The ethics of thinking in Heidegger, Bruno & Spinoza
The aim of the present work is to face Heidegger’s claim that philosophy has ended.
Facing this claim for us has not taken the form of creating a new method or positing a
new question but that of a search for anomalies in what Heidegger decrees as
finished, which is philosophy as metaphysics. In his historical confrontation with the
history of thought Heidegger seems to have left out, dismissed or forgotten those
authors who do not fit into his definition of metaphysics. We have chosen Giordano
Bruno and Baruch Spinoza, metaphysical thinkers who have undertaken a
philosophical practice that does not intend to demolish subjectivity but actually
begins without any need for it. The birth of the subject as grounding reality finds its
affirmation with Descartes and inaugurates modernity that, according to Heidegger,
exhausts philosophy and leads it into the arms of modern science and technology.
Bruno and Spinoza respectively precede and follow the birth of modernity and of
modern science, which they look at with an eye that is not that of the modern subject.
Following their different approaches to philosophy, we shall also explore their
relation to Renaissance Humanism, dismissed by Heidegger as a historical reiteration
of the Roman world, perceived as a perversion of the Greek origin of thought. We
shall show how hasty such a dismissal is. Our goal is to show not merely that
Heidegger is wrong but that if Western thinking contains the seeds of its own end, it
also contains the ones of a different understanding of the Western world and its
achievements. The three authors will engage on the grounds of ontology, gnosiology
and ethics and yet we have defined the whole enterprise of this work as an ethics
overall. An ethics of thinking is a practice of thought that wishes to envisage the
possibility for Western man of inhabiting his own world by understanding himself
not as an isolated subject and master of nature but as the place where the unity and
multiplicity of nature come to be thought at the same time

Enlaces: memória e subjetividades no acervo Jorge Amado
Abstract : My dissertation´s main objective is to present the result of the affective relations constituted and apprehended from Jorge Amado´s collection (NuLIME). My subjectivity is connected to the material memory of the letters destined or posted by two communists: Juan and Joaquim. Reading them has enabled me to reframe the questions of authorship and epistolary literature. The work was partially presented as letters. The writing, classified in between fictional and factual, refers to the social and political context and to the narrative from communists and political persecuted who lived this period of Brazilian intellectual, social, political and literary life
Ethics of dust:visual essay on the artistic works by Jorge Otero-Pailos
The works of artist and preservation architect Jorge Otero-Pailos on experimental preservation provoke deep reflections about some of the fundamental questions dealing with heritage: temporality of objects, changeability of inscribed cultural values, the greater purpose of architectural preservation as a cultural practice, and the societal role of an architect and preservationist in formulating narratives around heritage. As the artistic installations featured in this visual essay — The Ethics of Dust (2014–2016) and Watershed Moment (2020) — demonstrate, Jorge Otero-Pailos combines various elusive elements, such as water sounds and dust, to conceive meditative and contemplative spaces. His installations invite visitors to pause and reflect on the memories, both personal, social, and environmental, that define each of us; they probe deep into the past and deep into the future.Since these are some of the issues we wanted to explore in this special issue, ‘Embodiment and Meaning-making: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Heritage Architecture’, we invited various artists and scholars to write a very short caption in reaction to the images provided by the author through one of these three ‘lenses’:- affect, embodied experience, atmosphere;- politics of heritage;- processes of meaning-making.The results reveal the power of images to provoke imagination through atmospheric and embodied experiences, and the power of experimental heritage work to convey (political) meaning across distance and different analogue or digital media. This visual essay includes contributions from (in order of appearance): Tenna Doktor Olsen Tvedebrink, Federico De Matteis, Michael Hirschbichler, Jovana Popić, Maria De Piedade Ferreira, Uta Pottgiesser, Marcus Weisen and Brady Wagoner, with an epilogue from Jorge Otero-Pailos.Situated ArchitectureHeritage & Technolog
La Diana of Montemayor as Social and Religious Teaching
Jorge de Montemayor’s great pastoral novel La Diana (1559), one of the fountainheads of Spanish Renaissance literature, has often been regarded as a work written merely to amuse an effete courtly world. Bruno M. Damiani argues here that, far from being simply a “pastoral dream,” Diana has profound socio-historical and religious dimensions, and that Montemayor’s intentions in it were largely moral and instructive.
The timeless, idyllic nature which forms the essence of the pastoral is, in the case of Diana, inextricably bound up with the grace and sophistication of urban Spanish culture. Indeed, this study shows, Montemayor’s shepherds and shepherdesses exist not in an imaginary Arcadian land but in the very real Spain and Portugal of their author’s own time, and many of the characters are disguises for actual persons of the Spanish court, including perhaps the author himself.
Similarly, the philosophical and religious concerns of Renaissance Spain are fully explored in the lives of Montemayor’s sorrowing rustics. Symbolically they are sinners who have fallen from grace and must undertake a spiritual pilgrimage, one which ultimately leads them to an understanding of the Christian virtues of faith, hope, and charity.
Mustering a wealth of classical, biblical, medieval, and Renaissance sources, the author reveals the underlying fabric of Diana, an inter-twining of allegory, symbolism, and imagery intended to instruct Monte-mayor’s readers in the path of virtue. Damiani’s analysis of this important work offers us a clearer view of the intellectual life of Renaissance Spain.
Bruno M. Damiani is professor of romance languages at the Catholic University of America. He is the general editor of Studia Humanitatis and a widely published authority on Spanish literature of the Renaissance.https://uknowledge.uky.edu/upk_spanish_literature/1010/thumbnail.jp

Exercise stress testing as a predictor of progression of early chronic Chagas heart disease
It is estimated that about four million people have chagasic heart disease in Latin America. The early detection of those patients who are likely to progress to more severe disease is necessary for appropriate treatment management to prevent further cardiac damage. The detection of ventricular arrhythmias is regarded as an expression of cardiac involvement in chagasic patients1 and it is a common finding during stress testing. The objective of this study was to ascertain whether stress testing has prognostic value for the progression of early chronic Chagas heart disease.Fil: Viotti, Rodolfo Jorge. The labyrinth of representation in the literature of Jorge Luis Borges
(Texto tomado de la fuente)The Labyrinth of Representation in the Literature of Jorge Luis Borges This work explores, based on five stories by the argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges, the way in which representation plays a role in the creation of literary images. These images imply the execution of the metaphor as a narrative tool, with which it is possible to describe otherwise impossible objects and phenomena. This is the case of the image of random, which takes shape with the multiple images of labyrinths proposed by the author. It will be seen that this exploration contemplates the relations with the Jewish, Christian and Greek traditions, for this reason mythological ties are drawn. Finally, an effort is proposed to describe geometrically and spatially some of these labyrinths within the stories.MaestríaMagíster en EstéticaÁrea Curricular de Ciencias Humanas y Sociale
