Between a homestead and a football pitch. The study of activity of rural sports clubs
For the last 25 years, rural sport and cultural phenomena hasn’t been a subject of a sociological studies in Poland. This research project is (according to the author's knowledge) the first realized on the example of sports organizations, which work in the Polish rural areas, after '89. Nowadays amateur sports clubs make up one of the biggest subjects’ category of the third sector (except for Voluntary Fire Brigades) represented in Polish countryside. Having their urban counterparts they are functioning in the supralocal chains, and are prolifically financed from the public resources, which can be taken as a ‘nonclassicall’ rural NGO. Until now the activities of amateur sports organizations (despite their large number and considerable funds at their disposal) was treated as a form of activity purely hobby, an irrelevant for the development of civil society.
The aim of this disertation was to describe the main problems that this type of sports companies are facing as well as the successful ways of dealing with them while generating new and using the present resources (financial and nonfinancial ones) in the rural environments. Results of the conducted study confirm that amateur football clubs can generating, adapting, using and existing resources of social capital in rural reality in Poland, which is currently undergoing a dynamic transformation. The analyze the strategies being undertaken to enable effective action in communities with low level of social capital allowed identify mechanisms for strengthening existing and generate new social resources in rural communities (especially where the non-governmental organizations are young). It is a potential that can support endogenous development and innovation in local communities in Polish countryside.
An additional objective of this study was to gain information about the functions carried out by the amateur sports clubs in rural communities and about content of the culture which there produce and adapt. This way a small amount of knowledge about the social world of rural sportsmen and the contemporary perception of the phenomenon of sport by Polish countryside’s residents were enriched. According to the results of research, clubs participate in the proces of bonding local community and co-create their identity (especially where there are no other institutions of public life). Also we can say that cultural phenomena of football (like the versatile football values, attitudes and patterns of fans' behaviour) have found a niche in the cultural space of the Polish countryside and there they evolve, becoming an emanation of glocalism. In this context, the use of football fans to the revitalization of local culture seems to be possible and expected

On the so-called patriarchy in the Polish countryside
‘Patriarchy’ is one of many terms frequently applied in the studies of the Polish countryside (its culture and people’s mentality). Perceived as self-evident, the notion hardly ever comes with an in-depth justification for its use. At the same time, ethnographic literature, classical rural sociology, diary materials, monographs, and linguistic data offer no evidence to support the claim about patriarchy in rural areas. While Polish society, part of which was rural, and the attitude of the Church as a rule could be described as patriarchal, rural communities developed mechanisms and customs that contradicted this general profile. Based on a review of arguments from various sources, the author draws a different conclusion and proposes its justification. As suggested by contemporary humanities and, more broadly, social sciences, dichotomous categories may hinder the theoretical analysis of reality, making a search for new, less dualistic but more adequate, concepts necessary. In view of the above, the term ‘patriarchy’ should not be used unquestioningly as a strictly ideological epithet
Culture: Meanings and Values or a Multisensory Orgy?
The article presents a unusual take on the subject of culture not from the point of view its internal, abstract, immeasurable, yet accessible to cognition content, but from the point of view of its vehicles, or artifacts. The author of the text placed language among the most important external manifestations of culture and focused on how the relationship between language and culture works in practice. The article is divided into three parts, each focused on a different aspect of this relationship. The first one presents a series of theories on meaning and the material and immaterial manifestations of culture as discussed in the humanities. The second one is devoted to physical and corporeal meanings of language. The author presents observations in the field of semiotics which were initiated in the classical era and experimentally confirmed in twentieth-century studies. The third part of the article focuses on the issue of meaning as a biological phenomenon. The author deliberates on the meanings in language that stem from the sounds of words, articulation, and their psychological dimension
Dokumenty osobiste a doświadczenie migracji. Refleksje metodologiczne
Biographical research is often used as a tool in studying social reality; however, this research approach is hardly ever the object of theoretical and methodological reflections. Meanwhile, even the most basic and fundamental research questions – What is considered a biographical document? How can it be used and analysed? What ethical norms should the researcher abide to? – are still worth discussing. The following paper addresses those questions while referring to historical and contemporary findings made by researchers employing this approach (e.g., Florian Znaniecki’s humanistic coefficient principle). Furthermore, the author discusses the memoir of Władek Wiśniewski – included in the third volume of The Polish Peasant in Europe and America by Florian Znaniecki and William Thomas – as the exemplification of the aforementioned issues. The limitations of the most common approach to biographical documents (seen as an objective source of information about the reality, its faithful and neutral reflection) allow the author to suggests a different, pragmatical approach. Prezentowany tekst porusza te kwestie, przypominając klasyczne i współczesne ustalenia badaczy używających tej metody (np. zasada współczynnika humanistycznego F. Znanieckiego), a następnie czyniąc pamiętnik Władka Wiśniewskiego zamieszczony w trzecim tomie Chłopa polskiego W. Thomasa i F. Znanieckiego egzemplifikacją najważniejszych dylematów. Wskazanie ograniczenia najczęściej stosowanego podejścia do dokumentów osobistych (traktowanych jako źródło wiedzy o obiektywnej rzeczywistości, jej wierne i neutralne „odbicie”) prowadzi do naszkicowania możliwości innego podejścia, zwanego pragmatycznym
A Hundred Years of Village Monographs in Poland. Jubilee Reflections
Monographs of local rural communities played an important role in Polish sociology until the 1970s. They had been preceded by numerous sociographic descriptions and social surveys made already in the first half of the 19th century.Numerous critical remarks made about classical (descriptive, encyclopedic) monographs, which stressed that such accounts lacked a representative character and provided no material for formulating general conclusions, that they represented a synchronic and not a diachronic approach and contained redundant details, were justified. However, the best monographs in Polish sociology met all the strict methodological requirements and their most important value was a reliable description of social reality, which has been neglected since the moment of the popularization of research conducted with the help of questionnaires that concentrate mainly on the analysis of the respondents’ awareness. Traditional monographs seem to represent an interesting approach to scientific investigations, even from the point of view of present dilemmas in social sciences (the postulated restraint on the part of the author, incoherence of culture, the researcher’s ethos, science’s non-involvement in temporary matters). Therefore, it is worth examining this inconsiderately abandoned genre of sociological literature

The Sociology of the Body, or (For the Time Being) Decorative Theories
The sociological interest in the body is defined mainly by the so called Cartesian paradigm, which posits that everything in society and culture (including human bodies and material objects) has only arbitrary qualities. This position negates the existence of prior physical and embodied meanings, which have been studied by late phenomenology and which have been studied by anthropologists (Paul Willis, Kirsten Hastrup). Such theories, focusing on descriptions of social and cultural reconstructions of the body, have been called “decorative theories” by Bryan Turner. The validity of this critique is confirmed by other researchers, who call for a renaturalization of social research and the humanities (Doris Bachmann-Medick, Jürgen Habermas, Ted Benton, and Ian Craib). Recent work by Polish and international scholars allow us to expect a shift in the current sociological paradigm towards one that is materialistic, embodied, and thus naturalist
Polska wieś – bilans kilku transformacji
It is clearly visible that the last twenty years of transformation process was a period of constant criticism of everything related to the notion of peasantry and village. It is not only journalists and participants of public debates who express their censure but also sociologists recognized in the media as experts. All these opinions – appraisal and judgments expressed indirectly albeit strongly – contributed the negative perception of the Polish village
