Nonlinearities and Price Puzzle in Brazil
What is called a price puzzle is a positive and persistent response of ination to a unit shock in the interest rate's innovation. Using a VAR to analyse monetary policy in Brazil, this paper comes to the conclusion that when nonlinearities in the data were considered, most of this e_ect vanishes. This is done _rstly by checking if the series are unit root processes or nonlinear trend stationary. After that a nonparametric co-trending analysis was applied. The test result favored a common nonlinear trend between ination and the interest rate, which seems to a_ect the system innovation analysis, inducing most of the price puzzle e_ect.Monetary Policy, Nonlinearities, Nonlinear Trend, Co-Trending, Common Treds, Price Puzzle
An LIA+EDQNM strategy to study shocked turbulent mixtures
Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of the interaction of shock waves with turbulent mixtures are only affordable for very low Reynolds numbers. We propose here to couple the Linear Interaction Analysis (LIA) with an Eddy-Damped Quasi-Normal Markovian (EDQNM) model to get inexpensive valuable information at large Reynolds number
Xará: Namesakes in Southern Mozambique and Bahia (Brazil)
In Maputo (Southern Mozambique) and Bahia (Brazil), the most commonly
used word to refer to namesakes is xara´ – a word of Amerindian origin. Although the
institutions in question diverge considerably in each of these contexts, the two usages
come together in that the sharing of a personal name establishes an alliance not only
between the two persons involved but also among their relations. In this way, it is
argued that the namesake institution is both supervening upon filiation and is a way
of closing the local universe of relatedness upon itself. By superimposing a set of crossing
ties, the namesake institution consolidates the entities at play and their relations.
Nevertheless, much like filiation, upon which it is dependent, the namesake relation is
one of co-responsibility and fusion between the partners, not of reciprocal responsibility.
The latter is the product of the triangulation that such relations of alliance produce
Family and Socialization Factors in Brazil: An Overview
The structure of the Brazilian family is related to five sub-cultures that, in turn, relate to the geographic regions of the country. This chapter presents a brief characterization of Brazilian culture and family, and describes changes in the structural relations and in the redefinition of models of Brazilian family organization. In order to illustrate the subtle interactions among social factors that influence the family in Brazil, we point out some values, beliefs, and practices employed by middle- and working-class parents. This paper also describes some of the characteristics of parent-child relationships within these families, providing an overview of children’s work, school, and home environments as they relate to socialization in poor families. We conclude the chapter by emphasizing that family has a privileged place in the creation, protection, support, and maintenance of relationships in Brazilian society
Expectations continue to improve in Latin America generally as well as in Brazil
Country by country, Lia Valls Pereira analyzes how expectations continue to improve in Latin America generally, despite a few backsliders, as well as in Brazil
Where does Brazil stand on trade facilitation?
Lia Valls Pereira explains what tradefacilitation means, why the recentWTO agreement in Bali may mark thepossibility that a new phase of negotiationshas opened in the multilateraltrade system, why trade facilitationmeasures should be on Brazil’s policyagenda to reduce transaction costs, and what that might imply for thecountry’s government and businesses
Brazil and Africa: productive technical cooperation
In 2009 the government detailed its goal for Africa — to increase Africa’s share in Brazil’s total exports by 5%. The 20 strategies to do so relate to finance and investment promotion, promotion of foreign trade, and cooperation and knowledge transfer. Lia Valls Pereira reports on a June seminar sponsored by the Brazilian Center for International Relations that discussed how the plan is playing out, with special attention to the work of the Brazilian Cooperation Agency and other government units, the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, and the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation
Trade Policy and Poverty Reduction in Brazil
Using a multi-region CGE model, we evaluate the regional, multilateral and unilateral trade policy options of MERCOSUR from the perspective of the welfare of all potential partners. In Brazil, we focus on poverty impacts. We find that the poorest households in Brazil experience percentage gains of between 1.5 to 5.5 percent of their consumption, which is about three to four times the average for Brazil. Protection in Brazil favors capital intensive manufacturing relative to unskilled labor intensive agriculture and manufacturing. So trade liberalization raises the return to unskilled labor relative to capital, thereby helping the poor.

This study aims to determine whether there is an influence of direct foreign investment, labor, and technology on economic growth (Case Study of Six Largest GDP Countries in America, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia).the research methode used is panel data regression analysis using time series data from 2010 – 2016 and cross section data of seven countries with ex post facto approach and using random effect obtained from worldbank. Data analysis technique used in this research is panel data regression analysis. Using the panel data regression analysis model, output shows foreigent direct investment has a negatif and insignificant effect on economic growth (Case Study of Six Largest GDP Countries in America, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia). Labor has a positif and significant effect on economic growth(Case Study of Six Largest GDP Countries in America, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia).Technology has a positif and significant on economic growth (Case Study of Six Largest GDP Countries in America, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia).

Antimalarials and the fight against malaria in Brazil

South American Indians in the seventeenth century already used an extract of the bark of chinchona tree, commonly named “Jesuits’ powder.” Its active compound was isolated in 1820 and its use spread all over the world being used as a prophylactic drug during the construction of the Madeira–Mamoré railroad in the beginning of the twentieth century. During the 1920s to the 1940s, new antimalarial drugs were synthesized to increase the arsenal against this parasite. However, the parasite has presented systematic resistence to conventional antimalarial drugs, driving researchers to find new strategies to treat the disease. In the present review we discuss how Brazil treats Plasmodium-infected patients. Keywords: Plasmodium falciparum, malaria, antimalarials, calciu
