The image of an eroded stone on which writing represents no longer a text but a mere trace revealing a human passage is a major theme in the works of the Francophone poet Philippe Jaccottet. On the one hand, the written stone appears as a visual analogon of the poetical discourse, depriving it of its sacred immortal aura and announcing prophetically its approaching death. On the other hand, its dullness and its density express symbolically the challenge that the subject launches against death, justifying Jaccottet’s predilection for the mineral imagery as a metapoetic element

CORPS DE FEMMES ET MAISONS D’ENFANTS DANS "ENFANTS DU DIABLE" DE LILIANA LAZAR
Women’s Bodies and Children’s Homes in Liliana Lazar’s Enfants du diable [The Devil’s Children]. Many contemporary Romanian writers who chose French as a literary language seem to share a common interest in revisiting through fiction Romania’s relatively recent communist past, thus exposing the dysfunctionalities of the ‘multilaterally developed socialist society’ during the last years of Nicolae Ceaușescu’s dictatorship. In her novel, Enfants du diable (2016), Liliana Lazar’s merit is to emphasize the abusive nature of the Romanian totalitarian regime by exploring a topic which is normally less taken into account by post-communist Romanian fiction, namely the private body of women transformed into a public, even political body after the implementation of the Anti-abortion Decree 770/1966. Our aim is to examine the way in which Lazar’s book deals with this topic and its social and personal consequences, as well as its denunciation of a less evident form of the communist carceral system, namely the institutionalization of orphaned children.

International audienceThis book aims to provide a window into some gray areas of the poetical universe of Philippe Jaccottet, whose work is generally considered to be clear, transparent and sheltered from historical contingencies. The object of our inquiry concerns what we called the “repressed” part of his work, which means everything Jaccottet’s writing does not explicitly affirm or what it seems to reject. We wanted to show that History, the great Absent in Jaccottet’s canonical writings, nevertheless reveals itself in the implicitness of his work, through allusions, things left unsaid, ambiguities, contradictions or poetic motifs requiring, for their understanding, an analysis that would go beyond a simple transhistorical reading. In the end, less than answering questions already posed, this work would launch new questions, by practicing a ‘critical reading of suspicion’ which, we hope, does not exclude the candid pleasure of the innocent reading, that of a loving embrace of the object examined.

Rendering oral language in the 19th century. Case study: A Youth’s Guide to Good Habits. The present paper discusses a series of punctuation marks identified in a small book published in 1819 in Sibiu, and entitled Cărticica năravurilor bune pentru tinerime [A Youth’s Guide to Good Habits]. Our purpose is to see to what extent such signs (which remain, after all, written) can render orality and help ‘translate’ the ‘speaking’ (la parole) or the modulation of a ‘spoken voice’ hidden underneath the written text.

Jacques Poulin’s Fictional Translator or the Invention of a Literary Myth. The present paper attempts to explore the reasons of a literary success: the fictional translator in 21st century Francophone fiction. Are we to place such success in the sociological and economical changes occurred in the late 1990s within the context of globalization and of the (re)invention of new professional identities? The starting point of our analysis will be a recent novel published by Jacques Poulin, La traduction est une histoire d’amour (2006), which will permit us to link the narrative success of the translator to sociological reflections on the Quebec territory challenged by a bilingual consciousness.
