    Integrating Real Tree Skeleton Reconstruction Based on Partial Computational Virtual Measurement (CVM) with Actual Forest Scenario Rendering: A Solid Step Forward for the Realization of the Digital Twins of Trees and Forests

    Digital twins of forests (trees) are computational virtual recreations of forests (trees) in which the entity distributions and physical processes in real-world forests (trees) are duplicated. It is expected that conventional forest science and management can be undertaken in a digital twin of forests (trees) if the recreation of a real-world forest (tree) has accurate and comprehensive enough information. However, due to the various differences between the current tree model and the real tree, these envisioned digital twins of the forests (trees) stay a theoretical concept. In this study, we developed a processing strategy that partially integrated computational virtual measurement (CVM) process into the tree modeling workflow. Owing to the feature of CVM, partial tree skeleton reconstruction procedures were considered to have higher mechanical objectivity compared to conventional mathematical modeling methods. The reason was that we developed a novel method called virtual diameter tape (VDT), which could provide a certain percentage of modeling elements using CVM. Technically, VDT was able to virtually measure diameters and spatial distribution of cross-sectional area of trees, including the basal area, from point clouds. VDT simulated the physical scenario of diameter tapes, observing point clouds of trees. Diameter and the cross-sectional area of stem and branches were obtained by two consecutive physical measurement processes, one in the forest sample site and another in the virtual space. At the same time, VDT obtained better or a similar accuracy compared to the mathematical methods, i.e., Hough transform-based methods, using the same data sets. The root-mean-square deviation (RMSE) of retrieval of diameter at breast height (DBH) using VDT was 1.02 cm, while DBH obtained from three conventional methods varied from 1.29 cm to 1.73 cm. Based on VDT measurement results, tree skeleton reconstruction and actual forest scenario rendering of our sample plots were further implemented. Beyond the visual consistency, we believe that our work might be a small and solid step in the technological evolution from tree models to the digital twin of forests (trees)

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Characterization of Forest Stands using Laser Scanning and Radiative Transfer Modeling

    Die Beobachtung und Bewertung von Wäldern ist eins der zentralen Themen der Fernerkundung. Wälder sind auf der Erde die größten Speicher von Biomasse und damit, neben den Ozeanen, die größte Senke für Kohlendioxid. Eine genaue Kenntnis über Zusammensetzung, Zustand und Entwicklung der Wälder ist wegen ihrer vielfältigen Funktionen und ihres großen Anteils an der Landesfläche von großem wissenschaftlichem und gesellschaftlichem Wert. Eine flächen-deckende detaillierte Beobachtung ist nur mit fernerkundlichen Mitteln möglich. Eine vielversprechende moderne Technik für hochauflösende Waldfernerkundung ist luftgestütztes Laser-¬scanning. Für die Arbeit stand ein Laserscanner-Datensatz aus dem Idarwald bei Morbach in Einzelpunkten und als Wellenformdatensatz zur Verfügung, der zur Ableitung von strukturellen Waldparametern genutzt wurde. Als wichtigster Bestandsstrukturparameter wurde die Baumhöhe sowohl aus Einzelpunktdaten als auch aus gerasterten Bilddaten flächendeckend mit hoher Genauigkeit abgeleitet. Die Kronenuntergrenzen konnten anhand der Wellenformdaten identifiziert werden und stimmten ebenfalls in hoher Genauigkeit mit Geländemessungen überein. Aus Baumhöhen und Höhe der Kronenuntergrenzen konnte die jeweilige Kronenlänge bestimmt werden. Eine größere Herausforderung ist die Bestimmung der Anzahl der Bäume pro Hektar. Während die einzelnen Kronen älterer Nadelbäume gut erkennbar sind, lassen sich Laubbäume und jüngere Nadelbäume nur schwer identifizieren. Trotzdem konnte mit Hilfe eines adaptiven Moving-Window-Ansatzes eine hohe Übereinstimmung mit im Gelände bestimmten Stammzahlen erzielt werden. Aus dem Anteil der Laserstrahlen, die im Bestand den Boden erreichen, können der Kronenschlussgrad und der Blattflächenindex bestimmt werden. Beide Größen sind für den Strahlungstransfer im Bestand und für ökologische Fragestellungen von Bedeutung und konnten ebenfalls flächendeckend und mit hoher Genauigkeit gemessen werden. Eng verknüpft mit dem Blattflächenindex sind die Biomasse und der Holzvorrat. Der Holzvorrat kann zwar nicht direkt aus den Laser-¬scannerdaten abgeleitet werden, da aber enge Beziehungen zu Baumhöhe und Stammzahl bestehen, kann er aus diesen statistisch abgeleitet werden. Auch die Biomasse wurde indirekt bestimmt: aus den Baumhöhen und dem Bedeckungsgrad. Die detaillierteste Charakterisierung von Waldbeständen kann durch Kombination unterschiedlicher Datensätze erreicht werden. Neben dem Laserscanningdatensatz stand auch ein hyperspektrales Bild des Untersuchungsgebiets zur Verfügung. Um diese zu kombinieren, wurde aus den Wellenformen die jeweils über der Fläche eines Hyperspektralpixels zurückgestreute Laserenergie in Höhenschritten von 0.5 m berechnet. Diese Höhenprofile zeigen die Position und Dichte der Baumkronen. Der kombinierte Datensatz wurde für eine Klassifikation zwischen Fichten und Douglasien in jeweils mehreren Altersstufen verwendet und konnte gegenüber dem Hyperspektralbild alleine eine deutliche Verbesserung der Klassifikationsgenauigkeit erzielen. Als weitere Methode, die Vorteile von hyperspektraler Fernerkundung mit denen von Laser-scanning zu verbinden, wurden Methoden zur Verwendung von Laserscanning für die Invertierung von zwei Reflexionsmodellen entwickelt und getestet. Da mit Laserscanning Größen bestimmt werden können, die aus einem Reflexionsspektrum nicht eindeutig ableitbar sind, können die Daten verwendet werden, um den Parameterraum bei der Invertierung zu verkleinern und damit die Invertierung zuverlässiger zu machen.Monitoring and evaluation of forests is one of the central topics of remote sensing. Forests are the largest reservoirs of biomass and thus, apart from the oceans, the largest carbon dioxide sink. Due to their manifold functions and their large area, detailed knowledge of composition, condition and development of forests is crucial for science and society. Only remote sensing offers the possibility of monitoring complete forests. Airborne laser scanning is a promising technology for high-resolution forest remote sensing. A point and waveform data set of the Idarwald forest near Morbach was used in this work for the derivation of structural forest parameters. The most important structural stand parameter is the tree height. It was derived with high precision from single point data as well as from raster images. Crown base heights could be measured using waveform data, allowing for the calculation of crown lengths. Measuring the number of trees per hectare is a challenge. While the crowns of mature conifers are comparatively easily detectable, deciduous trees and young conifer trees are harder to count. But still a good agreement between field measurements and tree densities derived from Lidar could be achieved using an adaptive moving window approach. The fractional cover and the leaf area index of tree crowns can be derived from the portion of the laser beams reaching the ground. Biomass and timber volume are further products that could be measured using leaf area index, tree height and stem density. The most detailed characterization of forest stands can be achieved by combining different data sets. A hyperspectral image of the same area as the laser scanning data was available. To combine both, average waveforms for the hyperspectral image- pixel areas were calculated in a vertical resolution of 0.5 m. The height profiles show the extent and density of tree crowns. The combined data set was tested in a classification of coniferous tree species and age classes and performed significantly better than the hyperspectral image alone. As another way of combining the advantages of hyperspectral remote sensing and laser scanning methods of using laser scanning in the inversion of radiative transfer models were developed. Laser scanning is capable of measuring variables that cannot be derived unambiguously from the reflectance spectrum. These structural data can be utilized to reduce the number of free parameters in the inversion process in order to make the inversion results more reliable

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
