Interaction of Chinese institutions with host governments in dam construction: the Bui Dam in Ghana
The study analyses the role of Chinese companies and financing institutions and Ghanaian governmental agencies in planning and constructing the Bui Dam. The analysis focuses on the division of responsibilities between Sinohydro and China Exim Bank on the one side and the Ghanaian government on the other side. The findings show that environmental and resettlement planning for Bui was commissioned and financed by the Government of Ghana without Sinohydro’s involvement. The obligation of the firm is to abide by the environmental regulations that are monitored by the regulatory authorities. The role of Sinohydro consists in building the dam, maintaining the construction site, contracting workers, and providing for workers’ health and safety. The firm has no role in resettlement, which is carried out by the Bui Power Authority. While there is clear evidence that the Bui Power Authority does not follow the recommendations of the Resettlement Planning Framework, Sinohydro appears to abide largely by the conditions set out in the Environmental Impact Assessment study whose implementation is monitored by the Ghanaian Environmental Protection Agency and the Ghanaian Water Resources Commission
Oral History of Steven Bui
This is an oral history with Mr. Steven Bui, born in 1961 in Phan Thiet, Vietnam. He lived in Phan Thiet for most of his childhood before moving to Binh Thuy. He is the oldest of 10 other children in a Catholic family. He experienced hardships during the Vietnam War, including the loss of his uncle. His family then escaped to Vietnam in 1976 and moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. He discusses life in New Orleans and why he moved to California in 1983. He is now an investor in Garden Grove, California. He is married with two children.Recorded Digitall
Oral History of Ung Canh Bui
An oral history with Mr. Ung Canh Bui, a refugee and boat person of the Vietnam War. The interview’s beginning focus is on Ung’s life and the hardships he faced as a child growing up in poverty during the War. This interview then focused on his experience during the Vietnam War to the fall of Saigon as an officer of the Air Force and how the war affected him and his family. Ung describes his journey to America and his transition from a Vietnamese to a first generation Vietnamese American.Recorded Digitall
Top Management Team Diversity: A systematic Review
Empirical research investigating the impact of top management team (TMT)
diversity on executives’ decision making has produced inconclusive results.
To synthesize and aggregate the results on the diversity-performance
link, a meta-regression analysis (MRA) is conducted. It integrates more
than 200 estimates from 53 empirical studies investigating TMT diversity
and its impact on the quality of executives’ decision making as reflected
in corporate performance. The analysis contributes to the literature by
theoretically discussing and empirically examining the effects of TMT diversity
on corporate performance. Our results do not show a link between TMT
diversity and performance but provide evidence for publication bias. Thus,
the findings raise doubts on the impact of TMT diversity on performance

Appendix 23MasterHeavy metal ion pollution poses severe risks for human health and the environment. The sensitive detection of heavy metal ions, such as mercuric ion is currently a task of prime importance for environmental and biological applications. An electrochemical method for the selective detection of Hg2+ ions has been developed using new ferrocene derivatives 2-((bis(2-(ethylthio)ethylamino)methyl)-N-ferrocenylmethyl H1A and 2-(ethylthiomethyl)-N-ferrocenylmethyl aniline H2A. These compounds were synthesized in good yield and characterized by general spectroscopic tools. The electrochemical response of these compounds upon the specific metal ion binding was measured italic cyclic voltammetry (CV). Upon adding mercuric ions into the solution of H1A or H2A, the oxidation peaks of H1A or H2A are shifted to the negative voltage compared to the oxidation potential of the mercury free H1A or H2A. In the case of H1A, we observed only the shift of oxidation peaks potential. But in H2A case, besides the oxidation peaks potential shifts, a new potential waves was formed in the investigative potential range. In both cases, compared to other metal ions, mercuric ion shows higher binding affinity which is exposing the possibility of the application to an electrochemical mercuric ion-sensor
Huyen Bui oral history interview and transcript
This recording and transcript form part of a collection of oral history interviews conducted by the Chao Center for Asian Studies at Rice University. This collection includes audio recordings and transcripts of interviews with Asian Americans native to or living in Houston.Huyen Bui was born in Saigon in 1969. Huyen moved to Houston in the mid-2000s to marry his wife, a fellow Vietnamese immigrant whose family settled in Houston. He currently lives in West University with his wife and two young children
Oral History of Huy Bui
An oral history of Huy Bui, a former United States Marine who is now an electronic technician for Ricoh Electronics. This interview focuses on his experiences as a first generation Vietnamese American who lived through the time of the Vietnam War and under communist rule for three years prior to fleeing to the United States in 1978 by boat. He speaks in detail about his life before and during the war and how things changed quickly as the communist took over control during 1975. He speaks out to the youth to remember and know about the events that occurred in Vietnam during the Vietnam War and to become activists in society to help free Vietnam and the youth who are struggling. He now resides in Midway City, California, in the heart of Little Saigon along with his wife and two children who are activists alongside him.Recorded Digitall
Oral History of Bui Bich Ha
Oral history of Ms. Bui Bich Ha (or Bich-Ha Bui, western-style), a woman born in 1938 in Hue, Vietnam. She spoke in detail about her father, one of the four wealthiest men in Vietnam in the mid-century. The interview also explores her memories of life before the August Revolution of 1945, then the years before 1954, and finally the drastic changes to her family’s fortune after 1954. She became a teacher and radio broadcaster before 1975. Then, after the Vietnam War ended, her children had to join the youth cadres while she continued teaching. Her family left Vietnam via sponsorship in 1985. After resettlement in the US, she worked at various jobs such as assembly-work and eventually moved up in her career in research & development. Meanwhile, she also actively participated in community work, ran a radio program on “women and family,” and served as editor of “Phu Nu Gia Dinh” Magazine. She raised her two daughters in America alone. At the time of interview she is retired from her job and radio program, but continues to serve as editor of Phu Nu Gia Dinh.Recorded Digitall
