Ag+/Li+ Ion-Exchange in LLZTO to Introduce Surface Layer Compressive Stress and Improve Electrochemical Performance
Ion-exchange (IX) is frequently used in the manufacturing of glasses to increase their fracture resistance. Using IX to introduce surface layer compressive stress in a solid electrolyte like lithium lanthanum zirconium tantalum oxide (LLZTO) has the potential to improve electrochemical performance by delaying lithium (Li) filament penetration through the solid electrolyte (SE). Computational work has proven the feasibility of ion-exchange between lithium ions and larger ions in LLZTO depending on the precursor used [1]. This experimental work explores several salt chemistries and heat treatments to evaluate the impact of IX on LLZTO. A multi-beam optical stress sensor (MOSS) was used to measure changes in curvature from IX induced stress. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electron-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used to characterize the composition of samples. Symmetric Li/Li cells were used to measure critical current density (CCD) and for long-term cycling tests to benchmark improvements in electrochemical performance. Results show controlled IX with LLZTO can introduce stress in the near surface layer, increase CCDs, and improve long-term cycling performance in a symmetric Li/Li cell.

American Roulette: The Effect of Reminders of Death on Support for George W. Bush in the 2004 Presidential Election
An experiment was conducted to assess the effect of a subtle reminder of death on voting intentions for the 2004 U.S. presidential election. On the basis of terror management theory and previous research, we hypothesized that a mortality salience induction would increase support for President George W. Bush and decrease support for Senator John Kerry. In late September 2004, following a mortality salience or control induction, registered voters were asked which candidate they intended to vote for. In accord with predictions, Senator John Kerry received substantially more votes than George Bush in the control condition, but Bush was favored over Kerry following a reminder of death, suggesting that President Bush's re-election may have been facilitated by non conscious concerns about mortality in the aftermath of September 11, 2001.This is an electronic version of the article published in Analyses of Social Issues and Public Policy, 5(1):177-187, 2005 Dec.The definitive version is available at www3.interscience.wiley.co

Identifying the Components in Eggshell Membranes Responsible for Reducing the Heat Resistance of Bacterial Pathogens
Enzymatically and biologically active protein fractions from hen eggshell membrane (ESM) and egg white (HEW) were isolated to evaluate their specific biological role in providing defense against bacterial pathogens. Numerous attempts to purify active protein/enzyme fractions from the ESM proved somewhat limited; however, isoelectric focusing and ion exchange chromatography provided a technical means whereby relatively pure samples were obtained. HEW β-N-acetylglucosaminidase (β-NAGase) was isolated using a two-step chromatographic procedure, during which relatively pure fractions of ovotransferrin were also obtained. These fractions were used assist in identifying ESM components that reduce the heat resistance of bacterial pathogens and to define the possible mechanism of action. Ovotransferrin, lysozyme and β-NAGase were identified as primary contributors to ESM antimicrobial activity. Cellular loss of Ca²⁻, Mg²⁻, Na⁻ K⁻ from S. Typhimurium cells, after treatment with ESM components was observed. Transmission electron microscopy indicated the integrity of the outer membrane was compromised when ovotransferrin, lysozyme and β-NAGase were applied to the cells. Thus, we hypothesized that ESM-bound ovotransferrin functions as an ion chelator and disrupts lipopolysaccharide stability, resulting in a compromised lipopolysaccharide and increased susceptibility to heat, enzymes and possibly other stressors.
Differences in enzymatic and biological activity of ESM as a function of layer breeds, age and ESM stabilization methods were determined. ESM biological activity remains fairly constant across different layer and breeds and throughout the laying cycle. Significant reductions in biological activity was not observed in refrigerated (4°C), frozen (-20°C) or freeze-dried ESM, however significant reductions in enzymatic and biological activities were observed for air and heat dried ESM. Refrigerated and frozen ESM also exhibited gradual loss of enzymatic activity during a 6 month storage study, where as air, heat and freeze-dried ESM showed no significant loss of enzyme activity after processing treatments
Stress Bearing Mechanism of Reduced Graphene Oxide in Silicon-Based Composite Anodes for Lithium Ion Batteries
Despite the significant research that has been carried out to improve cycling performance of lithium ion batteries (LIB) with silicon (Si) based composite electrodes, limited studies have been performed on these materials to evaluate the effects of internal microstructural changes and stress evolution on the electrochemical performance. Here, combined ex situ and in situ investigations on the accommodation of volume expansion in Si-based nanocomposite electrodes are reported. This work emphasizes the importance of conductive agents in light of the poor electronic conductivity of Si. A detailed comparison between commonly used carbon black (CB) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) shows that these materials have substantial effects on microstructural evolution and internal stress in Si based composite electrodes that are employed in lithium ion cells. This study provides the first monitoring of stress evolution in Si-rGO based composite electrode during electrochemical cycling using in situ wafer curvature measurements. The prepared Si-rGO based electrode exhibits almost 10 times lower stress generation and consequently higher cycling performance in electrochemical cells. The resulting 3D networked structure not only acts as an electronic conduit to the encapsulated active materials but also serves as a mini-electrochemical reaction chamber which hinders the formation of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and limits the pulverization of active material and the evolution of severe stress during cycling. Moreover, investigations of the microstructural changes and internal charge transfer resistance in the electrodes after cycling provide further evidence that rGO produces superior structures for energy storage

The US Rebalance and Southeast Asia: A Work in Progress
abstract: This article assesses Southeast Asian views of the US “rebalance,” examining reactions to US military deployments, military assistance to partners, and support for Southeast Asian diplomacy on South China Sea conflicts. Although not ostensibly designed to contain China, the rebalance provides Southeast Asia with hedging options against more assertive PRC actions in the South China Sea.Published as Simon, Sheldon W.
