Alice Miel and Democratic Schooling: An Early Curriculum Leader\u27s Ideas on Social Learning and Social Studies
Alice Miel, a nationally prominent curriculum development scholar-practitioner at Teachers College of Columbia University for some three decades (1942-1971), frequently has been overlooked in research on the nature and evolution of the curriculum field and the progressive education movement. Furthermore, her contributions have been overlooked even as attention to women in the curriculum field and in educational history has risen. This study addresses this oversight.
Miel became a leading figure in the curriculum field largely on the basis of her progressive-era advocacy and practice of democratic social learning as a primary goal of schooling in the United States. This study explores major influences on her ideas, her understandings of democratic concepts and principles, and her application of these concepts and principles both in her own college classroom and in her research on childhood education. It also explores Miel\u27s notions of the elementary school social studies :urriculum and situates those notions within the context of the conventional wisdom of her day regarding a discipline-centered curriculum.
In a broader context, this study contributes to the body of curriculum history scholarship. According to Kliebard (1992), for example, curriculum history often deals with the relationship between social change and changing ideas and contains significant social and cultural artifacts of knowledge that have become embodied in the curriculum of schools. Davis (1976, 1977) characterizes curriculum history as a reflective enterprise for curriculum workers that contributes to their understanding of present courses of study and of the professional field by lending a framework for thoughtful deliberation of what the schools should teach. With these observations in mind, Miel\u27s work may be understood as both artifact of curriculum history and as mindful reflection, situated within a particular social and historical context, on democratic meanings and processes. Biographies of Caswell, Taba, Tyler, Schwab, Kilpatrick, Rugg, Bobbitt, Zirbes, Stratemeyer, and others have yielded significant insights. In addition, Seguel\u27s study of early curriculum leaders (1966) constitutes an important theoretical contribution to the field. The study of Miel\u27s life and work adds to this body of knowledge
John Tenniel\u27s Alice in wonderland illustrations and the creation of a wordless picture book for adults
Magistrska naloga z naslovom "Ilustracije Johna Tenniela Alica v čudežni deželi ter izdelava slikanice brez besedila za odrasle" je sestavljena iz dveh delov. V prvem, tj. teoretičnem delu bomo s pomočjo literature in internetnih virov predstavili značilnosti slikanice brez besedila, avtorja romana Alice v čudežni deželi Lewisa Carrolla in avtorja ilustracij Sir Johna Tenniela. The Master\u27s thesis titled "John Tenniel\u27s Alice in Wonderland illustrations and the creation of a wordless picture book for adults" consists of two parts. In the first, i.e. theoretical part, we will, with the help of literature and internet sources, present the characteristics of wordless picture book, the author of the novel Alice in Wonderland Lewis Carroll and the author of illustrations Sir John Tenniel. Considering that the thesis is based on the analysis of illustrations of Alice in Wonderland, we will describe the idea behind their creation, the drawing and printing technique and their meanings and symbols. In the second, i.e. practical part, we will create a wordless picture book for adults
Being Alice in Japan: performing a cute, 'girlish' revolt
There is a certain curiosity inscribed to the character Alice of Lewis Carroll's famous children's books. Perhaps reflecting the 'enigmatic' sexuality of the author, Alice herself has been perceived and interpreted in a dualistic way, namely as an innocent child and as a self-assertively sexualized 'Lolita'. However, Alice can also be perceived as an emotionally flat yet autonomous character. My article explores this reading of the heroine, which is notable in the context of Japanese culture. In aspects of contemporary Japanese popular culture, for instance, the idea of 'Alice' embodies the idealised image of the 'shojo' (girl), who is situated between child and adult and is largely detached from the heterosexual economy. Paying particular attention to a group of music videos in which female Japanese pop singers offer their own versions of Carroll's heroine, I examine significant meanings that lie in Japanese appropriations of the imagery of Alice. The importance of their performances as Alice is highlighted by the tendency in which the aesthetic concept of kawaii (cuteness), particularly when it is mingled with sweet, girlish, and 'infantile' qualities, is deemed as unfavourable and demeaning in Euro-American cultures. Do their performances of Alice demonstrate a compatibility between girlish aesthetics and senses of agency and autonomy? Can their emphasis on sweetness, demureness, and femininity without hinting at sexual allure or seeking the male gaze serve to repudiate the stereotyped representation of femininity as passive, compliant, and powerless and prevent the sexual objectification of women?. © 2014 BAJS
Alice in the land of animated forms
This work is born from memories, adventures, (re)discoveries in the personal, educational and professional spheres. Reflections and empirical experiences in formal and non-formal environments as an artist-educator, on a journey from learning to teaching. This work will contribute to the reflection on theater, animated forms theater and art education, concomitantly with the importance of sociocultural projects. In basic education, little known as content and artistic experimentation, in the quest to increase knowledge and experience. Thus, it reflects whether the Theater of Animated Forms includes the teaching and learning of theatrical language with a view to promoting this education aimed at the perspective of artistic expression as a way of dialoguing with the world. It emphasizes a process of transition and continuation, where there is a search for a conscious identity reality in learning in various contexts, a teaching-learning process in constant construction with the understanding of training. Dialogues with authors who deal with points in common, such as: Ana Maria Amaral, Ana Mae Barbosa, Augusto Boal, Duarte Júnior, Paulo Freire, Roque de Barros Laraia, among others. In its development, the method took a qualitative form. A phenomenological understanding of these experiences that depart for a performative writing tracing an idea of the author, a pun on the name of the author and the protagonist of the work “Wonderland”, Alice. In summary, reflect on the Animated Forms Theater as a methodology for teaching and learning theatrical language for basic education in Amazonas, as a form of knowledge, experiences and experimentation.
Conceptual design of an ALICE Tier-2 centre integrated into a multi-purpose computing facility
This thesis discusses the issues and challenges associated with the design and operation of a data analysis facility for a high-energy physics experiment at a multi-purpose computing centre. At the spotlight is a Tier-2 centre of the distributed computing model of the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. The design steps, examined in the thesis, include analysis and optimization of the I/O access patterns of the user workload, integration of the storage resources, and development of the techniques for effective system administration and operation of the facility in a shared computing environment. A number of I/O access performance issues on multiple levels of the I/O subsystem, introduced by utilization of hard disks for data storage, have been addressed by the means of exhaustive benchmarking and thorough analysis of the I/O of the user applications in the ALICE software framework. Defining the set of requirements to the storage system, describing the potential performance bottlenecks and single points of failure and examining possible ways to avoid them allows one to develop guidelines for selecting the way how to integrate the storage resources. The solution, how to preserve a specific software stack for the experiment in a shared environment, is presented along with its effects on the user workload performance. The proposal for a flexible model to deploy and operate the ALICE Tier-2 infrastructure and applications in a virtual environment through adoption of the cloud computing technology and the 'Infrastructure as Code' concept completes the thesis. Scientific software applications can be efficiently computed in a virtual environment, and there is an urgent need to adapt the infrastructure for effective usage of cloud resources
Inquiry-based learning templates for creating online educational paths
Walden's Paths, created by the Center for the Study of Digital Libraries, provides
a mechanism for leveraging student learning with the incredible amount of educational
material on the web by organizing selected web pages into a structured learning activity.
Applying specialized templates to the creation of Walden's Paths can aid a path author in
creating pedagogically sound, Web-based activities, by assisting in the collection of
information and organization of the activity. Authoring templates may be based on
established educational frameworks, learning theories or specific activity type. This
research project investigates how using pedagogically based templates affects the
authoring process for paths created using Walden's Paths. A template based on the
educational framework Inquiry-Based Learning was created and tested by a group of
users to determine what effects the template has on creating paths as compared to
creating similar paths using the existing Walden's Paths interface
ALPIDE, the Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor for the ALICE ITS upgrade
AbstractA new 10m2 inner tracking system based on seven concentric layers of Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors will be installed in the ALICE experiment during the second long shutdown of LHC in 2019–2020. The monolithic pixel sensors will be fabricated in the 180nm CMOS Imaging Sensor process of TowerJazz. The ALPIDE design takes full advantage of a particular process feature, the deep p-well, which allows for full CMOS circuitry within the pixel matrix, while at the same time retaining the full charge collection efficiency. Together with the small feature size and the availability of six metal layers, this allowed a continuously active low-power front-end to be placed into each pixel and an in-matrix sparsification circuit to be used that sends only the addresses of hit pixels to the periphery. This approach led to a power consumption of less than 40mWcm−2, a spatial resolution of around 5μm, a peaking time of around 2μs, while being radiation hard to some 10131MeVneq/cm2, fulfilling or exceeding the ALICE requirements.Over the last years of R & D, several prototype circuits have been used to verify radiation hardness, and to optimize pixel geometry and in-pixel front-end circuitry. The positive results led to a submission of full-scale (3cm×1.5cm) sensor prototypes in 2014. They are being characterized in a comprehensive campaign that also involves several irradiation and beam tests. A summary of the results obtained and prospects towards the final sensor to instrument the ALICE Inner Tracking System are given
Measuring KS0K± interactions using Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN=2.76 TeV
We present the first ever measurements of femtoscopic correlations between the K-S(0) and K-+/- particles. The analysis was performed on the data from Pb-Pb collisions at root S-NN = 2.76 TeV measured by the ALICE experiment. The observed femtoscopic correlations are consistent with final-state interactions proceeding via the a(0)(980) resonance. The extracted kaon source radius and correlation strength parameters for (KSK-)-K-0 are found to be equal within the experimental uncertainties to those for (KSK+)-K-0. Comparing the results of the present study with those from published identical-kaon femtoscopic studies by ALICE, mass and coupling parameters for the a(0) resonance are tested. Our results are also compatible with the interpretation of the a(0) having a tetraquark structure instead of that of a diquark. (c) 2017 The Author. Published by Elsevier B.V.Peer reviewe

Alice Munro’s short fiction writing
This issue of Revue Etudes Canadiennes/ Canadian Studies, (n°77) is devoted to Alice Munro’s short fiction writing and particularly to her first set of short-stories Dance of the Happy Shades. It is dedicated to a Canadian author who is not a household name in France. Alice Munro received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2013. This was a first for a Canadian author, leading observers to wonder if Canadian literature might be less « international » than other literatures in English. Taking into account some « renewed » interest in Canadian literature, in France and in Europe, we encouraged contributors to think along two lines. First we wondered how Canadian, Munro’s writing was indeed (either in form or content), looking principally at her début story collection, Dance of the Happy Shades. Second of all, we invited academics to consider if Canadian literature in English was « less visible » than other English-speaking literatures in our university curricala. The Revue is composed of a series of remarkable papers on Munro’s prose, style and motifs. All of them renew the traditional readings of Munro’s short fiction writing, particularly thanks to their original close-reading of her texts
