Early Timing Exploration of Embedded Software for Heterogeneous Platforms
Under growing tasks complexity and time-to-market pressures, modern embedded systems are commonly characterized by large software applications that are collaboratively executed on complex multiprocessing and heterogeneous computation platforms. Furthermore, functional and non-functional requirements drive the design and development of such performance-critical embedded systems. On the one hand, these powerful platforms offer high-computation
capabilities, but on the other hand, the complexity of their architectures limits the performance analyzability of the complete system. Non-functional properties, such as the execution time, have to be assessed since the early design stages of a system. For this reason, during the design space exploration activities, the designers and the engineers are commonly interested in evaluating different hardware and software configurations for determining the
most suitable one for ensuring that the final implementation can satisfy the strict performance requirements. This evaluation is usually conducted via virtual prototypes that rely on a timing simulator. The effectiveness of the evaluation depends on the speed and accuracy of the underlying simulator. Therefore, a simulation methodology is essential for supporting the early evaluation of multiple hardware and software configurations of a system.
This thesis proposes a novel simulation methodology that allows to rapidly and accurately evaluate the performance of multiple configurations of an embedded system. The definition of the simulation methodology requires facing multiple hard challenges that are common to performance simulators. The proposed methodology is based on the program’s intermediate representation that is internal to the compiler and it ensures a beneficial level of abstraction for both the analysis and simulation stages. The intermediate representation is architecture-independent
and it allows evaluating multiple configurations in only one simulation. This choice requires an appropriate mapping technique for matching the structures of a program at the intermediate and the binary representations. Their structures may substantially differ due to the effects of aggressive compiler optimizations that make a direct matching impossible. For this reason, this thesis proposes an innovative two-phases algorithm for tackling this hard problem. Relying on these mappings and on an appropriate technique for modelling the timing behavior of programs, accurate performance estimations can be produced via fast simulations. Furthermore, the conducted experimental evaluation results show that the simulation methodology can be applied for early evaluating the design of complex heterogeneous systems. Finally, the elevated simulation speed capabilities enable the definition of a new co-simulation technique for evaluating the performance of embedded systems that are developed directly on a model-driven environment such as the one provided by Simulink
Application-specific Analysis and Optimization of Energy Efficiency in Embedded Hardware/Software Systems
Electronic systems are playing an increasingly important role in daily life. This is particularly true for digital embedded systems that integrate micro- and nanoelectronic hardware components to provide a specific functionality by running dedicated software programs. Thus, embedded hardware/software systems have become the leading means for innovation and growth in virtually all application domains. Especially, the market for mobile electronic devices has undergone a tremendous growth in recent years. Their power consumption, however, is a major problem due to the limited energy storage capabilities of today’s battery technologies and thus becomes a decisive competition criterion in the market. Furthermore, these systems have to fulfill increasingly complex and highly interconnected tasks while still meeting strict requirements. Besides of developing new and efficient hardware platforms, the development of strategies to minimize energy consumption and optimize energy efficiency by applying low-power mechanisms is a crucial factor.
In this work, a model-based approach for application-specific optimization of energy efficiency by using different operating states of the target architecture is described based on the analysis of the executed functionality. This optimization process takes both the requirements imposed on the system and the underlying hardware platform into account. First, an algorithm is presented which incorporates design-time properties of the system model, e.g. the worst-case execution time of an application, and which is based on the mathematical formulation of an optimization problem. The resulting non-linear problem is reformulated to a linear problem by abstraction and addition of further parameters. The objectives of this optimization are both an energy-efficient mapping of the specified applications on available computation units and their temporal scheduling, as well as the dynamic allocation of available operating modes taking into account additional overheads caused by mode changes. An automatic generation process of an executable model or a virtual prototype respectively enables an early evaluation of the system behavior, as well as the extraction of typical usage scenarios of applications. Based on the analyzed scenarios a pre-calculation of all valid system states is done using an extended max-plus algebra representing the application execution modeled by an extended SDF model. Applying a defined management strategy, the energy efficiency is optimized by performing a dynamic adjustment of operating modes during runtime. So, the embedded hardware/software system is dynamically set to an energy-efficient state considering the actual system requirements.
The results of this work are achieved by mapping applications onto the Intel SCC architecture. The SCC architecture contains 64 cores and a meshed on-chip communication network, as well as a user-controllable dynamic power management
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
A Comprehensive Methodology for Intelligent On-board Condition Monitoring of Electric Drives
Electric drives are often used to power electrified vehicles such as electric cars or pedelecs. As any other mechanical system, electric drives wear out with time, which, consequently, increases the possibility of sudden failures that might compromise the safety of people in the surroundings of the vehicle powered by the damaged drive.
A method to effectively increase the reliability of electric drives is the on-board condition monitoring of the device. By applying condition monitoring, failures can be detected and classified in advance, which allows to take preventive measures before a failure occurs.
This thesis introduces a comprehensive methodology which comprises all relevant stages for the development of intelligent algorithms for condition monitoring: from the data acquisition and pre-processing to the systematic generation of accurate and compact machine learning models for timely preventive measures.
The main objective of the introduced approach is to predict the remaining useful life of an electric drive. Furthermore, the presented approach also enables the on-board fault diagnosis if required.
The proposed methodology is validated with a proprietary database consisting of data collected with electric drives for pedelecs.
The findings of this case study show that the introduced methodology enables a reliable identification of the end of useful life of electric drives, which is required for data labeling. Moreover, the generated models are able to accurately predict the end of useful life of an electric drive with sufficient time in advance, and to correctly identify the damaged element as well. Finally, this study shows how the resulting models are suitable for an embedded implementation for on-board condition monitoring due to their reduced size and computational complexity.
In a second case study, the failure prognosis algorithms are compared with other related techniques using a benchmark database.
This study demonstrates the high efficiency of the proposed method to estimate the time to failure with very compact models, when compared to other related approaches
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Abschätzung der Performanz in Hardware und Software Co-Simulation
The scope of this work encompasses two major aspects of non-functional performance estimation in fast hardware and software co-simulation. Firstly, a method for annotating the source code with performance modeling codes is proposed. The annotation features detailed control-flow analysis. Secondly, this work proposes a means to extract the timings of highly abstract transactions and an analytical model to time temporally decoupled transaction-level models.
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
