    ANALYSIS OF CONNECTION TYPES AND THE USES OF DEBATES IN LEARNING

    This paper explores the syntactic and semantics of discourse connectives typically produced in a competitive setting. The discourse was produced by 98 students comprising 12 secondary schools. Coherence in discourse can be achieved by different mechanisms at play: morphological, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic. Morphologically, tense, for instance, helps to mark temporal relations, guiding the reader in the interpretation of progressions or flashbacks in time. One syntactic mechanism is sentence mood (indicative, imperative and interrogative). Mood is a structural marker of pragmatic meaning. Semantically, verb meaning can point to certain relations, cause, trigger, provoke, or effect which can all indicate a cause relation. Pragmatically, phenomenon such implicature establishes propositions that are not explicitly present in the text, but are constructed in the minds of the speakers. The aim was to unveil through analysis whether discourse uttered under this environment could be disorienting. Contrary from the expectation, the result indicated connectives worked on different levels which provided tacit and coherent interactions

    Perkhidmatan komunikasi tanpa wayar telah berkembang pesat dengan matlamat untukmemenuhi permintaan yang semakin meningkat. Isu keselamatan rangkaian tanpa wayar telah menjadi topik perbualan hangat dengan adanya ancaman dan serangan yang muncul saban hari. Keperluan terhadap tenaga mahir dalam bidang keselamatan rangkaian tanpa wayar perlu di tingkatkan bagi menampung permintaan organisasi. Institusi pendidikan tinggi perlu melahirkan graduan yang kompeten dalam bidang terbabit. Politeknik Kuala Terengganu telah bekerjasama dengan pihak industri bagi melatih pelajar mengurus isu keselamatan rangkaian tanpa wayar. Kajian yang dijalankan berbentuk deskriptif untuk mengenalpasti impak dan cabaran yang dihadapi oleh pelajar setelah mengharungi pembelajaran keselamatan tanpa wayar melalui kolaborasi bersama industri. Sampel bagi kajian ini terdiri dari 43 orang pelajar semester dua, program Diploma Teknologi Maklumat (Teknologi Digital) yang telah melalui program pembelajaran keselamatan rangkaian tanpa wayar bersama pihak industri. Instrumen bagi kajian ini terdiri dari borang soal selidik yang digunakan untuk mengenalpasti impak dan cabaran pembelajaran keselamatan rangkaian tanpa wayar melalui kolaborasi bersama industri. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan terdapat enam impak yang dicapai apabila melaksanakan aktiviti pembelajaran keselamatan rangkaian tanpa wayar bersama pihak industri. Kefahaman pelajar terhadap teknik ancaman dan serangan semakin meningkat dan mereka juga berupaya mengurangkan kelemahan keselamatan yang terdapat dalam rangkaian tanpa wayar. Pelajar dapat memahami peranan protokol penyulitan dan kepentingannya serta melaksanakan konfigurasi terhadap rangkaian tanpa wayar agar lebih selamat. Mereka juga mempunyai keyakinan yang tinggi dalam menguruskan keselamatan rangkaian tanpa wayar dan mengaplikasikan konsep dan teknik yang dipelajari.     This paper focused on university debate genre. The data for the paper was derived from world university debate championship. It involved recording of the corpora which were transcribed into written form. The corpora were usually characterized by a huge number of sentences which were disfluent. The elements which made a sentence not fluent were commonly referred to as ‘disfluencies’. Repetition of words uttered previously, complete corrections or restarts of sentences were some of the common features of students’ debate genre. When a speaker deleted elements considered to be disfluent in a given speech situation, s/he was left with only the intended meaning representations which could be considered clean. While some disfluencies were intentional while others were habitual, yet, others were side effects of anxiety, inadequate vocabularies, inefficient discourse knowledge, etc. The research revealed world University students’ debate championships were characterized by three major types of disfluencies: pause/fillers, repeats, and self – corrections. Statistics indicated that long unlexicalized pause a:m has a highest and it was attributed to unfamiliarity with some debate topics, due to short notice issued to participants prior to commencement of the tournament, hence they lacked right lexicons to use

    Abstract: Schools and even difficult terrains can be used for structured argumentation for children of different socioethnic backgrounds. Debate educated the children about values of tolerance in a more practical way by organizing a competition outside classroom. Similarly, the debate taught the participants different pedagogies to promote cultural tolerance among children which include, human rights, encouragement of the participants to express their views and feelings regarding all issues without feeling restricted. Similarly, the debate exposed the children to discussing issues with their fellow age mates unrestrictedly in an open environment which is less boredom compared to classroom. Regardless of medium of deliverance, peace education as the kind in this paper provided the learner with much skills of understanding how other people think, behave and respond to situations even if they are unfavorable. Similarly, the type exercise provided in this paper offered unique opportunities for both participants and non participants alike to live in harmony with people unconditionally

    O objetivo deste trabalho é realizar um estudo comparativo entre as obras O parque das irmãs magníficas, da argentina Camila Sosa Villada, e E se eu fosse puta, da brasileira Amara Moira. Para tanto, metodologicamente, o estudo se baseará em entrevistas das autoras, outras obras literárias e artigos de jornais e revistas por elas produzidos e escritos de pensadoras/ativistas travestis, como Lohana Berkins e Marlene Wayar, na teoria queer e nas postulações da decolonialidade. As autoras, que se identificam como travestis, constroem duas narrativas literárias autoficcionais em que há uma junção habilidosa de ficção e realidade. Ali há histórias que são contadas por sujeitas que historicamente se viram excluídas da sociedade somente por serem quem são. Trata-se de escritas de quem não aceita mais ser silenciada, de quem quer falar por si mesma, gestos políticos de resistência e memória, que nos convidam a pensar sobre questões sociais e políticas em relação às travestis, assim como sobre novos modos do fazer literário a partir de novas sujeitas e olhares.The objective of this work is to conduct a comparative study between the works O parque das irmãs magníficas, by Argentine author Camila Sosa Villada, and E se eu fosse puta, by Brazilian author Amara Moira. Methodologically, the study will be based on interviews with the authors, their other literary works, as well as newspaper and magazine articles they have produced and writings by trans activists and thinkers such as Lohana Berkins and Marlene Wayar, queer theory, and decolonial postulations. The authors, who identify as travestis (a Latin American gender identity), construct two autofictional literary narratives that skillfully blend fiction and reality. These stories are told by individuals who have historically been excluded from society simply for being who they are. These writings are from those who no longer accept being silenced, who want to speak for themselves, and are political gestures of resistance and memory. They invite us to reflect on social and political issues concerning travestis, as well as on new modes of literary creation from new subjects and perspectives
