The search for healthy foods and free of contaminants is increasing worldwide and for this, the food chain productive needs to consolidate the safety and quality of products sold. Thus, the stage mandatory for completion of the course in agronomy, accomplished in the company of bee products Breyer & Cia Ltda, aimed to follow the chain of production of honey, propolis and pollen. In summary, the activities involved the monitoring of the production lines of the company, laboratory analysis, traceability of bee products, organic certification and export, as well as field inspections to establishments and units of honey extraction. In addition, was conducted a case study on the company evaluating the input of propolis. The production stages that occur before the materials arrive the company and after its arrival are very important in order to obtain safe products with quality, and an overview of the production is of extreme importance to perfect it without neglecting the quality and safety. Additionally, was contacted the basis of a production is the motivation of the beekeeper to produce, that is directly related to the supply of the market, and investment in producing organic honey is in ascent. The mandatory stage approximates the academic to labor market, enabling experience and learning problems to solve, encourage students to be critical and responsible. The experience acquired during the stage in the company Breyer&Cia Ltda expanded knowledge about bee products, where I can see a labor camp promisin

Income Redistribution and the Political Economy of Social Health Insurance: Comparing Germany and Switzerland
In many countries, collectively financed health insurance systems or health services delivery systems (such as the NHS) exist. Typically, these institutions are financed via general taxes or specific contributions levied on earnings. As benefits are not dependent upon income, this implies a redistribution from high to low earners. An exception can be found in Switzerland, where equal per-capita contributions are used. From a public-choice perspective it is natural to ask whether the combination of health insurance and income redistribution leads to an expansion or a contraction of the size of a public health care system, a question that is particularly relevant in view of the projected rapid increase of health care costs in the next decades due to population ageing and medical progress. Building upon the work of Gouveia (1997) and an earlier paper by the author (Breyer 1995) I use a simple model of direct democracy to analyze under what circumstances income redistribution tends to expand the size of a public health insurance system. The predictions of the model are confronted with existing evidence from Germany and Switzerland and are used to develop hypotheses on the future development of the systems.
Discrete Multitone Modulation for Maximizing Transmission Rate in Step-Index Plastic Optical Fibres
The use of standard 1-mm core-diameter step-index plastic optical fiber (SI-POF) has so far been mainly limited to distances of up to 100 m and bit-rates in the order of 100 Mbit/s. By use of digital signal processing, transmission performance of such optical links can be improved. Among the different technical solutions proposed, a promising one is based on the use of discrete multitone (DMT) modulation, directly applied to intensity-modulated, direct detection (IM/DD) SI-POF links. This paper presents an overview of DMT over SI-POF and demonstrates how DMT can be used to improve transmission rate in such IM/DD systems. The achievable capacity of an SI-POF channel is first analyzed theoretically and then validated by experimental results. Additionally, first experimental demonstrations of a real-time DMT over SI-POF system are presented and discusse
Optimal scaling of Metropolis adjusted Langevin algorithms for nonlinear regression
We address the problem of simulating efficiently from the posterior distribution over the parameters of a particular class of nonlinear regression models using a Langevin–Metropolis sampler. It is shown that as the number of parameters increases, the proposal variance must scale in a precise way in order to converge to a diffusion. This generalizes previous results of Roberts and Rosenthal, showing the robustness of their analysis
Fairness of Public Pensions and Old-Age Poverty
In several OECD countries, public pay-as-you-go financed pension systems have undergone major reforms in which future retirement benefit promises have been scaled down. A consequence of these reforms is that especially in countries with a tight tax-benefit linkage, the retirement benefit claims of low-income workers might not even exceed the minimum income guarantee which the government provides the aged. Recently, some German politicians have criticized this likely development because it was unjust that persons who have paid contributions over a long working life end up with no higher benefits than people who have never worked or paid any contributions. However, the government defended the current retirement benefit formula with the argument that every Euro paid as contributions had exactly the same value in generating future retirement benefits. But this logic has been questioned recently, e.g. by Breyer and Hupfeld (2009), since the value of a contributed Euro depends on the life expectancy of the individual, which is positively correlated with annual income. In that earlier paper, we introduced the concept of "distributive neutrality", which takes income-group-specific differences in life expectancy into account. The present paper estimates the relationship between annual earnings and life expectancy of German retirees empirically and shows how the formula that links benefits to contributions would have to be modified to achieve distributive neutrality. We compare the new formula to the benefit formulas in other OECD countries and analyze a data set provided by the German Pension Insurance Office on a large cohort of pensioners to find out how the old-age poverty rate would be affected by the proposed change of the benefit formula. Finally, we discuss other possible effects of a change in the benefit formula, especially on the labour supply of different earnings groups.Social security, life expectancy, poverty, redistribution
Straight from the horse's mouth: Founders’ perspectives on achieving ‘traction’ in digital start-ups
Factors that contributed to the success of 12 digital start-ups are explored from the perspective of their founders. Key insights were drawn from narrations of their start-up journeys, along with interviews, public documents, and existing theories on entrepreneurship. The result is a rich tapestry of combined experiences and wisdoms on human and social capital, organisational and developmental processes and the priorities necessary to achieve early success – or traction – in digital start-ups. The founders emphasised having a vision and purpose based on solving customer problems; values that prioritise their customers’ needs over their own; focusing on a limited range of activities while pursuing iterative product development; and developing a customer base with an emphasis on quality and user experience. Each founder was part of a cohesive founding team comprising complementary business and technical competencies that pursued continual learning. And each founder demonstrated a digital start-up mindset – an entrepreneurial attitude combined with a deep understanding of the scalable, open, born-global, generative nature of digital technologies. These insights we derived from our analysis have been combined into a proposition for the TrAction framework, which contains the elements necessary to set a trajectory and the actions for achieving early success in digital ventures. The study provides practical learnings and applications for entrepreneurs and theoretical advances for academics in this nascent field of research through empirical insights across multiple aspects of digital start-up performance
