Full text linkI detta Meddelande nr 55 från Veterinärhistoriska museet har författaren - professor emeritus Lars-Erik Appelgren - gjort ett urval av den korrespondens som Peter Hernquist hade med sina mentorer Carl von Linné och Abraham Bäck under sin vistelse i Frankrike, varvid ”Lärda nyheter” varit en ledstjärna för urvalet. Speciellt har breven till Bäck försetts med författarens personliga kommentarer men även kompletterats med faktaupplysningar från andra källor än breven om berörda nyheter. För att underlätta läsningen har dessa kommentarer omgetts med enkelkonturerad och utvikningarna med dubbelkonturerad ram. Lars-Erik Appelgren har inte bara genom sitt veterinärhistoriska författarskap utan också genom att ställa sina fackliga kunskaper och sin eminenta estetiska läggning till förfogande gjort Veterinärhistoriska museet ovärderliga tjänster. Det är med stor glädje jag noterar att region Uppsala nyligen visat sin uppskattning genom att tilldela Lars-Erik sitt Medicinhistoriska stipendium med motiveringen att de vill ”lyfta fram ett viktigt men ofta förbisett område inom medicinhistorien: veterinärmedicinen”. Interpreting Wage Bargaining Norms
Full text linkFrom the mid-1990s onwards, Swedish wage bargaining has been characterised by informal co-ordination of the wage claims of big unions and bargaining cartels. In particular, it has been understood that the manufacturing sector should lead by first agreeing on a pay increase, whereafter the service sector and public sector unions choose a similar increase. We analyse his setup with two possible theoretical interpretations: (i) the manufacturing sector as a tackelberg leader and (ii) a normative role for the manufacturing sector’s pay increase, upported either by unmodelled social pressure or a modeled loss aversion (envy) of the heltered sector unions. The conclusion of the analysis is that the normative or leading role of one sector – in the Swedish case the manufacturing sector – can potentially bring big benefits for employment and output. Generalising an idea suggested by Lars Calmfors and Anna Larsson, our analysis also generates a rudimentary theory of why the wage increase norm sometimes binds and sometimes not. A comparison of the model predictions and the observed outcomes of the last five wage bargaining rounds in Sweden suggests that the model is generally consistent with the empirical observations: wage moderation and norm observance are stronger when the manufacturing industry’s initial relative wage is low.wage bargaining; bargaining co-ordination

Skrifter utgivna av Svenska Vitterhetssamfundet. Svenska författare. Ny serie, xxxii + 296 p. Stockholm. ISBN 978-91-7230-213-6Johan Risell (1697–1724) was a highly acclaimed Swedish poet during the early 18th century. However, he has gradually been forgotten, possibly because of his early death and the changing times and literary ideals, but mainly because only seven poems have been known to his name. During the 20th century, he did not receive attention.Due to a recent manuscript find in Karlstad in Värmland, 61 poems by Risell are now known. This volume presents a critical edition of his poems. Notwithstanding his death at the age of only 27, Risell is shown to have been a diligent and varied author, writing orations and occasional verse to further his career, but also excelling in satires and songs to entertain his friends. It is clear that he performed his orations and songs, and he appears as a Swedish example of an early modern singer-songwriter. The student setting of Uppsala was important. In many of his poems and songs he celebrates a joyful bohemian way of life, in others, he appears as a melancholic lover. His vivid imagination, emotional appeal and oral qualities are to be noted. The themes of love and war are prominent. His more than two dozen song-texts are particularly notable, as it is shown that many of these were widely spread during the 18th century, though without attribution. They appear in handwritten songbooks and a few were printed in chapbooks.Johan Risell was a vicar’s son from Värmland and Dalsland, who matriculated at Uppsala University 1717, but never received a degree. After working as a tutor for richer families, he finally was appointed »stadssekreterare« (a local administrative position calling for some training in law) in Köping. He died in Uppsala before he could take up office.</p
