An examination of rockshelter palynology: Carpenter's Gap 1, northwestern Australia

    No full text
Carpenter’s Gap 1 is a large rockshelter located within the Kimberley region of northwestern Australia. The site provides valuable archives of late Quaternary palaeoecological information within an area known for a lack of deposits preserving long-term continuous botanical records. Previous studies of the macrobotanic, phytolith and wood charcoal records from Carpenter’s Gap 1 are in general agreement about changes in broad vegetation patterns over time but differ in the time scales used, in the representation of some species, and in the interpretation of changes – particularly on the degree to which the variations in the record represent cultural activities. An examination of palynology (the transport, deposition and preservation of pollen within the rockshelter environment) provides more detail to the vegetation patterns identified in these previous studies. In addition, because the pollen most likely reflects the vegetation of the site’s surrounds over time rather than plants introduced into the shelter by people, interpretation can be more confidently linked to environmental change, and by inference climatic conditions. The pollen data reveal pre-glacial mixed wooded vegetation. From the beginning of the Holocene, tree loss occurred in a transition from monsoonal forest to thicket and eucalypt forest to woodland. Vegetation transition around the mid Holocene suggests a shift in climate, becoming drier and more variable towards and into the late Holocene. The role of fire in the establishment of vegetation communities remains under investigation. The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship and/or publication of this article: This project was funded by an Australian Research Council grant to O’Connor and Balme, LP100200415 ‘Lifeways of the first Australians’, with contributions from the Kimberley Foundation Australia and the Department of Sustainability, Water, Populations and Communities as well as support from the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Australian Biodiversity and Heritage (CE170100015)

Eruption of lymphocyte recovery with atypical lymphocytes mimicking a primary cutaneous T-cell lymphoma: a series of 12 patients.

Eruption of lymphocyte recovery (ELR) may occur during bone marrow aplasia after chemotherapies. We reviewed the clinical and pathologic features of 12 patients (male-female ratio, 7:5; median age, 61 years) with an atypical ELR histologically mimicking a primary cutaneous T-cell lymphoma such as Sézary syndrome or CD30+ T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder. All the patients displayed an erythematous maculopapular eruption on the trunk and the limbs associated with fever. All but one had received a polychemotherapy for an acute myeloid leukemia (n=10) or a urothelial carcinoma (n=1) before the occurrence of the skin eruption. One had an autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome causing chronic agranulocytosis requiring granulocyte colony-stimulating factor injection. In all patients, the skin eruption was associated with a slight increase of white blood cell count followed by bone marrow recovery within the next weeks. All skin biopsies showed a dermal perivascular lymphocytic infiltrate containing atypical medium- to large-sized CD3+, CD4+ and CD8+, CD25+, ICOS+, PD1- lymphocytes with a strong CD30 expression in most instances (n=10), suggesting the recruitment of strongly activated T cells in the skin. In 6 patients, a diagnosis of CD30+ lymphoproliferative disorder or Sézary syndrome was proposed or suspected histopathologically, and only the clinical context allowed the diagnosis of ELR with a peculiar presentation with atypical lymphocytes. We describe a series of patients with an unusual form of ELR characterized by the presence of atypical activated T cells in the skin. On a practical ground, pathologists should be aware of this distinctive and misleading presentation

A Chinese vision on Africa : sociogenesis of the field of expertise on Africa in China

    No full text
This thesis analyzes the evolution of China’s expertise of Africa and the rise of a champ of African studies “with Chinese characteristics” in the 21st century. From a historical perspective, the author investigates the origins and the development of China’s knowledge on Africa, in order to highlight how African studies in China went from being a marginal field of research in the 1950s to become a hot issue in the 2000 along with the development of China-Africa relations. From a sociological perspective, the author also investigates the evolving conditions and motivations of China’s Africa watchers. She shows how they have come to legitimize and diffuse their expertise vis-à-vis the Chinese government and to what extent their increasing professionalization has contributed to the rise of an epistemic community of China’s Africa Watchers. Finally, a study of their intellectual productions reveals that China’s Africa Watchers have been developing in the 21st century new strategies of intellectual interventions, in order to support China’s foreign policy by connecting Africa-China developmental initiatives to a broader “global perspective”, thus offering a realistic alternative to North—South patterns which dominate the liberal governance model. By investigating how knowledge is produced, assimilated and repackaged by the community of Chinese experts on Africa, this study not only explores the content and the characteristics of China’s knowledge of Africa, but it also highlights narrative patterns and the importance of storytelling as a source of power in the construction — or the contestation — of the relations between actors in the international system

Sclérodermie systémique diffuse liée à une exposition professionnelle au trichloroéthylène et perchloréthylène

National audienceBackground Diffuse systemic sclerosis (DSS) is an autoimmune disease that is most often endogenous but which can also be induced by exogenous substances of occupational origin. Patients and methods We report a case of DSS involving prolonged intermittent occupational exposure to solvents (trichloroethylene [TCE] and perchloroethylene [PCE]). The disease was rapidly fatal with cardiac arrest secondary to myocardial fibrosis. Discussion In the event of exposure to TCE/PCE, we suggest more systematic prevention and diagnosis of DSS.Introduction La sclérodermie systémique diffuse (SSD) est une maladie auto-immune le plus souvent endogène, mais qui peut être induite par des substances exogènes d’origine professionnelle.
