No full textOver the last two decades, right-wing populist parties in Western Europe have gained sizable vote shares and power, much to the fascination and consternation of political observers. Meshing traditionalism and communitarian ideals, right-wing populist parties have come to represent a polar normative ideal to the New Left in Western Europe. In his dynamic study Cleavage Politics and the Populist Right, Simon Bornschier applies a cultural as well as political dimension to analyze the parties of both the right and left in six countries. He develops a theory that integrates the role of political conflict around both established cleavages and party strategies regarding new divisions to explain the varying fortunes of the populist right.
Combining innovative data from election campaigns and opinion surveys, Cleavage Politics and the Populist Right explains the emergence of the Front National in France and the transformation of the Swiss People's Party to right-wing populism. Where the populist right has made a breakthrough, a new cultural cleavage has formed. On the other hand, when established parties succeed in averting the entry of a right-wing populist competitor, the new cultural conflict presents itself in tempered form, as demonstrated in the case of Germany

Full text linkDie SVP hat sich in den letzten 15 Jahren stark gewandelt. Früher nur in ländlichen und protestantischen Regionen angesiedelt, ist sie unter dem Einfluss von Christoph Blocher zur stärksten Partei auf nationaler Ebene geworden. Dieses Buch bietet eine detaillierte Analyse der Gründe dieses Aufstiegs.Nach den eidgenössischen Wahlen 2003 kam es zum ersten Mal seit über 40 Jahren zu einer Veränderung in der Zusammensetzung des Bundesrates, der Schweizer Regierung. Die «Zauberformel», welche seit den Wahlen von 1959 Gültigkeit gehabt hatte, wurde modifiziert. Mit Christoph Blocher, dem charismatischen Führer der Zürcher SVP, wurde ein zweites Mitglied der SVP auf Kosten der CVP in den Bundesrat gewählt. Gleichzeitig wählte die Vereinigte Bundesversammlung mit Hans-Rudolf Merz auch einen neuen, konservativen Vertreter des Freisinns. Der Rechtsrutsch in der Regierung war das Resultat des stürmischen Aufstiegs, den die SVP seit Beginn der 1990er Jahre in Schweizer Wahlen auf allen Ebenen erlebt hatte. In diesem Band wird der Aufstieg der SVP unter die demoskopische Lupe genommen. Anhand der Selects-Umfragen zu den Schweizer Wahlen von 1995 und 2003 sowie von Analysen der Wahlkämpfe und der kantonalen Kontexte wird den Gründen des Erfolgs der SVP nachgegangen. Dazu wurden acht Kantone ausgewählt (Zürich, Bern, Aargau, Schaffhausen, Luzern, Tessin, Waadt und Genf), welche die unterschiedlichen Ausgangsbedingungen für den Aufstieg der SVP repräsentieren

West European politics in the age of globalization
No full textOver the past three decades the effects of globalization and denationalization have created a division between ‘winners’ and ‘losers’ in Western Europe. This study examines the transformation of party political systems in six countries (Austria, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the UK) using opinion surveys, as well as newly collected data on election campaigns. The authors argue that, as a result of structural transformations and the strategic repositioning of political parties, Europe has observed the emergence of a tripolar configuration of political power, comprising the left, the moderate right, and the new populist right. They suggest that, through an emphasis on cultural issues such as mass immigration and resistance to European integration, the traditional focus of political debate - the economy - has been downplayed or reinterpreted in terms of this new political cleavage. This new analysis of Western European politics will interest all students of European politics and political sociology
