The ideologies of these political formations show a close relationship with gender issues and the complex and articulated use of these issues is the subject of this paper. Himpathy in the Social Representation of Gender-Based Violence by the Italian Press. A Content Analysis of 16 National Newspapers through the years 2020-2023
No full textMale violence against women – recognised as a violation of human rights by the Istanbul Convention – is rooted in structural power asymmetries between men and women and is reflected, legitimised and reproduced by culture, which is permeated by stereotypes and prejudices. News media, in particular, often convey a distorted representation of the phenomenon as male violence against women is frequently framed as a private, individual and episodic matter, rather than as a problem of collective importance. Furthermore, the perpetrator is represented as only partially responsible, since the framing of the phenomenon offered by press tends to portray him as driven to action by the woman’s “misconduct” or by an irrepressible impulse. This article presents a summary of the main findings of a quantitative-qualititave analysis of an extensive database consisting of articles published on these topics by the 16 most widely distributed newspapers in Italy. We argue that these articles use rhetorical strategies that tend to distribute the responsibility of violence between the victim and the perpetrator. Thus re-victimizing the women who have suffered violence while, at the same time, offering empathy towards their offender
Judgement versus Prejudice. A Best-Practice Case Study in the Legal and Social Representation of Gender Based Violence
No full textThe representation of male violence against women in public discourse can contribute to various forms of gender-based social injustice and lead to secondary victimisation. Journalistic and legal language plays a key role in this process: it can reinforce distorted narratives or, conversely, help promote a culture that actively challenges and prevents gender discrimination and violence. This paper draws on the analysis of a corpus of judicial rulings issued between 2020 and 2022 by the Court of Tivoli, a nationally recognised example of good practice in the legal handling of gender-based violence. Based on this analysis, the article aims to identify effective strategies and formulate guidelines for the accurate and responsible representation of gender-based violence in both legal and journalistic language
The Political Role of Italian Anti-violence Centers (CAV) and LGBTQ+ Centers Against Discrimination (CAD) in the Public Sphere
No full textIn Italy, violence against women and LGBTQ+ people is constantly increasing, but despite this, policies implemented to address these issues have, so far, been fragmented and weak. This paper addresses the political conflict surrounding gender-based violence and focuses on the political role of Anti-violence Centers (also known as CAV) and LGBTQ+ Centers Against Discrimination (CAD). We present the main results of a research conducted with a qualitative approach (in-depth interviews, interviews with key informants) to reconstruct, from a comparative perspective, some of the best practices in prevention, education, and awareness by Anti-Violence and LGBTQ+ Centers Against Discrimination with a particular focus on the specific case study of the CAD in Reggio Calabria
The pack of the “Green Park”. Rhetorics and stereotypes in the press representation of a gang rape case
No full textThis paper examines media representations of the gang rapes perpetrated in Caivano, a town in the Neapolitan hinterland, involving two young victims aged 10 and 12 and nine aggressors, seven of whom were minors. Through a mixed methods content analysis of a corpus of 110 articles from 15 Italian newspapers, the work investigates how the narrative surrounding the case was constructed, focusing on issues of secondary victimization and concealment of male responsibility. The findings reveal a systematic use of the “periphery rhetoric” to obscure the perpetrators’ accountability and to deflect attention from the gendered dimensions of the violence, ultimately depoliticizing it
