"It still recognises race" Politics of marriage and challenge of social cohesion among South Africa undergraduates
South Africa is a country plagued by several racial challenges in almost all spheres of its activities. While, in recent years, the South Africa government have initiated programs aimed at promoting social cohesion, not much has been done in the area of interracial marriage. Yet intermarriage has been regarded as both a final test of integration and willingness of a person to lose his/her racial identification. Although some people contended that with the end of apartheid two decades ago, South Africa youth endogamy or marriage based on should be a thing of the past, studies to either confirm or refute this contention are scanty. This study, therefore, was an attempt to assess the attitudes of South Africa undergraduate students towards inter-racial marriage. The study indicated that racial endogamy is still common in South Africa, furthermore that few students are more likely to approve of the interracial marriage and the youths exhibited a conservative attitude toward interracial marriage. The study recommended that Inter-racial marriage by students and youths should be encouraged as it would likely foster social cohesion and invigorate and promote peaceful co-existence and encourage the much needed social cohesion among the people of South Africa
Cultural concepts employed in child discipline within rural Yoruba households: the Ayetoro-Oke African community
Social scientists have long been concerned about social control, not only of adults, but also of children. In recent years, however, concerns have escalated globally, particularly regarding the lack of integration of indigenous knowledge about many aspects of children's upbringing. The present research addresses knowledge gaps around aspects of the Yorùbá culture employed in rural African communities to ensure child discipline, and consequently social control among all members. Employing a descriptive case study research design, we describe the cultural concepts employed as instruments of child discipline within households in the Ayetoro-Oke community of Oyo state. Using 6 focus group discussions involving 45 persons across the community, we identify and describe 7 cultural elements employed in child training within the households in the rural community, ranging from "Ijiya" (punishment) to "Orin" (songs). The article concludes shaming is a key element upon which such cultural concepts are built and guides child discipline among the people of Ayetoro-Oke. It also notes differences between traditional discipline and western child-rearing practices may lead to potential conflict in attempting to integrate the indigenous with the modern. It concludes by suggesting the use of indigenous knowledge in developing parts of societal life is warranted, and based on the findings, recommends areas requiring future research
Conocimiento, Actitud y Percepción de los Estudiantes sobre el Uso de ChatGPT en la Universidad de Ibadan, Nigeria
ChatGPT has acquired a global audience due to its widespread integration into educational practices and the rapid advancement of technology, particularly in the innovative artificial intelligence tool. Hence, a growing need exists to understand how students interact with and perceive such writing tools within the academic landscape. This study aims to provide valuable insights into integrating AI technologies into higher education. The study used a mixed-method approach guided by the social constructivism theory. Through the multi-stage sampling, 402 students were selected for quantitative analysis, while qualitative insights were gathered through ten (10) In-depth interviews with the University academics. Quantitative data was analysed using descriptive statistics and the Independence Sample T-test in IBM-SPSS Version 23. Qualitative data underwent thematic and content analysis. The study findings indicate a high level of awareness among students on ChatGPT, with most obtaining knowledge about the tool from recommendations by friends and colleagues. Despite its high level of awareness among students, the study found that some academics reported a lack of familiarity with ChatGPT. Based on the findings, several recommendations are proposed, which include organising seminars on technology, specifically AI, for lecturers and students and integrating them into the curriculum to create awareness.ChatGPT ha adquirido una audiencia global debido a su amplia integración en las prácticas educativas y el rápido avance de la tecnología, particularmente en la innovadora herramienta de inteligencia artificial. Este estudio tiene como objetivo proporcionar información valiosa sobre la integración de las tecnologías de IA en la educación superior. El estudio utilizó un enfoque de método mixto guiado por la teoría del constructivismo social. A través del muestreo de múltiples etapas, se seleccionaron 402 estudiantes para el análisis cuantitativo, mientras que los conocimientos cualitativos se recopilaron a través de diez (10) entrevistas en profundidad con los académicos de la Universidad. Los datos cuantitativos se analizaron utilizando estadísticas descriptivas y la prueba T de muestra independiente en IBM-SPSS versión 23. Los datos cualitativos se sometieron a análisis temático y de contenido. Los hallazgos del estudio indican un alto nivel de conocimiento entre los estudiantes sobre ChatGPT, y la mayoría obtuvo conocimiento sobre la herramienta a partir de recomendaciones de amigos y colegas. A pesar de su alto nivel de conocimiento entre los estudiantes, el estudio encontró que algunos académicos informaron una falta de familiaridad con ChatGPT
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
