    © 1993 Dr. Elivio BonolloIn this thesis the design of courses in Industrial design has been investigated with particular reference to the role of undergraduate design projects and with due regard to the attitudes, knowledge and skills expected of industrial designers. This investigation has been set in the context of a final-year, degree programme in industrial design which had a substantial project content to prepare the new graduates for employment as professional designers. From a critical review of the relevant literature, the characteristics of the industrial design discipline have been identified and a novel theoretical framework established for investigating the design of tertiary courses in industrial design, having in mind related engineering design methodology. An investigation into the role of industry-based, design projects in the educational process of transforming student designers into competent professionals has been carried out, and criteria and guidelines for the successful conduct and evaluation of such projects have been set up

    A systems design approach for investigating Australian TAFE design education

    This paper explains how a systems design approach has been used to develop a model of a design education system within the Australian Vocational Education and Training context, and with respect to the views and aspirations of design teachers. It uses empirical data to identify important model parameters (and their related constituent variables) that can be employed to describe the characteristics of the TAFE design education system. This model provides a useful tool for obtaining relevant, empirical system performance data which, in turn, can be applied to refine the model. Moreover, it may be adapted in future research to obtain the views of other important stakeholders within the context of design and perhaps other related vocational education fields. The paper begins with a literature survey and a brief outline of the research and data analysis methods employed. This is followed by system modelling, a summary and conclusions

    A Design Study of Sustainable Infectious Waste Management Systems for Small Healthcare Providers in North-Eastern Thailand

    This paper outlines the methodology, based on a systems design approach, used to investigate and develop an improved model of an infectious waste management system for small healthcare providers in North-Eastern Thailand, mindful of sustainability and health care requirements. As will be explained, this research is based on quantitative and qualitative mixed-methods of enquiry and data collection including surveying the views of groups of professionals from ten representative small healthcare providers. These groups of participants (representing the main stakeholders) included administrative staff and medical doctors, nurses and practitioners, and unskilled operational staff. Based on empirical interview survey data obtained from these groups, a parametric model of an infectious waste management system (IWMS) has been developed in order to identify the relevant parameters and constituent variables underpinning the effectiveness of the system. This model of an IWMS has seven important functional parameters, namely: (1) planning and design of the system, (2) administration and policy, (3) individual departmental procedures, (4) sustainable, infectious waste disposal methods, (5) periodic and monitoring and control, (6) commonly used products and equipment, and (7) prevailing cultural and social norms. It is supported by detailed empirical data of which a relevant sample will be presented and discussed. It will be shown that the systems design approach, along with related empirical investigations (inclusive of stakeholder views) can lead to improvements in the design and operation of infectious waste management systems for small health care providers in NE Thailand

    Drawings and the development of creativity and form language in product design education

    This paper explores the role, typology and evolutionary aspects of drawings and related modelling tools in the design process, as a basis for the development of product form language and related semantics. Case studies, which utilise analogies based on biological and other forms to generate creative concepts, will be used to show how the design process, as used for designing an object, product, artefact or system, often starts with an informal visual language and finishes with a formal visual language so that the product use and esteem functions are properly described. This paper will trace and explain this development at a micro level so that this progression will be better understood from a didactic viewpoint and serve to remind educators and students about the nature and fundamental roles of drawing in the design process

    This paper sets out to clarify the relationship between the ‘research process’ and the ‘design process’ in the context of research in postgraduate Art & Design education. The relationship between these processes is not well understood, and this is further complicated by terms such as ‘research design’ and ‘design thinking’ when applied to planning research activities, including selecting the qualitative and quantitative methods employed. In addition, ‘practice-based research’ is still controversial in terms of traditional academic research, and its acceptance varies in different countries and art and design schools. However, as will be explained, the ‘research process’ and the ‘design process’ valuable analogous functions which enhance the research outcomes when applied sensibly. This paper will use process modelling tools, diagrams and pragmatic experience from supervising PhD projects to show how the research and design processes are interrelated leading to better informed research experiences for students and supervisors

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
