Incidence of vulvovaginal candidiasis in women of the Imbabura province

    No full text
Vaginal candidiasis is a relevant topic nowadays and has also become one of the most prevalent diseases in women. Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is an infection caused by a fungus of the genus Candida, which usually forms part of our commensal gut microbiota. It becomes a health problem when the fungus colonizes the vaginal mucosa in an immunocompromised, pregnant person or follows antibiotic therapy. The fungi can proliferate, surpassing protective microorganisms and causing colonization in the host. Antimycotics are prescribed antimicrobial drugs that stop the growth of fungi or kill them. However, the fungus can acquire resistance to the treatments and pose a severe health risk for many women. The purpose of this project is to determine the prevalence of VVC in a population of women, identify the Candida species causing them, and evaluate the sensitivity of the fungi to commonly prescribed antifungals. This study was carried out since November 2019 to February 2021 in the Imbabura province. In the present investigation, one hundred and thirty-four samples of vaginal cervical exudates from women with symptoms of VVC were obtained in primary care health centers and were analyzed in the laboratories of Yachay Tech University. We conducted screens for fungal pathogens in order to isolate, identify Candida species, and determine the fungus susceptibility to antifungals clinically most used. Among all samples, 31,34% were culture positive. Out of the 30 positive samples, 96.7% were C. albicans, followed by C. parapsilosis (3.3%) while C. glabrata and C. tropicalis were not found. Moreover, C. albicans were identified in women between the ages of 18 and 29. Most isolates were sensitive to clotrimazole and voriconazole, and few were resistant to fluconazole. Our results suggest the identification of Candida species and their antifungal sensitivity testing should be routinely performed to achieve proper treatment and appropriate clinical results.

Margin-Alt: Peripherial ethos and the intentional margis in Javier García Rodriguez

    No full text
Javier García Rodríguez is an author whose work has an autobiographical basis. Despite this, fictional self-consciousness is a key element. All his books form a single work, because they share the same implicit author, which uses autobiographical material but without following a chronological order. The chronotope of this work is fractured by this disorganized structure and the confluence of two fundamental axes: the neighborhood of Pajarillos Altos in the Valladolid of his childhood and the interior of the United States in his youth. The cultural references that shape the chronotope are part of the stylistic system of the author, who, while inscribing himself in a generational current of return to the neighborhood of his origins, transgresses the genres, intentions and forms of his contemporaries

    No full text
The article focuses on the concept of autofiction and its utility in the interpretation of Javier García Rodríguez´s latest work: Barra americana. His narrative strategy involves toying with the intention of exposing and hiding author´s inner self as well as with taking on the status of a textual construct and re-creating one’s „real” I. The deliberations about Barra americana (some sort of combination of a novel, a collection of short stories and a patchwork of citations) gain clarity and distinctness thanks to the theoretical approach by Ryszard Nycz. His concept of “sylleptical I” seems to be very useful when analysing this “fictional chronicle” by a Spaniard placed in American reality marked by the literary sensibility of David Foster Wallace and Lorrie Moore (and plenty other writers mentioned by García Rodríguez in his polymorphous novel)

Perspectives of the River Plate around the time of Rosas : an analysis based upon the personal correspondence, private memoirs and published accounts of British settlers, as well as works by creole authors

This thesis draws inspiration from the emergence of cultural studies as an academic pursuit, in addition to the current renewal of interest in the relationship between literary works and their socio-cultural milieux, to bring together an assortment of textual traces pertaining to the River Plate around the era of Juan Manuel de Rosas, governor of Buenos Aires and de facto dictator of Argentina for most of the period 1829-1852. The main texts analysed range from private documents relating to two Scottish settler families, through accounts published by British citizens with first-hand knowledge of the region (Un inglés, Cinco años en Buenos Aires and Beaumont, Travels in Buenos Ayres and the Adjacent Provinces), to three influential pieces of early Argentinian literature (Echeverria's El matadero, Mármol's Amalia and Sarmiento's Facundo). One justification of this apparently eclectic approach lies in the prominence accorded to the incomer in the thought of liberal Platine intellectuals, a concern evinced in their literary production. The methodology involves examining the representation of certain fundamental topics across this range of written artefacts, observing frequent points of thematic convergence amongst the various texts. In this fashion, I construct an image of the River Plate region around the Rosas period, whilst also appraising the degree to which early British settlers matched the idealized notion of the immigrant present in liberal creole writings. The study is divided into four main chapters, supplemented by an introduction, conclusion and appendix. The first chapter summarizes the historical context of the young Platine republics; the second deals with the themes of society, community and family, the third focuses upon religion; the fourth considers perspectives of politics, dictatorship and civil war. The appendix consists of an unpublished settler autobiography, a remarkable account of the tribulations faced on a daily basis in the developing Argentina

The present work is based on a research about the perspective from which the playwright Antonio Buero Vallejo tackle the character of the Spanish painter Francisco de Goya. The starting point is the classical premise ut pictura poiesis brought up by Horatio in the Classical period; therefore, the following pages analyze the way in which the writer has been able to make use of the large possibilities of a text full of pictorical mentions. The theatrical piece is articulated around the poetic motif of ecfrasis. Moreover, Buero Vallejo offers the reader Goya´s career while painting the Pinturas negras through the dialogues and stage indications; as a consequence, the author gets to reflect the stifling atmosphere the paintings try to contain. It is, thus, an interartisctic reflection about two essential characters of their time, belonging to different but complementary fields, the artistic and literary ones
