Steven Garber speaks on the importance and value of truth.
Steven Garber is the principal of The Washington Institute for Faith, Vocation & Culture, which is focused on reframing the way people understand life, especially the meaning of vocation and the common good. A consultant to foundations, corporations and educational institutions, he is a teacher of many people in many places. The author of The Fabric of Faithfulness: Weaving Together Belief and Behavior, and Visions of Vocation: Common Grace for the Common Good, he is also a contributor to the books, Faith Goes to Work: Reflections from the Marketplace, and Get Up Off Your Knees: Preaching the U2 Catalogue. On Spheres with k Points Inside
We generalize a classical result by Boris Delaunay that introduced Delaunay triangulations. In particular, we prove that for a locally finite and coarsely dense generic point set A in ℝ^d, every generic point of ℝ^d belongs to exactly binom(d+k,d) simplices whose vertices belong to A and whose circumspheres enclose exactly k points of A. We extend this result to the cases in which the points are weighted, and when A contains only finitely many points in ℝ^d or in ^d. Furthermore, we use the result to give a new geometric proof for the fact that volumes of hypersimplices are Eulerian numbers
A high-throughput chromatin immunoprecipitation approach reveals principles of dynamic gene regulation in mammals
Full author list omitted for brevity. For the full list of authors, see article.Understanding the principles governing mammalian gene regulation has been hampered by the difficulty in measuring in vivo binding dynamics of large numbers of transcription factors (TF) to DNA. Here, we develop a high-throughput Chromatin ImmunoPrecipitation (HT-ChIP) method to systematically map protein-DNA interactions. HT-ChIP was applied to define the dynamics of DNA binding by 25 TFs and 4 chromatin marks at 4 time-points following pathogen stimulus of dendritic cells. Analyzing over 180,000 TF-DNA interactions we find that TFs vary substantially in their temporal binding landscapes. This data suggests a model for transcription regulation whereby TF networks are hierarchically organized into cell differentiation factors, factors that bind targets prior to stimulus to prime them for induction, and factors that regulate specific gene programs. Overlaying HT-ChIP data on gene-expression dynamics shows that many TF-DNA interactions are established prior to the stimuli, predominantly at immediate-early genes, and identified specific TF ensembles that coordinately regulate gene-induction

Letter from the women representatives of Jersey Homesteads' co-operative clothing factory to Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt
Jersey Homesteads (later Roosevelt) was established in the 1930s as an agro-industrial cooperative community. It was established specifically for urban, Jewish garment workers, many of whom had emigrated from Europe. Women representatives of Jersey Homestead's co-operative garment industry wrote a letter to Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt as the Jersey Homestead community was on the brink of failure. They explained that although the community was successful in attracting private industry to locate in the Jersey Homesteads factory, the Farm Security Administration's leasing conditions made the company unwilling to sign. The women ask her to intercede on their behalf to the Farm Security Administration, so that they might be able to earn a living
Financial globalization and the Russian crisis of 1998
Russia had more-or-less completed the privatization of its manufacturing and natural resource sectors by the end of 1997. And in February 1998, the annual inflation rate at last dipped into the single digits. Privatization should have helped with stronger micro-foundations for growth. The conquest of inflation should have cemented macroeconomic credibility, lowered real interest rates, and spurred investment. Instead, Russia suffered a massivepublic debt-exchange rate-banking crisis just six months later, in August 1998. In showing how this turn of events unfolded, the authors focus on the interaction among Russia's deteriorating fiscal fundamentals, its weak micro-foundations of growth and financial globalization. They argue that the expectation of a large official bailout in the final 10 weeks before the meltdown played an important role, with Russia's external debt increasing by $16 billion or 8 percent of post-crisis gross domestic product during this time. The lessons and insights extracted from the 1998 Russian crisis are of general applicability, oil and geopolitics notwithstanding. These include a discussion of when financial globalization might actually hurt and a cutoff in market access might actually help; circumstances in which an official bailout could backfire; and why financial engineering tends to fail when fiscal solvency problems are present.Debt Markets,Emerging Markets,Banks&Banking Reform,Access to Finance,Currencies and Exchange Rates
Viral Meningitis and Encephalitis Update
Purpose of Review: This review describes advances in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of non-bacterial meningitis and encephalitis, with a focus on emerging viral causes of central nervous system (CNS) infection. Recent Findings: The Infectious Diseases Society of America recently published new guidelines for the management of encephalitis. Multiple articles have been published detailing emerging etiologies in human CNS infections, including analyses of neurological complications in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, several novel viral detection methods have been described, which may improve the detection of the specific etiologies of CNS infections (Hongyan et al. Front Neurol 14, [1]). Summary: Meningitis and encephalitis remain important causes of morbidity and mortality. They are as a whole uncommon, yet timely diagnosis, treatment, and disposition are still critical to improve patient outcomes. In clinical practice the exact cause of encephalitis is frequently unidentified, making supportive care often the only available treatment. Emergency physicians, neurologists, infectious disease doctors, and intensive care unit specialists will benefit from reviewing this discussion on emerging pathogens, as well as from reviewing advances in virology, immunology, and the imaging of inflammatory CNS conditions
Perianal Infections Update
Purpose of Review We describe the evaluation, treatment, and disposition of patients presenting with perianal and rectal complaints, specifically focusing on identifying and treating various infectious diseases affecting this area. Risk factors and preventative strategies are also discussed where known. Recent Findings Several professional medical associations, namely the World Society of Emergency Surgery and the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, recently promulgated new guidelines concerning the diagnosis and management of common infectious rectal disorders [1]. The American College of Radiology also published its criteria for choosing appropriate imaging modalities for anorectal disease [2]. Additionally, new meta-analyses have been published trying to shed light on important controversies regarding the optimal management of perirectal abscess, Fournier’s gangrene, and sepsis. During the recent Mpox outbreak, several case reports of patients with perianal complications have been published. This review discusses appropriate diagnosis and management of perianal infections. Summary We will make the recent evidence that has emerged on diagnosis, imaging, treatment, and disposition of perianal infections available to practitioners, aiming to improve patients’ outcomes. Many sexually transmitted diseases, as well as Mpox, can present with rectal complaints, requiring familiarity on the practitioner’s part for optimal management
