Structural and synthetic insights into the chemistry of lithium tetraorganozincates
Main group bimetallic complexes have emerged as powerful reagents in organometallic synthesis, exhibiting unique reactivity profiles that cannot be replicated by their homo-metallic components. This chapter focusses on a particular family of bimetallic reagents, namely higher order lithium zincates. Exhibiting the empirical formulation R4ZnLi2 (R = alkyl, aryl, alkynyl, etc.), these compounds have found widespread applications in cornerstone organic reactions such as deprotonative metalation, metal halogen exchange or C[sbnd]C bond forming processes. By switching on bimetallic cooperativity these reagents exhibit excellent functional group tolerance and regioselectivities while being kinetically activated in comparison with parent organozinc reagents R2Zn. Showcasing key selected examples here we provide an overview on the synthesis, structure, solution constitution and stability of these mixed lithium/zinc complexes and discuss their most representative applications in modern organic synthesis. A main aim of this chapter is to shed light on the close interplay between structure and reactivity in this family of mixed lithium/zinc reagents and how bimetallic cooperation can be maximized to develop more effective and regioselective synthetic protocols

«... Call him our national prophet...». Taras Shevchenko's personality in Borys Hrinchenko's publicistic heritage in 1892–1893
In the article author presented Borys Hrinchenko's opinion concerning Taras Shevchenko's place in Ukrainian national revival which he made public in 1892–1893 during debates with Mykhailo Drahomanov devoted to national affairs on pages of Galician-Volynian publications. B. Hhnchenko opposed M. Drahomanov's efforts to break Shevchenko's legends and to conquer newborn cult of Great Kobzar. Thus he kept on tradition of creation of Shevchenko's nation-wide fame as national prophet and genius. Hrinchenko was convinced that such interpretation of historical mission of Shevchenko could be favorable for consolidation of modern Ukrainian nation

Borys Ten in the Context of the Ukrainian-Georgian Literary Relations of the 20th Century: on the Ukrainian “Tamariani” by Chakhrukhadze
У пропонованій статті осмислюється шлях українського перекладача до «Тамаріані»: причини вибору творів для перекладу; мотивація; роль українських неокласиків М. Зерова, М. Рильського, М. Бажана і його уроків перекладу «Витязя в тигровій шкурі» Ш. Руставелі;
Based on the study of the Central State Archive-Museum of Literature and Art of Ukraine
materials, the work traces the way of Ukrainian translator Borys Ten (M. Khomychevskyi)
to Georgian literature. In particular, the paper focuses on the work of Chakhrukhadze as a
forerunner of the great Rustaveli, the poem’s role in the literature of the Georgian Middle
Ages, the motives for making translation, and reception of the work in Ukraine.
The library of the Archive-Museum of Literature and Art of Ukraine received a
thirty-page manuscript written in pencil with no title page and no name. Having read it,
I immediately recognized Chakhrukhadze’s voice, which made me return to the anthology
with fragments of Chakhrukhadze’s poem translated by Borys Ten. The contemporary
circle of translators used to be rather stable, and they usualy knew each other well.
However, Borys Ten did not typically work with Georgian literature, and the numerous
pseudonyms that M. Khomychevskyi used after his exile were known mainly to specialists.
Despite the peculiarity of a ten-syllable verse, close to the folk samples as much as
possible, the translation sounded naturally, without the slightest artificiality. The intrigue
was growing since most archival materials concerned the translation of ancient literature
and the issues of translation theory and practice, in particular the treatment of hexameter.
Even if we consider that due to circumstances, the author had to use pseudonyms at specific periods of his literary activity, Georgian works were not noticed in his translation
practice. There emerges a question, the answer to which would explain the path of Borys
Ten to Chakhrukhadze and certain pages of his creative life.
To reveal the way of the Ukrainian translator to “Tamariani” one must consider his
reasons for choosing the field of translation for a career; the role of Ukrainian neo-classics
M. Zerov and M. Rylskyi, as well as M. Bazhan and lessons of his translation of “The Knight
in the Panther’s Skin” by Rustaveli; the search of the translator’s own way amidst a variety
of stylistic and compositional solutions; the development of personal approach to the rendering
of original work; the ‘creative dominant’ of “Tamariani” by Chakhrukhadze
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods

Safety regulation: The lessons of workplace safety rule management for managing the regulatory burden
There is a strong political consensus in a number of countries that occupational safety and health regulation is stifling industrial innovation and development and is feeding a culture of damaging risk aversion and petty bureaucracy. In a number of countries this has led to proposals to repeal regulations and reduce the regulatory burden. The authors were commissioned to prepare a discussion paper on this issue by the Mercatus Center of George Mason University in Arlington, Virginia, aimed particularly at an American audience. The paper is based on previous work of the first two authors, developing a framework of safety rule management at the workplace level (Hale & Borys 2012a and b). Based on a literature study, this paper analyses the similarities and differences between rules at the workplace level and the development, use and enforcement of regulations at the national level to influence and control organisational behaviour. It traces the forces encouraging the growth of regulatory detail and hence the bureaucratic burden of compliance and the options open to reduce that burden without loosening control so much that the level of safety declines. The analysis uses the hierarchy of rules from goals, through process (risk management) rules to detailed action rules as framework for predicting the level of ownership and responsibility felt by the regulated.Values and TechnologyTechnology, Policy and Managemen
Simulation of thermal plant optimization and hydraulic aspects of thermal distribution loops for large campuses
Following an introduction, the author describes Texas A&M University and its utilities system. After that, the author presents how to construct simulation models for chilled water and heating hot water distribution systems. The simulation model was used in a $2.3 million Ross Street chilled water pipe replacement project at Texas A&M University. A second project conducted at the University of Texas at San Antonio was used as an example to demonstrate how to identify and design an optimal distribution system by using a simulation model. The author found that the minor losses of these closed loop thermal distribution systems are significantly higher than potable water distribution systems. In the second part of the report, the author presents the latest development of software called the Plant Optimization Program, which can simulate cogeneration plant operation, estimate its operation cost and provide optimized operation suggestions. The author also developed detailed simulation models for a gas turbine and heat recovery steam generator and identified significant potential savings. Finally, the author also used a steam turbine as an example to present a multi-regression method on constructing simulation models by using basic statistics and optimization algorithms. This report presents a survey of the author??s working experience at the Energy Systems Laboratory (ESL) at Texas A&M University during the period of January 2002 through March 2004. The purpose of the above work was to allow the author to become familiar with the practice of engineering. The result is that the author knows how to complete a project from start to finish and understands how both technical and nontechnical aspects of a project need to be considered in order to ensure a quality deliverable and bring a project to successful completion. This report concludes that the objectives of the internship were successfully accomplished and that the requirements for the degree of Degree of Engineering have been satisfied
