Bronchogenic cyst mimicking an adrenal mass in the retroperitoneal region: Report of a rare case

    No full text
We report the surgical excision of a retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst that presented as a nonfunctioning left adrenal mass in a 25-year-old woman with continuous pain in the left flank. Preoperative biochemical testing confirmed that the mass was nonfunctional. Bronchogenic cysts are mostly benign congenital abnormalities that originate from the remnants of the primitive foregut and typically occur in the lung. Subdiaphragmatic and especially, retroperitoneal locations are rare. Despite the rarity of this pathologic entity, bronchogenic cysts should be considered in the differential diagnosis of retroperitoneal cystic lesions. Diagnosis must be definitively confirmed by histology

Conventional osteosarcoma of the rib: a case report

    No full text
Primary tumors of the rib are relatively uncommon in adults and rare in children. In this article, we present a case who was operated due to conventional osteosarcoma of the rib in the light of the literature review. A 17-year-old female patient had been operated due to a rib tumor 54 months ago. There was no local recurrence or metastatic disease. Chest wall tumors, particularly those arising from bones, require histologic assessment to be considered benign; the differential diagnosis of malignant neoplasms should not be based on clinical and radiographic features, only

Analysis of Ki-67 Immunoreactivity in Recurring and Nonrecurring Nasal Polyps

    No full text
Objective: Nasal polyps are common, abnormal lesions. Recurrence of the nasal polyposis is prevalent and a severe problem. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between Ki-67 immunoreactivity and the risk of recurrence of nasal polyps. Ki-67 staining of polypectomy material was tested as a risk factor for recurrence independent of etiologic factors or treatment modalities

Promoting Teaching Academic Writing Among German Teacher Candidates in Turkey in the Sample of Abstract Text Writing - An Action Research

    No full text
The processing of the information read is a big challenge for the students. The abstract text takes an important function to overcome this challenge. This is because the abstract text mediates the transformation of expert knowledge into individual information in the way of reproducing the text. Thus, the summarization is one of the main achievements of German teacher candidates and has impact not only on their success in university, but also on their future working lives. The aim of this study is to develop a model for writing an abstract text for the students in the Department of German Language Teaching and to represent the results in relation with this model. For this purpose, an action research based on written questionnaire and using quantitative data collection tools has been carried out. The sample group of the study consists of 22 2nd grade students in total attending the Department of German Language Teaching at Marmara University. After the model has been applied for a 6-week period, a written questionnaire about the texts used in the model, the teaching method, the activities used in the model, the proceedings obtained through the model and the general results related to the model aiming to write an abstract text has been conducted with the students during evaluation stage. According to the data regarding to the self-assessments of the students, thanks to the model about teaching how to write a academic text in the sample of abstract text writing, the students have made progress in expressing the author's action, specifying the argumentative structure, connecting the sentences and using appropriate conjunctions

Aim: The purpose of this study is to compare the first- and fourth-year nursing students in terms of their knowledge on methods for preventing infectious diseases. Material and Methods: While the population of the study was composed of 143 students studying in the first and fourth years of the Nursing Department in Bingol University Faculty of Health Sciences, the sample of the study consisted of 117 students who supported the implementation of the study and were voluntary to participate in the study (Response rate: 81.8%).Results: When the responses of the first and fourth-year students were compared in 3 of the items given about the definition and characteristics of infectious diseases, the difference between them was found to be significant (p0.05). When the answers of the first- and fourth-year students were compared in 5 of the 6 items given about sexually transmitted infections. The difference between them was found to be significant (p0.05). In all items, the percentage of giving correct answer was higher in fourth-year students compared to the first-year students. Conclusions: It was observed in the present study that general knowledge levels of the nursing students about infectious diseases and their knowledge levels about Sexually Transmitted Infections were not sufficient. When the knowledge levels of the first-year students were compared with those of the senior students, it was determined that the knowledge levels increased with education, but it was still not sufficient

Nonfunctional Pelvic Retroperitoneal Paraganglioma Mimicking Postmenopausal Adnexal Mass

    No full text
Paraganglioma is a rare tumor originates from paraganglial tissue which is composed of extraadrenal chromaffin cells. The pelvic and retroperitoneal location of this tumor is extremely rare and it can mimic adnexal mass. The diagnosis of paraganglioma in this region is difficult. The exact diagnosis may only be reached after the total excision and histopathologic examination of the tumor. In this report, for the first time, we presented a postmenopausal woman who had nonfunctional retroperitoneal paraganglioma mimicking postmenopausal adnexal mass. This case emphasizes that extraadrenal paraganglioma should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis in all patients including postmenopausal woman with retroperitoneal mass even in the presence of nonspecific symptoms like abdominal pain

Multiple Lung Metastases From Parotid Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma with Respiratory Failure

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is one of the most common malig-nancy in secretory glands. It accounts for about 15% -25% of all malignant salivary gland carcinomas. Typically, ACC is slow growing tumors and develops distant metastasis via haematogenous. We report a case who presented with respiratory failure and multiple metastases. A 52-year-old male, underwent a radical craniofacial resection for a right parotid gland, followed by postoperative radiotherapy. He was followed-up with head CT scans for 5 years with no signs of locoregional recurrence. Physical examination was normal. Blood gases analyses showed moderate hypoxemia. pH; 7,49 pCO2; 31,8 Po2; 38,9 HCO3; 24,1 sat O2; 79,1. Thorax CT showed multiple lesions ranging in size from 5 mm to 4 cm distributed diffusely in both lungs. CT-guided fine-needle aspiration of the lung lesion was performed. Pathological analysis reported adenoid cystic carcinoma. Multiple pulmonary metastases may cause respiratory failure and requires constant vigilance by medical practitioners
