The motive of his acts was basically robbery. Law, especially legal proceedings, plays an important role in this story.Anzelm [Paul Johann Anselm] Feuerbach (1775–1833), the founder of the theory of psychological compulsion (Theorie des psychologischen Zwanges), was also famous as an author of criminal stories. Three-Dimensional Investigation of a 5 m Deflected Swale along the San Andreas Fault in the Carrizo Plain
abstract: Topographic maps produced from Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data are useful for paleoseismic and neotectonic research because they pro- vide submeter representation of faulting-related surface features. Offset measurements of geomorphic features, made in the field or on a remotely sensed imagery, commonly assume a straight or smooth (i.e., undeflected) pre-earthquake geometry. Here, we present results from investigation of an ∼20 cm deep and >5 m wide swale with a sharp bend along the San Andreas fault (SAF) at the Bidart fan site in the Carrizo Plain, California. From analysis of LiDAR topography images and field measure- ments, the swale was initially interpreted as a channel tectonically offset ∼4:7 m. Our observations from exposures in four backhoe excavations and 25 hand-dug trenchettes show that even though a sharp bend in the swale coincides with the trace of the A.D. 1857 fault rupture, the swale formed after the 1857 earthquake and was not tectonically offset. Subtle fractures observed within a surficial gravel unit overlying the 1857 rupture trace are similar to fractures previously documented at the Phelan fan and LY4 paleoseismic sites 3 and 35 km northwest of Bidart fan, respectively. Collectively, the fractures suggest that a post-1857 moderate-magnitude earthquake caused ground cracking in the Carrizo and Cholame stretches of the SAF. Our obser- vations emphasize the importance of excavation at key locations to validate remote and ground-based measurements, and we advocate more geomorphic characterization for each site if excavation is not possible
The teachings of Claudius Galen and Andreas Vesalius. comparative analysis
The article analyzes the teachings of Andreas Vesalius and Claudius Galen, their contribution to the development of medicine. The author shows not just a criticism of the teachings of Galen by Vesalius, but the progress that medicine has achieved over the centuries separating the two scientists.В статье дается анализ учений Андреаса Везалия и Клавдия Галена, их вклада в развитие медицины. Автор показывает не просто критику учений Галена Везалием, а тот прогресс, которого достигла медицина за столетия, разделяющие двух ученых
Linguocultural features of the novel Volga, Volga and The Beautiful Women by Russian-German writer Andreas Keller
The article is dedicated to the novel «Volga, Vodka and the Beautiful Women» (2011) by the Russian-German author Andreas Keller. Some fundamental problems of sociolinguistics and cultural studies are examined. The research deals with the problems of self-identity, the interaction between two different cultures, as well as the questions of cooperation between the author and the publisher in the context of the editorial preparation of the novel on the Russian-German topic.
Porous Becomings:Anthropological Engagements with Michel Serres
One of the foremost intellectuals of his generation, French philosopher of science Michel Serres (1930–2019) broke free from disciplinary dogmas. His reflections on science, culture, technology, art, and religion have proved foundational to scholars across the humanities. The contributors to Porous Becomings bring the inspirational and enigmatic world of Serres to the attention of anthropology. Through ethnographic encounters as diverse as angels and religious conversion in Ethiopia, the percolation of war in Bosnia, and incarcerated bodies crossing the Atlantic, the contributors showcase how Serres’s interrogation of the fundamentals of human existence opens new pathways for anthropological knowledge. Proposing the notion of "porosity" to characterize permeability across boundaries of time, space, literary genre, and academic discipline, they draw on Serres to map the constellations that connect humans, time, technology, and planet Earth. The volume concludes with a conversation between the editors and Vibrant Matter author Jane Bennett.Contributors. Andreas Bandak, Jane Bennett, Tom Boylston, Steven D. It's the market power, stupid! Stock return patterns in international bank M&A
This paper analyzes capital market reactions to international bank M&A. We investigate combined stock return patterns of targets, bidders, and their peers upon takeover announcement, and closing or withdrawal. We distinguish five common M&A hypotheses and relate characteristic and mutually exclusive abnormal stock return patterns to each hypothesis. We find that investors believe in gains through the exploitation of market power by the post-merger entity. In a multinomial logistic model we show that patterns related to market power significantly concur with large relative target size, intra-industry mergers, and increasing market concentration, suggesting a substantial lessening of competition through M&A. --M&A,Banks,Event Study,Peer Returns,Market Power
Duty of Care of the EU and Its Member States towards Their Personnel Deployed in International Missions
In this article, the author examines the current interpretation of the “duty of care” and the obligation to protect life in the international legal system. He defines the precise obligations of EU and its Member States at this regard, points out what has been done so far to implement them and highlights the potential consequences of violating these obligations. As most of the problems associated with the notion of the “duty of care” are similar both for EU and its Member States, and as they are intrinsically connected and sometimes difficult to address
separately, this investigation will take into account both situations
Some Byzantine / Greek Influences on the Early Work of the Anatomist Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564)
500 years after the birth of Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564) it is appropriate to commemorate this first modern anatomist, doctor, scholar, and author. Different from other Vesalius-commemorations, however, we like to examine what - until the 16th century - did happen to the knowledge of anatomy as described by Galen (130-210) whose apparent “faults” were so effectively corrected by Vesalius. The intention of Andreas Vesalius - possibly after the authoritative Iranian physician and writer Rhazes (854-925 CE) - to correct Galen’s mistakes, may have been helped greatly by his initial contacts with the original Byzantine / Greek texts of Galen that had been translated by Alessandro Benedetti (1450-1512), professor of Anatomy and Surgery at the University of Padua, during his medical practice on the Greek island of Crete. This may also serve as an example of early East-West cooperation.Endorsed by: Saint-Petersburg State University,2014; Saint-Petersburg State Polytechnic University, 2014; © Varzin S.A., Diodorova T.I., 201
