Perspektiven der Sprachlernmotivation: Zu Faktoren für bzw. gegen die Wahl von Deutsch am Beispiel Litauens
Because of its complexity, the concept of motivation in foreign language learning is difficult to grasp and to define; there is still no single definition of the term. However, motivation is thought to be extremely important for successful foreign language learning, consisting of many different motivation factors. This article deals with perspectives of motivation in foreign language learning. Based on the Lithuanian part of the research study Deutschlernmotivation (potenzieller) Deutschlernender in Estland, Lettland und Litauen, it focuses on the factors, which influence the choice of and against German, with Lithuania as an example. In the article, I present selected quantitative results of the study. The results show that the learners of German, the former learners and the non-learners tend to be satisfied with their respective (non-)choice of German. A clear majority of the respondents considers German to be important / useful for work, for travel, and in terms of knowledge. They also think that the knowledge of German is highly desirable; however, more than a third of the learners fear to speak German (or another language). German is looked upon as a difficult language and the majority of the respondents do not regard German lessons as easy. Last but not least, almost half of the former learners feel that German lessons are too labor-intensive
Sprachenwahl und Sprachkenntnisse zukünftiger Ökonomen in Finnland: Am Beispiel der Hanken School of Economics in Vaasa
This paper deals with language choice in terms of languages other than English and language skills of future economists at the Hanken School of Economics in Vaasa/Finland. German is the most frequently chosen language, followed by Spanish. With focus on German, it is investigated (i) how the future economists assess their own German skills, (ii) what objective language skills they have in German and (iii) what the relationship is between objective German skills and length of previous German language instruction. The paper shows that at the beginning of their studies at the Hanken School of Economics in Vaasa, the future economists attest themselves “no” to “very good knowledge” of German. The objective German language skills, measured by the C-test-based onSET Deutsch, typically increase from course level to course level. However, there is quite a large variation within each of the course levels German I, German II and German III. There is a tendency for objective German language skills to improve with the length of previous German language instruction. Nevertheless, it is possible that individual future economists achieve a better global language competence in German after two years of previous German language instruction than others after eight or nine years

Mehrsprachigkeit in der unternehmensinternen und -externen Kommunikation in Unternehmen in Pohjanmaa: Ergebnisse einer Befragung
This paper addresses multilingualism in companies’ internal and external communication. It presents the selected results of a survey, which was carried out within the project Corporate communications between Ostrobothnia and the German-speaking countries. The questionnaire was sent to 145 companies in the Finnish regions Ostrobothnia, South Ostrobothnia and Central-Ostrobothnia, which have business contacts with the German-speaking countries. The paper focuses on the language skills of respondents, on the use of multiple languages in the work context – within the company as well as externally – and on the role of languages in an organizational context. The study shows that the respondents not only have diverse language skills in four or more languages, but they usually interact in several working languages. Usually, several languages are used in the companies’ internal communication. In the companies’ external communication with German business partners, English and German play an important role. According to the respondents, these two languages – as well as Russian – are regarded as important in the work context, and expected to remain so in the future

Zur korpusbasierten Analyse von Pronomina in DaF-Lernertexten: Eine Pilotstudie
Although learner corpus research has become much more frequent during the last years, learner corpora for German as a foreign language are still not very common. Against this background, the scientific network Kobalt-DaF has compiled a small multi-layered learner corpus for German as a foreign language in order to conduct corpus-based analyses of learner texts. This article presents a pilot study on the use of pronouns in the Swedish and German Kobalt sub-corpora. The results of the Contrastive Interlanguage Analysis show that – compared to the German control group – the Swedish learners of German strongly overuse non-reflexive personal pronouns (e.g. wir ‘we’ and ich ‘I’) and substituting indefinite pronouns (e.g. man ‘one’), whereas they strongly underuse attributive demonstrative pronouns (e.g. dies ‘this’). The error analysis reveals that pronouns in the Swedish sub-corpus are much more often corrected than in the German control corpus. The exemplary error analysis of personal pronouns suggests that pronoun errors can often be attributed to problems with gender, case or orthography; however, “real” pronoun errors associated with reference and information structure do appear as well
