A Typology for Book Arts Programs
There is great variety within and across American book arts programs, however, there have been very few attempts to systematically analyze programs. As the field of book arts education matures, a typology for classifying programs can contribute to the field’s critical dialogue and may aid teachers, administrators, and students in developing and sustaining book arts programs. A typology is a classification strategy typically used in the social sciences that is problem-oriented. Typologies are used to analyze variables and create useful categories for phenomena that are evolving and changing. This typology was developed to stimulate systematic thinking about the teaching of the book arts and may contribute to promoting the continued evolution of book art programs in a wide variety of institutional contexts
The Google Book search settlement: A law and economics analysis
Beginning in December 2004 Google has pursued a new project to create a book search engine (Google Book Search). The project has released a storm of controversy around the globe. While the supporters of Google Book Search conceive the project as a first reasonable step towards unlimited access to knowledge in the information age, its opponents fear profound negative effects due to an erosion of copyright law. Our law and economics analysis of the Book Search Project suggests that – from a copyright perspective – the proposed settlement may be beneficial to right holders, consumers, and Google. For instance, it may provide a solution to the still unsolved dilemma of orphan works. From a competition policy perspective, we stress the important aspect that Google’s pricing algorithm for orphan and unclaimed works effectively replicates a competitive Nash-Bertrand market outcome under post-settlement, third-party oversight.Book Rights Registry; Competition Policy; Copyright; Fair Use; Google Book Search; Library Program; Orphan Works

The Book as Computer: A Numerical and Topological Analysis of Only Revolutions
oai:ojs.pkp.sfu.ca:article/3The novel Only Revolutions: The Democracy of Two Set Out & Chronologically Arranged (2006), by Mark Z. Danielewski, establishes a relationship between its bibliographic coding (i.e., its graphical and material form as a book made of letters, pages and openings with a specific typographic design), its linguistic coding (i.e., its phonetic, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic form), and its narrative coding (i.e., its form as story). Only Revolutions uses the Möbius strip and the circle, in their multiple material and symbolic manifestations – including letter and number shapes – as the organizing principle of this triple universe of signs. Circularity and mirror symmetry function simultaneously as the structure of the book, the structure of language, and the structure of narrative. This article describes the book’s numerical and topological form as a mechanism for creating feedback loops between those structures
